Each year at the conclusion of the awards the student body reciprocates in part by honoring some member of the faculty or administration. It is always difficult for the students to make a selection since we are fortunate enough to have so many who deserve the honor. Tliis year we have chosen one who has been both teacher and administrator with the Chaffey District for twenty five years. It is with great pleasure that we dedicate the 1969 ARGUS to Wilham Groneweg. The Chaffey College Men ' s and Women ' s Glee Clubs are widely known throughout the community for their versatile repertoire, performing with equal skill and enthusiasm both music of the master composers and lighter popular music. Members are chosen by audition, and the Glee Clubs most frequently sing as a combined group, rehearsing together regularly as a mixed chorus. Climaxing many school and community appearances this year, the groups joined to present the annual Arts on Campus Spring Choral Concert, performing Gabriel Faure ' s Requiem and Mozart ' s Regina Coeli with a fuU community-student orchestra, and soloists chosen from the groups. A special privilege accorded the Glee Clubs this year was the opportunity to visit a closed orchestra rehearsal in the Music Center of Roger Wagner ' s renowned Los Angeles Master Chorale, of which director Joyce Shannon is a former member. Exciting plans for next year already include presentation of Humperdinck ' s Hansel and Gretel for Christmas, and a musical comedy in the spring. Staff accompanist is Mrs. Elinor Wilding. 96 CONCERT CHOIR ROW 1, left to right: Lorenda Rounds, Sandy Cutney, Kathy Kiaun, Anita Valdez, Grace Musser, Dailene Ross, Lois Leaiy,Lana Huddeston, Charmain Sundland. It is most appropriate that Ontario International Airport ' s official greeter, Miss Ontario International Airport, be a Chaffey student because of Chaffey ' s association with the airport. Chaffey CoUege maintains a hanger at the airport and has a very active flying program. Each year the Merchandising Club sponsors the search for Miss O.I .A. and students, faculty advisors, and participating members from the Chaffey community go into the search together. This is not a beauty competition in the ordinary sense of the word, but a competition to determine which combination of beauty, charm, presence, and ability to greet visiting dignitaries to the airport best represents Chaffey College. Citrus eventually went on to win the Southeastern Conference Championship and reached the semi-finals in the state play-offs. After defeating Southwestern, the Panthers traveled to Palomar and lost a close ball game by a score of 22-14. Palomar scored its winning touchdown with a little over a minute remaining. Bert Karrer, Chaffey ' s stellar quarterback, suffered a fractured jaw early in the second quarter and played an outstanding game despite his serious injury. He was lost to the Panthers for the remainder of the season. Chaffey dropped successive game to Cypress and Grossmont and bounced back into the winning column by defeating San Bernardino, 14-7, for a very satisfying win. In closing out the season, Chaffey lost to a very powerful Riverside team, 42-7, and ended its 1968 campaign with a 4-5 record. Bob Nichols and Bob Vandervort were selected on the first team All Conference; John Forrester and Ed Carroll were accorded second team honors. Chosen by the team as co-captains were Bob Nichols and John Forrester. The most valuable player and outstanding lineman awards were received by Bob Nichols. John Forrester was awarded the outstanding back award, and Dave Huey was the recipient of the outstanding defensive back award wliich was presented by the Chaffey College Quarterback Club. The 20th ranked J.C. team in the state came up with a few records this year. As Paul Smith, assistant Coach said, We ' ve had more sophomores on the squad tliis year than any other year. Bob Beam, Forward, rewrote the record book capturing the career (two year) scoring record, as well as the all time high scoring record. Beam finished the season with a 22.1 scoring average. He tallied 1,230 points in his two year stay at Chaffey, while at the same time turning in a robust 793 season record. By some strange happening both records are 28 points over the old ones. Chaffey ' s starting five were all mentioned to the all— EC team. Beam was selected to the first team; George Glonka, the team ' s leading rebounder, was named to the second team, while the team ' s leading foul shooter, Ceasar Garcia, was named to the third team. Kent Bane and Fred Hicks were received honorable mention. Of course, the Fantastic Five couldn ' t have overcome their down moments if it hadn ' t been for the fine coaching staff. Gentleman Barney Newlee, the head coach, kept his team together in the tight spots. Meanwhile Newlee ' s assistant, Paul Smith, was busy scouting Chaffey ' s opponents, so they could work out a suitable game plan. The team ' s feeling toward these two fine men is, They ' re really great men; both devoted to you and their sports. Congratulation to a fine ' 68- ' 69 basketball team, and continued success for a ' 69- ' 70 season. 131 BASEBALL Tom Benedickt TOP ROW; Jim Davis, Tom Benedickt, Terry Tuley, Denni Clark, Rich Householder, John Gaylord, Dave Hall, Greg Carver, Terry Ford, Coach Howard Lowder Ed Berk Darrell Cederlind 3|| Gary Cronan Denni Clark 132 BOTTOM ROW: Ernie Viveros, Louie Senato, Ed Bork, Rudy Mendoza, Darrell Cederlind, Gary Cronan, Jack Wcnger, Ron Rude. That year the Panthers compiled their tlrst winning season in over two decades. Winning fourteen games, losing thirteen and finishing third in the ten team Eastern Conference seemed hke a good start for the new era of baseball at Chaffey. 1968 has to be considered the banner year for Chaffey baseball thus far. The team compiled a 29-7 won-loss slate and won the conference with an impressive 16 and 2 record. The Panthers also won two major tournaments sweeping the Eastern Conference Tournament in February and the Southern California Junior College Tournament with 39 consecutive scoreless innings in April, beating Los Angeles City College in the championship game one to nothing on Bert Karrer ' s home run. Chaffey eliminated San Diego Mesa in the Southern California Junior College Semi Finals before losing two straight to Long Beach City College in the Southern California Finals. Graduation saw the departure of Casey Fulcher to San Diego State. Professional baseball inherited Bruce Olson (Yankees) and Dennis Gideon (Cubs). Their loss could conceivably create a large void in pitching but once again there seems to be more than ample strong replacements in the likes of sophomores Terry Tuley, Tom Benedickt and Norm Rush, Freshmen John Gaylord, Jack Wenger, Sid Rugli and Ed Bork. The Panthers possess enougli talent with the returning sophomores and outstanding freshmen to equal or surpass last year ' s accomphshments. Pitching once again is the strong point. Tom Smithson has been replaced by an excellent receiver who must hit to help. The defense will be sound and recent Panther teams have always hit. This exceptional season was made possible through a happy combination of talented freshmen and experienced sophomores, thus providing sufficient numbers and sufficient balance to produce a team where poise and ability were plentiful. Among the most noteworthy accomplishments in a year full of bright achievements was a mark of 54 ' 4 1 2 made by freshman Ernie Cathcart in the shot put. This distance places him first in the state rankings in this event with still more progress expected as league, Southern Cal. and State meets approach. Jerry Fellows recorded an early season mark of 24 ' 3 4 in the long jump which places him third in the state in his event. This distance is impressive but is still behind his school record of 24 ' 4 3 4 which he established last year and gave him number one ranking in Southern California in 1968. Fellows is a late season performer and should be a definite threat for the state championship. Ken Hogue, an Arizona State transfer, has led a very strong hurdle crew composed of Steve Wilhams, Roger Vignocchi and Dennis Murray to the top mark in the state in the shuttle hurdle relay with a time of 57.0. Individually both Hogue and Williams are tied for third in Southern Calif with a time of 14.7 in the high hurdles. Roger Vignocchi leads all of Chaffey ' s intermediate hurdlers with a fine time of 54.5 (a mark that ranks him third in Southern Cahfornia and is a new school record.) In the sprints Ken Hogue, Roger Vignocchi and Tom Bumstead did what no other sprinters have done in years at Chaffey College-they ran 9.9 in the 100 yd. dash. This is a unique change and most welcome after a long drought in this event. It seems natural then that a new school record should be established in the 440 yd. relay-which it was. Jack Sherman, Tom Bumstead, Jerry Fellows and Ken Hogue set a new standard of 42.0 in the league relays and later ran an un-official 41.9 at San Bernardino. Steve Basay has hsted a fine mark of 1:54.2 in the 880 which places him third in Southern California, but is only slightly ahead of three other Chaffey freshmen, namely Frank Cervantes (1:55.8), Victor Lemos (1:55.8), and Newell Boatman (1:56.5). These four have teamed up to comprise the two mile relay whose time of 7:44.5 is a new school record and is second fastest in the state this year. Bright things are expected from this group since they will all return next year. The one mile relay has become Chaffey ' s Hallmark of excellence over the past few years and this year ' s team is certainly no exception after an impressive and successful indoor track season Earl Chandler, Steve Basay, Ken Hogue, and Jerry Fellows turned their attention and efforts to the outdoor campaign with equal effectiveness. They have repeatedly run in the top times listed in Southern California. As the season progressed other runners came on to take their turn as a part of this select quarter— Victor Lemos, Newell Boatman and Frank Cervantes all ran fine races during the season for the mile relay team with no loss in the quality of the performance. At present the 3: 17.7 clocking by the group places them second in Southern California and fourth in the state with their best races yet to be run. It seems a fitting tribute that this impressive team should cap a highly successful year for Chaffey College track and field. E. Diaz, Dirter, R. Adams, H. Adams, Quezada. 144 Emie Cathcart, Uiscus Earl Qiandler and Jerry Fellows, Run 44u Howard Adams 1-2 mile Mark Hanson, Javelin John Saitaiii, Hole Vaiill Number One in the Stale. 145 WRESTLING Chaffey ' s wrestling team consisted of a fine group of nine grapplers tliis year. They were led and coached by the experienced and capable Jack White while competing in the tough, eleven-team Eastern Conference. The outnumbered Panthers gained victories over Citrus, Santa Monica, and College of the Desert. Hong Kong flu weakened the team in its losses to Barstow and Rio Honda. Heavyweight Rich Seaman placed third in the rough San Diego Naval A.A.U. tournament. Captain Al Sandlin placed fourth in the E.C. Finals, despite a painful back injury. Ed Carroll produced an 11-4 dual meet record and placed fourth in E.C. Finals. Joe Garcia, an Olympic Team qualifier for Mexico, placed third at both the E.C. Finals and State Regionals. Other team members contributing were Pete Hernandez, Ron Marlow, Galen Hall, Bill Tunney, and Mike Bond. Now in his fourteenth year on the Chaffey staff. Coach Burnison holds degrees from Ohio University and Purdue. GOLF OUTLOOK A big question mark-due to the fact that our three returning lettermen from last year will not be with us. Frank Gore, who played second or third man last year is working at a golf shop and thinking of turning professional. Pete Lane, who played fine golf as No. 2 or No. 3 man, was much improved this year as our team captain. He is planning to enter the service. David Davis, who played as an alternate last year, withdrew from school to compete with the working world. This leaves us with the potential of six new men as the nucleus for a team. Claude Ellena from Upland; Bruce Cima, Terry Marsh and Robert Nejera are up from Chaffey High; Phil Kajszo is the lone golfer from Fontana; and John Sedlock from Alta Loma will be giving it a try this semester. In spite of the fact that we are limited material-wise because of only Chaffey, Upland and Fontana High Schools in our college district, having golf teams, we hope to field a compefitive team this season.
