SPRING TG THE SENKDRS QE '37 The four years that we have spent together at Chaffey have indeed been years of progress. The new buildings which we so much enjoy tell of the unfolding plans of Superintendent Spring and the Board of Education for a new campus, safe and convenient and beautiful. New courses and changing curricula are evi- dence that your school is making progress in rneet- ing changing world conditions. Some of you recognize changes in yourselves as you have developed from shrinking freshmen in- to young people alive to the affairs of your state and nation, and eager, each of you, to find your place. May the coming years bring to each of you increasing opportunities for service. Sincerely your friend, Ernest W. Fischer. ERNEST W. FISCHER Mr, Fischer, Miss Mainvil, Miss W lk ns Miss Bis ell M s G therie M M hl Mrs Mehl Silently and efficiently the otiice force has carried on the business be- hind the scenes in the crowded otiices. The convenience and comfort of the modern offices in the new building will be greatly appreciated. The iorce Was sorry to lose Miss Christman, who was transferred to the lunior College office, but they were consoled by gaining the new member, Miss Mainville. A social hour alter school! Big boys get hungry too! Several vacancies have occurred in the faculty due to death and resig- nation, including, Mr. Whistler, Mrs. Conger, Mr. Chaffee and Miss Hyde. However, their places have been effi- ciently filled by Mr. Pells, Miss Weber, Miss Feichtmeir and Mrs. Coke re- spectivey, making this year one of the most successful ever. Houchen The class of '37 will long be remembered as be- ing the first in history to get their sweaters in time for the football season. Those flashy green sweat- ers attracted much attention and were very popu- lar. Among the many class activities Were the annual play, 'iSeventeen, the Senior Mothers' Tea, and the now famous Water Carnival. Not to be forgotten are the informal dances and the fast- moving Pie Sale. The members of the class of '37 were leaders of all school activities, and brought home many' victories in athletics. The beef department was very large and lohn l7ranklin's steer was the grand champion. lncreased entries were received in the dairy cattle, poul- try, and pigeon sections. The beef, dairy cattle, pigeons, poultry, and goats were housed in the bus sheds, while the sheep, swine, and horses were at the northwest side of the park- ing lot. ln the Farm Mechanics exhib- it, held in their shop, were seen many fine examples of leather, sheet metal, and wood work. The Philatelic Club displayed an airplane made from stamps. The lunior Girls carried out the theme of Home Care of the Sick. Also shown were the baby books made by girls of the Soph- omore class. Traffic Safety was the theme of the English department, util- izing posters and charts to show the number of deaths and injuries caused by traffic accidents. Tag-er-inn, even better than last year, served delightful meals to many. The Spanish Club col- ected pictures and articles of Old Mex- ico. For their last contest, the boys Went to San Luis Obispo, Winning third. However, again they received a cup as high team in beef judging. POULTRY IUDGING .... A blocked kick, penalty, and a nice pass put Colton in position to score the only tally of the game. At Redlands, in the second start of the sea- son, the Tigers showed improvement over their first game, particularly in the air, and defeated the Redlands Freshmen l3-6. The following week the Santa Ana Saints, playing in a driving rain, were able to hold Chaffey to a scoreless tie, in a contest marked with many fumbles for both sides. ln the first quarter a touchdown was lost when MacKall fumbled on the Saints' twelve-yard line, Santa Ana recovering. Again in the fourth period, due to the wet ball, Cummings fumbled when crossing the goal line and Santa Ana recovered for a touchback. Ending the practice games for the season, the Po- mona College Sagechicks smothered the Tigers under a 27-U score. The backfielcl was in strange positions because of the absence of Cummings, hard driving back, and the game was played the same day that Senior sweaters were sprung. While the freshmen rolled off yardage at will, nothing Chaffey tried seemed to work. FOOTBALL Xt V GRID CARNIVAL lnaugurating a feature that promises to become an annual affair, a benefit football carnival was staged on the Chaffey field. The high spot of the evening was the grudge battle between the school Iuniors and Seniors, the Seniors won by a 6-U The Chaffey Cubs Won their contest with the Fontana ggfttifit . Cummings H. Ut Schiro L. Ram Orsburn C. Bleic Mac Kall K. Starnes team by a score of 7-O, and the Chaffey Freshmen Won from their Ir. High neighbors 6-O. Winding up the night's enter- tainment, the I. C. Freshmen Won over their older brothers With a lone touchdown. X1 ,gf fy I fftvflfsf liw TIGERS WIN COSTLY VICTORY I3-O Although the Tiger eleven were able, in their first league game of the season, to avenge the defeat handed them in the closing moments of last year's game by the champion Pol Bears, the revenge was not so sweet. Early in the second quarter Willie Starnes, shifty little back, received a broken leg, which ended his football ca- reer at Chaffey. The Tigers showed they had power, for most of the game was played in Riverside territory, and Albert Cummings demonstrated his driving ability by punching over the two touchdowns, one from the one-foot line, and the other from the thirteen-yard line. TIGERS SIVIOTI-IER CARDS I8-O Dedicating their new field and bleachers in their first home game, the Tigers were bad hosts and sent the San Bernardino Cards home on the short end of an I8-O score. All the scoring came in the second quarter as a result of a fast charging Tiger line, and some smashing drives by Cummings. TIGERS TRIP TERRIERS I3-I2 Refusing to be upset by the supposedly weak Redlands Ter- riers, the Chaffey eleven played sound defensive ball against the razzle-dazzle style of play used by Redlands. The Terriers were out in front I2-6 in the first quar- ter, but Chaffey came back in the second period to tie it up. Park- er's beautiful conversion then spelled victory for the Tigers. TIGERS SUBDUE RED DEVILS 7-6 Playing the brand of ball that has left the Tigers undefeat- ed in C. B. L. play, the Chaffey team outfought a scrappy Po- mona eleven to win over their traditional rivals and to bring home the championship. Pomo- na struck early, but Chaffey re- covered their fumble and start- ed a touchdown march that ended with a score early in the second quarter. Conversion from placement then scored that all- important point. The Red Devils tallied a little later, but the kick for conversion was blocked by the whole Chaffey line before it could rise in the air. LIONS CLAW TIGERS I3-0 Presenting two flashy sets of backs, the strong El Monte Lions eliminated the Tigers from the Southern California playoffs by the convincing score of I3-U. This game wound up a very successful season for the Tigers, and showed that they could play just as hard in defeat as when they were winning. ROW l: D. Donnelly, H. Utman, T. Schiro, C. Kropf, C. LIGHTWEIGHT FOOTBALL Although they ended up in fourth place in the final standings, the lightweights showed, by a close contest with Riverside, the league champions, that standings do not always show the real strength of a team, for the Poly Bears barely nosed out the Cubs l4-5 in their initial game. Playing the next game on the San Bernardino field, the Cardettes ran rough shod over the Chaffey Cubs with a 28-U score. Two 80-yard runs featured the San Bernardino light- weight's victory. Because of these defeats the Cubs went into the Pomona game the underdogs, but held the lmps to a scoreless tie. The Cubs threat- ened once by returning the kickoff deep into the lmps' territory, but penalties and a costly fumble ruined their chance to score. ln the final game the Cubs won their only contest of the GB. L. schedule when they defeated the Redlands team l3-6. The Cubs played their best game of the season by turn- ing a tie game into victory in the last quarter. TIGERS WIN CAGE TCURNEY Entering the annual Bonita I-ligh School tournament at La Verne, the Chaffey basket- ball team walked away with the winner's trophy. They defeated Burbank 20-8, their C. B. L. neighbors, the Red Devils 26-13, and the strong Whittier Cardinals 37-30 in the fin- als. The regulars saw action first in the Whit- tier game, for Coach Kaiser relied on his Iuni- or team in the earlier games, and again in the closing minutes of the Cardinal game, when the regulars were all put out on fouls. CHAFFEY TAKES LEAGUE OPENER 19-13 Staging a rally in the third quarter to break an 8-8 tie, the Chaffey Cagers won the npening league game played on Riverside's court. The game turned out to be a defensive battle, with the Tigers allowing their oppon- ens but five points in the second half. The regulars showed up well, and the strong Iuni- or team proved themselves when they open- ed the game and kept the score even. TIGERS WI-IIP CARDINALS 34-26 Playing in an inconsistent manner, the Tigers defeated the San Bernardino Cardi- nals in a contest much closer than the score would indicate. San Bernardino couldn't seem to head Chaffey, although early in the second half the score was tied 17-17. White and Doll of theTigers, and Webster of the Cards, tied for high point honors with 7 points each. TIGERS OUTCLASS RED DEVILS 46-25 In the final game of the season, the in- spired Tigers completely outclassed the Red Devil quintet on the Chaffey floor, to emerge with a tie for the C. B. L. championship, shar- ing the honor with the Pomona team. Both have two defeats and six Wins. Hank Doll, Tiger mainstay, again took high scoring hon- ors with l6 points. BASKETBALL 79 H. TIGERS RUN WILD OVER BERDOO 33-14 t'Hank Doll led the scoring with l2 points, when the Tigers defeated the San Bernardino Cardinals the second time, to dedicate the new gymnasium with a Victory, and place second in the league standings. The game with Pomona, the league leaders, is yet to come. The contest was never close, tor Chatiey established an early lead and kept it throughout the game. REVENGE ON TERRIERS 26-20 Coming from behind in a slow starting contest, the previously cautious Tigers blazed into the third quarter to score l5 points and put the game on ice. They then proceeded to protect that lead in spite ot the Terriers' scoring spurts. The Tigers were seeking revenge on the Redlands team, and as it was, almost every man took part in it, tor the scoring honors were evenly divided. f . ,- I Aja . 1 .V gf-V611 , J , 1- f - , 'f -,jf-ja' . . fy if l U I aft, ji ...- r 511 Q17 ,- 1 , f f ' gf if Qjf .V e Cf' I f , e diff' .fljkxl ff v , JA 'bfi 'A I tiff f ' ML ,V if T ' 4 nf- ,K -f -' I, I A In 1 W,-J I . The Poly Bears edged out the Cubs 22-Zl, lout they came back in the final game to defeat Pomona 25-7. TRACK Although Coach Pop Kegley loses much ma- terial through graduation each year, he produces track teams that are always in the running, as the records show. This year was no exception, as the Tigers won the Huntington Beach meet for the fourth successive year, with Riverside the runner up. At their own Invitational meet the Tigers again played the poor hosts, to total 28 points for the winner's honors while Riverside was getting 22, and' Monte- bello l8. Gordon Sible, co-captain with Howard Utman, Tiger low-hurdler, broke the broad jump record with a leap of 23 feet 55 inches, and De- Berard, Tiger vaulter, established a new record, held jointly by Peterson of Carpenteria, and Mc- Donald of Fullerton, of l2 feet 62 inches in his event. Other first place winners were: Thomas, who won the 880 in 2:53, and Hoot Utman in the 220-yard low hurdles. Hank Doll and Benson Hall placed third in the pole vault and low hurdles respectively. P. L. on the San Bernardino oval for the twelfth time' in fifteen years. Ohaffey ran true to form to score 56 points to nose out the Poly Bears, who garnered 525 points, and San Ber- nardino with 38. From the opening event to the re- lay it was a battle between Chaffey and Riverside, but the Tigers forged into the lead when Utman and Hall ran one two in the low hurdles and second and third in the highs. Outstanding were Sible's 6 foot l inch win in the high jump, his 22 feet lil? inch leap in the broad jump, and DeBerard's vault of l2 feet 6 inches, which set a new O. B. L. record. Adding this championship to their victories in the Ohaffey lnvitational and Huntington Beach meets, beside numerous dual meet wins, the Tigers have completed the most successful season in Chaf- fey track and field history, and established a record of which to be proud. Wooten, in the dashes and broad jump, I-lickok in the low and high hurdles, Pearson in the pole vault, and Mc- Guire in the 330 looked outstanding on the Cub squad. The Tiger Cubs lost their dual meets and scored but one point in the novice division of the Chattey lnvitational meet, but came back strong in the C.
