To many ot us it is just a name handed down through the years. Few know the real meaning and Where the Word originated. About thirty-six years ago, Mrs Lana Conger, a former Chattey teacher, gave the name ot Fasti to our yearbook. The Latin Language Was the source she turned to in choosing the name. The word Fasti has its derivation from a Latin verb meaning to speak. A great Latin poet once Wrote a iong poem called Fasti, Which Was a calen- dar ot events. Therefore, our yearbook, the Fasti, is a record or a calendar ot the year's events. 4 t Front View of Library Front Viei' vf Nor M 1 th Hall Side View of North Hall Foreword Using an oceanic caricature, the '53 Fasti statt has chosen tor its theme that nautical land under the sea known as l'Davey lones' Locker. l-lere at Chattey, as we tlounder through a sea ot games, dances, as- semblies and a little homework now and then, we often teel like poor lish -in a school ot course. But the mighty ocean of time rolls on, and we are caught in its tide and carried along by its great waves to tomorrow's distant shores. lt is the sincere wish ot the statt that every student seas his school lite reflected in the pages ot this book. 5 W ...v....,,.-...W-.f-'-Q-1,-A-v ' ' W, Q,o5,Q,..Q.v,. Now on the eve of your graduation from high school each one of you must an- swer a Very serious and a very personal question. What next? What do l want lite to hold for me? Individuals are the result of the decisions they have made along the course oi their lives. Many of these decisions have been small ones, but in the aggregate they have fashioned personalities. Parents, friends, teachers, and counselors can advise, counsel, coax, and threaten, you can blame others tor your mistakes and tail- ures, but you as an individual must assume the responsibility tor the choices you make and course of action you must follow. What next? That depends on youl With sincere best wishes for lives oi wise choices, Ernest A. Payne, Principal Chaiiey Union High School Ernest A. Payne Alexander McLeish Burton Wiley One of the busiest and most interest- ing jobs at Chaffey is that of the guid- ance counselors. Not only do the coun- selors suggest courses which would be practical and beneficial to a student's particular needs, but they also give aptitude, l.Q., and vocational tests. Seniors find the guidance office par- ticularly helpful when planning careers or choosing a college. Thomas Piequet, sophomore counselorp Mrs. Ruth Johnson, freshman counselory Edmond Shinn, iunior counselor. Guidance Group The attendance office, located in South Hall, is remarkably efficient in recording the attendance of the 2800 students at Chaffey-Ontario. Besides re- adrnitting students and printing a list of absent students each day, the atten- dance office issues work permits, com- piles official state reports on atten- dance, and checks on the reasons for student absences. Bidonia Edwards' exotic modern type shuttle to UBachel captivated the audience's attention. Then the Advanced Boys Chorus sang Old Devil Moon, under the direction ol Miss loyce Holly. Tap dancing to l'Me and My Shadow, lanice Tenney and Karmen Ellsworth were followed by the acrobatic antics ot Ana May Warner, who performed among the coals ot There A modern dance by lrmgard Bohle, Barbara Smith, and Margie Nichols then preceded Linda Spaziani's sultry rendition ot Saint or Sinner. Close ing the second act, the Mixed Chorus, directed by Miss Buth Krouch, sang an impressive version ot leZebel. Left: Mary Freeman. Center: Wilma Daniel, Ruth Richards. Right: John Keith. Here, There, and Everywhere was the theme tor the l953 Extravaganzaithe biggest production oi the school year. Over-all director ot the show was Arleigh McConnell. Settings tor the three acts, which took place on earth, in hell, and in heaven, were designed and painted by the production art class under the direction of Carl Hossler. Act l was opened with an exciting rendition ot Love ls Sweeping the Country, sung by the Chorale. Eol- lowing the introductory skit, Lynne Lewis sang l Want to Be Loved by You. Other singers in Act l included Buth Bichards, in a comic interpretation ot l Wish l Was, and Dale Buckwalter, who expertly vocalized Lullaby ot Broadway. Bottom picture: Mitnee Duque, Lynne Lewis, Dolores Zdilor. ln accordance with the '53 Extravaganza theme, Act lll presented the Everywhere part-laid on the streets ot heaven. The Advanced Girls' Crlee Club opened Act lll in a good-natured mood with Get Happy. Following this number was Fanchon Carlsten as she stated I Told Every Little Star, in words and music. An all-male quartet, consisting ot lohn Ericson, Haines Morgan, Iohn Sheckler, and Bob Wilsey, then presented 'Tm Always Chasing Rainbows. Bene Shan then appeared in a comic angel dance, and then the Chorale group tollowed, bringing Thou Swell to the audience. Atter this, three individual acts were presented. First in this trio was Marian Tomkins, who executed an acrobatic dance with skillg then, Karen Kaggie, who vocalized the ever-popular Over the Rainbow, and finally, Mary Freeman, injecting a classical note with Tschaikow- sky's Piano Concerto. E TRAVAGANZA 'Midst the striking setting of buildings in Act l, several dances added color to the Here scene. A Mexican Hat Dance was done by the team of Villanueva and Martinez, and Bosanne Biane and Dick Littler sparkled in an enjoyable routine to Frenesi. Entertaining in their novelty song and dance to Mr. Tap Toe were Vfilma Daniel and Fred Finazzo, then Fred professions ally tapped his way through 'Tm Sitting on Top of the World. A modern dance to Street Scene by Dale Buckwalter, Nadine Waters, Fred Finazzo and Marvis Beach, and a clever comedy song and dance by Mitnee Duque, Lynne Lewis, and Dolores Zdilor were two acts skilfully performed. Act l ended in a fantastic sguare dance by girls from the thirdfperiod modern dance class. Entre acts between Acts l and ll were performed by lohn Keither and his guitar and Ana May Warner and Dian Myers twirling batons. Top picture: Kcxrmen Ellsworth, Janice Tenney. Bottom picture: Gcly Helen Grover, Ado Myers, Jackie White. Still in 'iHeaven, members of the Ad- l vanced Boys' Chorus appealed to the Archangel himself in their Blow, Gabriel, Blow. Returning after charming the audi- ence in earlier acts, Fred Finazzo hams mered his way across the stage, while Singing in the Bainff Two more dancing groups appeared, number one was the third and sixth period modern dance groups swirling to the waltz, Carousel , number two in line was the team of Gay Helen Grover, Ada Myers, and lackie White, who brought back Tschaikowsky for the second time in Act lll as they glided through the ballet, 'Swan Lake. The combined efforts of the Chorale, Advanced Girls' Chorus, and Advanced Boys' Chorus brought down the final cure tain, and provided a suitable climax for the fifteenth annual Extravaganza. These groups literally rocked the streets of heaven with their finale-i'Great Day. Koren Kaggie, Elsie Carwell, Fanchon Carlsten A clever skit written by lnstructors Wilf liam Simonsen and Arleigh McConnell served to tie together the song and dance numbers of the l953 Extravaganza. A series of comical events led the characters from earth to hell and finally to heaven. Much confusion was caused by the Devils visit to earth to investigate atom bomb explosions which disturbed his heating system and to select a victim to make a report on Hades to the people on earth. The Devil, portrayed by Dave Flocker, obtained a faked passport to the United States from a sly character, who was played by Bill Kitchel. He selected a little girl, a mischievous little hot-foot art- ist played by Karen Ellsworth. Before they departed for down under, Paul lohnson, who acted as Saint Peter, made the Devil promise to send the little girl to Heaven after her visit in Hell. Lett: Marian Tomkins. The Tigers, however, did have a good long distance relay team, and two good sprinters in lohn Zion and Don Kauzlarich. One event where the Tigers did not have to take a back seat was the shot-put, as Don Vick defeated all opponents, and set a national record of 62 feet, 4 inches for the twelve-pound shot. There are a number of very excellent trackmen on the team. They will be juniors and seniors in a year or two, and when this time arrives, the Tigers should be up to the standards of past years. The A title was won by Riverside, and San Ber- nardino and Pomona won the B and C titles respec- tively. l55 9 fr ' it B Team Bottom picture-Row 'I: Jim Anderson, Richard Puz, Joe Govea Don Holladay Alan Barr, David Merriam, Larry Matthews. At the time of the yearbook deadline, it ap- peared as if the junior varsity would Win at least l3 of its l6 matches. They had lost two of these by a score of only five to four. lt also appeared that the varsity team would finish at least third, possibly second, losing six matches and Winning ten.
