Text from Pages 1 - 124 of the 1955 volume:

The Greeks had a word Tor iT, and included in Their vocabulary and myThology is The word ARGUS. To us here aT Chaffey, The ARGUS has come To be synonymous vviTh yearbook. To The Greeks, ARGUS was a hundred-eyed shepherd who kepT consTanT vigil, half his eyes were awake vvhile The oTher TifTy slepT. When ARGUS was slain The gods saw TiT To perpeTuaTe his life as The peacock wiTh his eyes Transferred To The plumes in The peacock's Tan. The peacock-a bird of rare beauTy and sTaTely grace-conTrasTs sharply wiTh The iungle savagery and ebony fury of our college mascoT, The PanTher. In our hope for more Tranquil Times, where The clouds of war are blown away To permiT The counTless eyes of The sTarry heavens To shine, and where The grim reminders of desTrucTion are replaced by The beauTy of growTh and progress, we have chosen The peacock-ARGUS in his Tinal form-To symbolize This dream. ,Q s ' 1,4 Choffey, Q6 SOI' G by d Te dono ound e pIoT of gr y-ocr SHI' TW O 883, on Morch I7, I os loid W College Choffey T O rsTone COITIS The size, enrollrnenT, ecl in cn U7 GJ L. ' 'TW 3 Escficafion The Argus is dedicated to one who has given his time and energy to Chaffey forthe past nine years He has always been able to give us the answers to our numerous questions whether they pertain to cur- ricula, room numbers, Psych. 50 answers, or Student Body affairs. Whenever anything needs to be done he is right There with a friendly smile and a ready ioke. The incoming students who meet him under his title of Registrar, the veterans who meet him as their advisor, and the Student Council members with whom he works, will never be able to express their thanks for all his help. But perhaps the students of 1955 can show their appreciation by dedicating this yearbook to the Dean of Men. The eyes of Chatfey are upon you, Leonard Mather, as we dedicate this, the 1955 Argus, to you. if i 1 Q Y cfmilziiffzafion - Qacuffy - Qgfczfff ly f T? PRESIDENT . . . Daniel B. Football season at Chaffey College during 1954 can be termed as highly successful as the Pan- thers improved steadily to end the Eastern Con- ference league campaign with a record of 4 wins and 2 losses for third place in the final stand- ings. Head Coach John Burnison of Ohio started his second season at Chaffey with a team that con- sisted mostly of newcomers to the college but plenty of hard work built Panther gridders into a strong team. George Colbath began his second year as end coach while Bill Gable also started his second season in the role of line mentor. Both aided greatly in producing a top squad. Regular trainer Earl Sicosky continued at his profession of giving assistance to iniured play- ers and deserves praise for another iob well done. The Panthers added a mascot to their team this year and Mike Smith of Ontario was always dependable when players needed all sorts of equipment. Things looked dim at Pantherville early in the season when Chaffey footballers were beaten in all four of their non-league games. But brighter days were ahead when Orange Coast fell, 7-O, on October l5 to give the Panthers their first win in the opening game of Eastern Conference league play. Win number two was added to Chaffey's score- book October 30 as Santa Ana felt the power of the Panthers who won, 20-6. San Bernardino handed Chaffey its first conference defeat of i954 the following week with the Indians squeezing out a 20- l 2 verdict. The Panthers rebounded the next week to out- score Fullerton, 23-21, in Ontario on November I2 in fog-shrouded Graber Field in a hard- fought contest. A week later saw the red and white clad Chaffeyans surprise Riverside by win- ning, 14-7. Chaffey's eleven had a chance to tie for the league championship against Mt. San Antonio on Thanksgiving Day but the unbeaten Mounties proved too tough and won, 41-O, to conclude the '54 grid season. Freshmen Howard Tipton and Vic Lopez did the quarterbacking throughout the year for the Pan- thers. Halfback Ronnie Schwandt gave fans thrills as the mighty mite broke loose for many long runs during the season. Panther players were honored at the annual Chaffey Quarterbacks Club banquet December 9. Fullback Dick Juliano received the Upland News Best Backfield Player Award and was also chosen for the Daily Report's Most Valuable Player Trophy. Guard Darrell Williams was honored with the Daily Report Kicking Award and center George Duff Finlay received the Norman A. Springer Best Lineman Trophy. The Glen M. Atwood Out- standing Sportsmanship Memorial Trophy went to end Bob Smith with Larry Echelmeyer chosen for the Arthur I. Peterson Most Deserving Non- Letterman Trophy. The Most Inspirational Award was given to Henry Guillen. Four team members were chosen to all-Eastern Conference league berths. Guard John Chavez and center George Finlay were selected for the first team while end Dave Gable and fullback Dick Juliana made the second squad. All of Chaffey's first string and several second squad gridders were honored with honorable mentions to end a rags-to-riches season for the Panther football team. Chaffey's basketball team ended the 1954-55 season with a 5-7 Eastern Conference league rec- ord for fifth place in the standings. Coach Harvey Shirk concluded his coaching of nine years as he is taking the director of athletics iob at Upland High. The Panthers finished the hoop season in gallant fashion as they upset the league-leading Fullerton Hornets, 7i'69, on our court. Chaffey cagers came back from a 38-29 halftime deficit to catch Fuller- ton with five minutes left and go on to win. Playing their last contests for the Panthers were Bill Eblen, Clark Goodwin, Bobby Gates, Bob Stod- dard, Dick Juliano and Bob Fowlkes. Eblen had the scoring championship stolen from him in the final game as he scored 'I9 while Riverside's Jerry Dueker tallied 25 for a season total of 271 to Eblen's 268. Panther hoopmen started out by winning their first two EC clashes but the going was rough from then on with many games lost by scantest of mar- gins. Knocking the Hornets out of their sixth straight undisputed championship gave Chaffey and Coach Shirk the satisfaction of bowing out as winners. Coarh Shirk talks io players at halftime. 'ZCZCQ Chaffey's track team had another highly successful season under the coaching of George Colbath, who concluded his second year as spike mentor. Panther tracksters, who were standouts all season, in- cluded: Dale Bunch, Dean Smothers, Bob Lamkin, Frank Corsaro, Jim Carmean, Stu Kushin, Ronnie Schwanclt, Paul Beloud, Bob Lee, and many others too numerous to mention. Bunch consistently ran the 440 just a fraction off of 50 seconds and was one of the top quarter-milers in the conference. Dean Smothers iumped around 22 feet in the broad iump and Jim Carmean skimmed over the low hurdles nicely in times close to 24 seconds. Corsaro ran the IOO and 200, Lamkin high iumped, Kushin pole vaulted and threw the iavelin, Schwandt ran the dashes, Beloud toured the half-mile, and Lee went the mile and two-mile.
