This year's edition takes a candid look at administration, fac- ulty, students, and campus. The Staff hope that at least one moment of each of your lives is captured within these pages. May the pic- tures within assist your mem- ories in the years ahead in recalling incidents which you may otherwise have for- gotten. We are deeply indebted, for the color photography, to Dick Holk who, although no longer a student at Chaf- fey, gave of his time, energy, and skill. May the pleasure that you receive from this book equal the pleasure which we, the Argus Staff, experienced in putting it together. Dear Chaffey Students, Chaffey College is a continually growing and expanding college community. We are already recognized as one of the finest iunior col- leges in the state. Here at Chaffey, we have attempted to build upon existing programs, emphasizing scholastic enrichment and encouraging participation in extra-curricular activities. Student governments maior function is, of course, to represent the wishes of the students. However, for those participating in Student Council, student government further offers a chance to prepare for future leadership. This year's Council has been responsible for hiring a Campus Center hostess, planning for the expansion of the student owned bookstore, and initiating Gripe Week . Planning is now under way to establish a Faculty-Lecture Series, a high school leadership conference, and a Spring Sports Queen. ln addition, the traditional social activities such as Rival Rock, Days of '83, Convocations, dances and athletic events have been carried on. Serving the Associated Student Body has been one of my most challenging and rewarding experiences. To each of my fellow students I extend my thanks for your enthusiastic participation this year. On his shoulders the aspirations and ambitions of Chaffey sports have often rested, and through his con- stant service many athletes have achieved the pinnacle of success. Recognized as one of the most outstanding persons in his field, his talents and abilities are many, as well as far-ranging. He can mend a wound, a torn uniform or a broken heart. Devoted to the highest ideals of his profession and sportsmanship, he is always available to give attention and lend assistance when it is needed. His efforts are tireless, his work proficient and his personality un- equaled. In short, he is a credit to the position which he holds and to the college for which he performs his duties. His worth and achievements are valued in terms far greater than money or words could express. We now take this opportunity to offer our thanks for a iob well done and salute trainer, Earl Si Sicosky. 3 SPORT F R ll ff to ri htl Willie Richardson Coach Harold McClellan Harry Luciani Bill Gable-Head Coach, Second Row: CHAFFEY COLLEGE '64 FOOTBALL SQUAD- irst ow e Q : - , , , Mike McGougan-Manager, Roger Boman, Andy Heald, Steve Huftstutler, Mike Prosser, Doug Nelson, John Antonelli, George Colbath-Coach. Despite a disappointing season, Chaffey's basketball fans had occasion to cheer Coach Barney Newlee's hard- trying luckless cagers as the 1964-65 Panther contingent frequently displayed standout form while lacking the winning formula. After all was said and done, the Red and White compiled a 2-12 Eastern Conference record and a 9-22 overall mark. Although Chaffey's hoopsters finished EC play in the cellar, they gave some of the circuit's and state's best squads stiff tests before succumbing. Nevvlee's cagers, which no doubt were the best losing iunior college team in the state, suffered narrow defeats to league champion Riverside 82-76, second place Ful- lerton 86-81 and 110-101, and lost a heart-breaker to San Bernardino Valley College, 102-101. The Panthers came back to edge San Bernardino 87-63 and then bombed Santa Ana 104-72 the final league game of the season which was designated as Jess Evan's Night . Mathe was a standout for the Panthers through the season. 146 Swimming Under the adept tutoring of Coach Howard Theurer, in his fourth season at Chaffey, the Panther swimmers displayed standout form this season. At press time, Chaffey's aquamen had not completed their sched- ule, but it appeared that the Panthers were on their way to another suc- cessful season as they were second in the Eastern Conference with a 2-i record and owned an 8-4 overall mark. Despite the loss of Tom Schupbach, two-time all-American and Chaffey's Athlete-of-the-Year last season, the Red and White were bol- stered during the current campaign by five returning lettermen and an outstanding crop of newcomers. Leading the group of veterans were the M and M boys, all-Amer- ican diver Frank Melone and freestyle sprint ace Lou Mathe. Both played key roles last year, Melone finishing seventh in the state and Mqthe sixth in the Southern California iOO-yard freestyle race, as Chaffey fin- ished third in the EC, ninth in Southern California, and tenth in the state. Other letter winners competing on the present squad were free- stylers Ed Lahti, Karl Rambaud and Randy Vickers. Lahti and Rambaud added considerable strength to the team, both breaking a College swim record. Heading the list of rookies vying this slate were Bill Barnes lfree- stylel, Tom Smith lbreaststroke and individual medleyl, Tom Harris lfree- style and individual medleyl, and Lou Hitter lbutterflyl. Promise for the future was shown by Barnes and Smith as they each set a new college record. Barnes eclipsed the 500-yard freestyle mark for the third time this season as he stroked to a 5:51.41 clocking, while Smith erased the 200-yard breaststroke standard with a 2137.1 time. ti l A 151, , ' mifi'i 'Wfl'5lf,H53? iQiIltiif?5t?tgi'?'?TQlii21lfW:?l'1'Rfli-EW?li.iijl f fii-ilfat-fyfvttii i is f ttfwfa f'?ittlsls1r ft t .fi ltiietiffilfth F skit W might K l f, '.i,g,,A,gmkQfi,tfM N' if 'ii,ts1iifE Pftfi'1i+fr:2 72fff,,-,.r..,ASW94355.99'wfP.,fw:1tQikwgggliilftsltvtliifiiiEefl33i15wz'JlSi'f will -E. Former Panther diamond standout Arlen Downs, who completed his sophomore year as Chaffey's baseball coach, attempted to make amends for a dismal T964 slate when he sent a talented array of performers into action this season. Downs, who graduated from Chaffey High School and Then The college in T955 where he toiled as a hurler for The Panther horsehiders, also played pro ball for two years. Pitchers Harvey Smith and Terry Danielson were Down's only returning lettermen from last season's edi- tion, which registered a 3-T5 mark to finish on The bot- tom of The rough Eastern Conference heap. ln addition to Smith and Danielson, first baseman Gary Richardson, who received a monogram for his ef- forts onthe '63 squad, returned. Smith notched all-EC honorable mention recognition last year and nabbed the Most Valuable Player award forthe Panther nine. Richardson was Chaffey's top batter during the '63 campaign. Topping the list, of newcomers were all-Citrus Belt League catcher Tony Fattarsi from Chaffey High School who was the number one receiver for the University of California lBerkeleyl frosh team last year, all-Citrus Belt League shortstop Paul Zetts of Fontana, all-Citrus Belt League and all-CIF first team third baseman Larry Nufer from the '63 Chaffey High nine, all-Citrus Belt League outfielder Dan Finfrock of Redlands, and all-Citrus Belt League honorable mention pitcher Ron Walker of Fon- Tana. Walker, in a pre-league game against Glendale, hurled a no-hitter en route to a 4-l victory over the Vaqueros. The Panthers, who were beaten by Santa Ana 7-l in the consolation championship tilt in the Eastern Confere ence Tournament, amidst' seven errors and four passed balls, came back to shut out the Dons 6-O in the league opener for both teams. Letterman Smith looked brilliant in going the full nine innings and limiting the Dons to two scratch singles.
