ARGUS Yearbook produced by students of Chaff ey College Alta Loma, California FOREWORD fe The vital role of any college faculty in fur- piering student education has recently been clouded by the growing insistence upon student power. While this Insistence cannot be ignored, the all-important role of the faculty must be recognized . It is with this thought in mind that the staff of this year ' s ARGUS has taken as its theme the faculty of Chaffey College.  €. fft-. I DEDICATION The Student Body of Chaffey College can offer no greater recognition of service to any member of the faculty or administration than to make that in- dividual the recipient of the ARGUS dedication . This year the honor goes to one who is retiring after devoting forty years to teaching and administration, twenty one of them at Giaffey . Musician , Teacher, Director of Admissions, Veteran ' s Advisor, Coun- selor, he will perhaps be remembered most warmly for his extensive association with Chaffey ' s many foreign students. We take great pride in present- ing the 1968 ARGUS to Mr. Westley Harmon. Ji) S5!! Founded originally as a private college, March 17, 1882, Chaffey was opened officially on October 15, 1885, and the first graduation took place June 1 1 , 1919, with a graduating class of ten students. On March 21 , 1931 , Chaffey Junior College dedicated its new buildings, making official the separation of college and high school. On March 17,1958, ground breaking ceremonies were held for the new campus, and in September of 1961 , Chaffey College opened for the first time at its present location. At this year ' s ceremonies special recognition was given to Clara Price, pictured above. Ontario International Airport is now a satellite field for greater Los Angeles and as such has achieved greater stature. Chaffey ' s association with the airport is a long standing one. The college maintains a hangar on the field and has a very active flying program. It is most appropriate then that the airport ' s official greater. Miss Ontario International Airport, should be a Chaffey student. Each year the Merchandising Club sponsors the search for Miss O.I. Entering the grid wars with ranks decimated through graduation and with an inexperienced ball club, the Panthers had a very profitable rebuilding year. During the regular season, Freshman Bert Karrer was the leading Eastern Conference passer with 1 1 I completions out of 277 passing attempts for a total gain of 1564 yards and 10 touchdown passes. He was also the total offensive champion (running and passing) with 1666 yards gained. Bert Karrer ranked third in the State in both passing and total offense for a total of 1852 yards in nine regular games. Eugene Carter was top pass-receiver in the Eastern Conference with 41 receptions for a total of 680 yards and 6 touchdowns. On the state-wide level, for nine games, Eugene ranked third with 46 pass-receptions for a total of 742 yards and 8 touchdowns. Panthers honored on the Eastern Conference first -team selections were; Bert Karrer, Quarterback; Eugene Carter, Offensive End; and Allen Jakobcic, Defensive Tackle. Eugene Carter was also selected honorable mention of the Junior College All -American Team . The Hordrock award is given to the boy who gives the best performance in each game. The following boys were given Hardrock awards: Eugene Carter (Orange Coas t and San Bernardino), Bob Nichols (Santa Ana), Bob Bellot (Citrus), Allen Jakobcic and Jim White (Fullerton), Bert Karrer (Cypress), John Forrester (Riverside), Gary Cronon (Golden West), and Rich Householder (Mt . The 1967-68 Basketball season for the Panthers finished with a winning season - the first since the 1961-62 season. Chaffey won 16 and lost 15 overall and were 10 and 8 in Eastern Con- ference play. This team was the highest scoring team in Chaffey College ' s history - averaging 81 .5 points per game. The Panthers have a unique record in such as they defeated every team in the Conference at leas t once with the exception of Fullerton and Santa Ana. There were notable victories in this season ' s play - the one-point victory over Mt. Son Antonio with Ceosar Garcia making the winning basket in the final six seconds; the 62-61 victory over Cypress when Cypress was, at that time, third in the Conference; the 113-108 win over Orange Coast when O.C.C. was in first place in the Conference; the 114- 1 12 victory over Riverside at R.C.C. - this was only River- side ' s second defeat in five years on their home floor. The Panthers finished the Conference season very strong by winning six out of the last nine games played in the Conference. The team received outstanding play all year long from Tom Waleszonia, who was the leading scorer and set a new school two-season scoring record; by Bob Beam, whose play the last month of the season was outstanding; George Glonka, who played at the center position, was outstanding all year; Terry VanHofwegen and with the fine play of Ceosar Garcia in the back court. There was also some outstanding play from the re- serve players: Paul Gardner, Eddie Glenn, Kent Bane, Bob Brantley, Sylvester McClellan, Bill Walk, and Lorry Rue. The Panthers are looking forward to next season as they retain Beam, Glonka and Garcia off the starting five. There are also some outstanding high school prospects in our district. Tom Waleszonia was voted the Most Valuable Player on our team and was also chosen on the First Team All-Conference Team. Bob Beam and George Glonka were also awarded con- ference honors. Versatility and team depth ore two key factors for success as the Panthers look forward to a great year . To date the team has compiled a commendable 13 and 4 won-loss slate and ore in first place in the Eastern Conference as the first round of play neors completion. The Panthers gave good notice of their intentions as they won the always tough Eastern Conference Tournament, winning four games in two days. Bruce Olson was named the Tourney ' s most valuable pitcher as was Casey Fulcher In the 1967 season. Blessed with numerous professional baseball prospects and fine college talent, the Panthers need only to gain experience to be big winners. Bruce Olson from Montclair High School brings with him a fine winning percentage of .800, compiling 64 wins and 16 losses in two years of high school and American Legion Baseball. His strong right arm is complemented very well with that of Casey Fulcher who was an All-Eastern Conference performer In 1967. His sinker and slider enabled him to win 7 and lose 3 In the 1967 season, and thus for he has won 5 and lost none. Outfielder Rudy Mendoza from Alta Loma leads all regulars with an outsta nding .440 batting overage. Other out- standing hitting performers hove been Mike McG lathery from Fontana, along with Montclair graduates Bert Karrer, Gory Cronan, Terry Ford, and Tom Smithson, who was on All-Eastern Conference selection as a catcher In 1967 and has improved enough to be considered one of the finest cotcherti In the junior college ranks. An additional factor that will undoubtedly contribute to a fine season is great team speed. Art Sedlock, Bert Korrer, Terry Tuley, Gary Cronan, Rudy Mendoza and Mike McGlathery run ex- tremely well. Sedlock stole four bases in one game against Mt. Son Antonio In 1967. Bert Karre, stole five bases against Cypress with a theft of home this season. Panther runners as a whole stol eleven bases in the Cypress game. There ore enough versatile athletes on this year ' s team to play very well at two or more position Mike McGlathery was an All-League pitcher In high school who ploys right field and first bas? for the Panthers and also pitches. Dan Solters from Alta Loma Is a fine first baseman who alsr pitches very well, and con play at third base. Bert Korrer con play anywhere In the Infield. Gar , Cronan can play in the outfield, infield and is the backup catcher. Fulcher is a good enout ■ infielder as well as a fine pitcher and hitter. This year ' s Panther Baseball Team needs just enough luck with hard work to not be conside; conceited when thinking in terms of something more than a league title. 144 WATER POLO Coach discusses tactics. Chaffey Scores! The 1967 Water Polo team completed its greatest season ever. It established a 24-8 overall season record and a 7-2 E.C. record to tie for second place with Fullerton and Santa Ana. The team terminated the season by being ranked 8th place nationally. The biggest victory of the year came when the Panthers defeated the Fullerton Hornets by a score of 13 to 12. This was the first time in Chaffey water polo history that this had been accomplished. In addition, the team won three tournaments and placed second in one. The team was composed primarily of freshmen along with one sophomore. Leading the Panthers was freshman Joe God- bout. Joe was voted the most valuable player on the team, placed on the 1st team AII-E.C., and was acclaimed to the All American Water Polo Team. Giving strong support and receiving conference recognition was Don Shattuck (1st team E.G.), Bob Riggs (2nd team E.G.), and Mike Asay (2nd team E.G.) all of whom are freshmen. Other outstanding freshmen were Bart West, Sandy Durham, Mark Holz, Jim Holloway, and a host of reserves. With the year of college level water polo behind them along with the new freshmen, the Panthers should be strong conten- ders next season. fflB : Almost! Adams scored seventh in the Eastern Conference Cross Country Finals, and the Chaffey team went on to score ninth. The lack of distance runners proved to be the deciding factor in the successor failure of this year ' s squad. Experience gained in dedi- cation, self sacrifice and hard wo rk has proved to be instrumental in the success of the spring track program. A bright crop of graduating senior distance-men in the valley holds much hope for future cross country teams at Chaffey College. The awards for this year ' s team were Rick Adams, Captain and most valuable cross country man; Howard Connelly, most improved runner; and Jerry Esqueda, most inspirational. Chaffey College had a track team in 1968 that was long on quality but short on quantity. With such men as Jerry and Richard Fellows, Dick Wat- son, Bill Pinalto, Tom Bumstead, Roger Vignocchi , Bob Kattenhorn, Rick Adams, and Tom O ' Haver running in two and three events the team made some fine individual showings but did not have enough scoring power to carry the team through to a successful dual-meet season. As the Argus goes to press Co-Captain Dick Watson holds the best time in the state for the 440. Co-Captain Richard Fellows has set a new school record in the triple jump with a leap of 46 1 1 2 . Jerry Fellows is ninth in the long jump. John Holladay is second in the javelin and the One Mile Relay team is third. Because of the quality of the members who make up the team the squad looks forward to a successful league meet - where final placing for the season is determined. In such a meet a small squad with a few outstanding men can give a fine account of themselves. The team morale and unity this year has been the best ever seen on re- cent track squads at Chaffey. The mile relay team had much to do with this spirit because of the men who made it up and because of the very suc- cessful indoor track season they enjoyed. This desire and spirit of self- sacrifice carried over to the rest of the squad and became a standard of behavior for the team as a whole. Dick Watson, Richard Fellows, Jerry Fellows, and Bill Pinalto (the relay team) have helped to make Chaffey a better track school and a force to be reckoned with in the one mile relay. At present their goal is the State Championship in this event - it is within their reach. Howard this year has broken his own and the college ' s record with two 68 ' s in competition. This year ' s Eastern Conference teams are all strong in a league dominated by Fullerton. Team scores of less than 400 which would have ensured a win in last year ' s play can be losing scores this year. New to the team are Pete Lone, Frank Gore, and Dave Davis. Coach Burn- ison expects to finish in the mid- dle of the standings or slightly higher. 155 TENNIS Co-Captain Steve Grimm RONT ROW: Steve Nicks, John Plesek, Dove Forden, Bruce Jackson, Bruce Bond, Steve Grimm. 1. John Plesek adding his Australian touch. An improved tennis team came in second in the Eastern Conference this year, losing to first place Fullerton J.C. the defending state champions. The team had five returning lettermen headed by last year ' s most valuable player and co-captain, Steve Grimm. John Plesek, last year ' s manager, added the Australian touch to the team. Dave Forden from last year ' s varsity held down the num- ber three spot, while navy veteran Steve Nix cinched his varsity berth after being released from active duty. Bruce Jackson and Bruce Bond, re- turning lettermen, and Mike Miller, a freshman from Montclair, are the remaining starters. Russ Stein, a marine corps veteran, was the team man- ager and alternate player. Next year ' s team will be centered around Nix and Miller with the ad- dition of letterman Tom Harris and Coen Couwen- berg, Peter Hanson, and Don George from this year ' s alternates. Chaffey has a strong team this year, winning over 75% of its matches, including competition with four year colleges. Specie thanks are due to Mr. Ma lone for his pa- tience during some of our more trying sit- uations. The staff regrets that this year ' s book is neither as large nor as colorful as we had hoped but budget restrictions were unavoidable. Perhaps next year we may return to the larger book with its ful color pages. 160 ■• Si i: ■■ ' ' - ' - --r V v yi tt L e z-h yn.t cy ■ ' ' -K.A - -i : z? - : - M r.
