Rather go where there is no path and leave a trail. This Senior Class' Motto certainly fit the group. They have shown leadership ability in all areas: The Seniors won 11 academic letters, were leaders in athletics, and filled all the high school queen and king positions. They indeed left a path for others. Although work- ing with fewer members, the efficiency and productivity of the staff increased. Editors were Ron Eifert and Marta Dame, while junior editors were Joan Lange and Jamie Ford. Toni Welter was business editor and her staff consisted of Laura Halter, Denae Cook, Lisa Griffin, Kerri Sanders, and Jeanne Pfefferkorn. Sports editors were Rick Miller and Kathy Uhrhan. while David Dame and Paul Ivester served as photographer and art editor respectively. A Closer Look At Stu-Co The Student Council at Chaffee High School consisted of two representatives from each freshmen, sophomore, junior, and senior class, who were chosen by the student body. The year before, elections were held in the spring to determine the four presiding officers of the 1986-87 school year. Three seniors and one sophomore were chosen to lead the Student Council’s activities. Before Christmas break. Student Council distributed candy grams, which were candy canes that contained holiday greetings from friends and schoolmates. In February, Student Council continued the tradi- tion of a Valentine's Day Sweetheart Dance. Junior Eddie Pruett shows off his campaign slogan for the Student Council elections. 56 The 1986-87 Student Council officers were (as pictured above) Dawn Motes, president; Marta Dame, vice-president; Billie Miller, secretary-treasurer; and Shan- non Crowden, historian. A well-arranged hierarchy of officers was on reason for the wealth of activities. One of FHA's first activities was the release of helium balloons, which contained addresses for the finders of the balloons to reply. Another traditional FHA activity is their annual Christmas Dance. A King and Queen selected from FHA members were crowned. An event which we hadn’t seen in some time was a mock wedding. The Family Living class planned the wedding, where Dennis Craft and Lachelle Cook were united in holy matrimony. A reception was held after the ceremony, with refreshments prepared by other home economics classes. 1986-87 FHA officers are pictured at left. Instead of selling products for fund raising, the club tried a new angle. They constructed a Haunted House for the Halloween Carnival and turned the annual dance into a costume party with only High School in attendance. Other activities included the sponsorship of a Red Cross Blood Drive and the decorating of a car for the Homecoming Parade which captured first place. Larry Cleair and a newcomer to CHS, Mrs. Darcy Morgan, sponsored BEC throughout 86-87. Assisting the sponsors were president Matt Seabaugh, vice president Jeremy Dame, secretary Jeanne Pfefferkorn, and reporter Kim Glastetter. 62 Varsity Club-Active In ’87 Weight Room Planned Varsity Club was extremely active this year. In addition to running the concession stands at foot- ball and basketball games, the football team sold popcorn, and the girls’ basketball team sold can- dy bars. Toward the end of the year, construction of a new weight room was planned. The 12’x25’ room will house the weights that are currently stored on the stage in the gym. Volunteer labor will be used to cut down on costs; the weight room is expected to cost $15,000, most of which will come from private donations. The band's director, Mrs. Fisher, had the group meeting early, in August, to get their lips, fingers, and feet ready for the first football game. Catch It! The scoreboard did not quite tell the whole story for CHS Football this year. Even with a 3 and 7 record, the team gained over 600 more yards rushing and passing than they allowed opponents. We just didn’t quit; the kids hung in there,” said Coach Mick Wessel. This year got off to a rough start as the Devil team faced tough Malden, Dexter, and Portageville teams. Then for the 4th game, Chaffee got the chance to face another 1A school-Grandview, and upset their undefeated record. From there on, Chaffee dominated statistically in almost all its confrontations, without much to show on the scoreboard. For example, in the East Prairie game, Chaffee gained 396 yds total offense and 22 1st downs to their 166 yds and 7 1st downs, only to lose by 18 points. Then in the Springfield Greenwood game, Chaffee came out on the wrong side of more than a few controversial calls and missed a deserved win by 1 point. Next, after play-off bound Scott City’s revengeful romp over the Devils, Chaffee returned to defeat the Mo. School for the Deaf in the Homecoming battle. In the last game of the season, things finally fell into place, as the Devils posted a shut out over opponent Hayti. Rick Miller passed for 1314 yds. rushed for 607 yds. and earned a defensive spot on the All-State Team. Matt Seabaugh caught 39 passes setting a school record previously held by Coach Terry Glenzy. There were also many other close games including the contests with Portageville and rival Scott City. Chaffee was led by Seniors Jeff Davis, Brian Horrell, and Matt Seabaugh, and Junior Larry Horman. Davis had several hot nights when he scored 16 and 17 points a game, Horrell received the Defensive Award and was always one of the top scorers offensively, Spencer received the Hustle Award for his dedication to the team, and Horman received recognition for having the most rebounds, the highest field goal percentage, and the highest free throw percentage. John Walker. David Collier, and Mark Robinson. This relay team set a school record with their time in the 400m relay. Other athletes that placed were: Lance Eaker-3rd in high jump; John Walker-4th in triple jump; 3200m relay team of Joe Swain. Shawn Seyer. Mike Umfleet. and Chris Robinson placed 5th; 1600m relay team of Joe Swain. Shawn Seyer. Chris Robinson, and David Collier placed 5th. Lance Eaker went on to finish 8th in the pole vault at State, and John Walker achieved a 6th in the long jump at the state level. Rick Miller had an interesting state meet. He is shown at far right win- ning a qualifying heat. He went on to place 4th in the 100 meter dash, and second (?) in the 200 meter dash in a photo finish. State qualifiers: Mark Robinson (400m 800m relays). John Walker (long jump. 400m 800m relays). Rick Miller (100m. 200m. 400m 800m relays). David Collier (400m 800m relays). Sid Atkins (alternate-relays). Lance Eaker (pole vault). 110 Boys’ Tennis: Looking For A Bright Future. The boys’ tennis team ended their season with a 3 and 9 record, but Coach Mangels is looking forward to an improved performance because of the experience his younger players gained this year. “Bjorn” as Coach Mangels came to be called, claimed that he had never played before this year, but with study, hard work, and enthusiasm, he lived up to his nickname, and enjoyed the season, while helping the team do the same. The future is so bright. I have to wear shades. The excitement of the games didn’t quite affect everyone the same, did it Bradley? 112 Front row: Robbie Whitlock. Eddie Dowd. Trevor Fisher. A Prosperous Year For JV The 1986-87 junior varsity volleyball team had a prosperous year, topped by a third place trophy in a “Round Robin” tournament hosted by Scott City. The Junior Varisty was an exper- ience-laden team, consisting of six sophomores and three freshmen, with all members receiving a considerable amount of playing time. Winning hon- ors at the sports banquet were: Diana Pfefferkorn, Most Valuable Player; Kar- ren Shaffer, Most Hustle; and Sandy Lee, Most Improved. Members of the Junior Varsity included (Front Row) Sandy Lee, Karren Shaffer, Lachelle Cook, and Laura Cook. Other mem- bers were (Back Row) Theresa Hal- bert, Nikki Lanpher, Diana Pfefferkorn, Jill Tierney, and Debra Nation. Both the JV and Varsity squads were coached by Mrs. Bumgardaner and managed by Karry Ford. in Varsity Volleyball: Strong Contenders Although the 1986-87 volleyball team did not have a winning record, they proved to be strong contenders against their opponents. The Lady Devils were a well-balanced team, consisting of six seniors and five juniors. Hopefully, with five remaining members returning next season, the Devils can start a winning tradition at CHS. Four seniors walked away with awards at the Spring Sports Banquet. Winning top honors were: Becky Bag- well. Most Valuable Player; Billie Miller. Most Hustle; Brigette Nall. Most Points Scored; and Kathy Uhrhan, Most Im- proved. Members of the team included (Front Row) Kerri Sanders. Tabby Mar- tin, Gina Montgomery, Jamie Ford, and Kathy Uhrhan. Other members were (Back Row) Billie Miller. Jill Cook. Becky Bagwell. Pam Crump. Toni Welter, and Brigette Nall. 114 Becky Bagwell Pam Crump Billie Miller Brigette Nall Kathy Uhrhan Toni Welter © Lady Devils Climb To The Top ... ... Bring Home Chaffee’s First District Title. The Lady Devils captured CHS's first tennis district title sending 2 doubles teams to the state tournament while posting an 11-2 record. The CHS doubles teams were seeded 1st and 2nd in districts. This proved accurate with Jeanne Pfefferkorn and Michelle Whistler taking first place with teammates Marta Dame and Lisa Griffin second. Dawn Motes posted a standout 4th place finish in singles. That was our goal, to get both our doubles teams to state, and to win the district title,” said Coach Smith, “We accomplished that. This proved to be an exciting season for 4 seniors who began their tennis careers with a winless freshman year. 116 Doubles teams qualifying for state were Jeanne Pfefferkorn. Michelle Whistler. Lisa Griffin and Marta Dame. Varsity Tennis team: (kneeling) Lisa Hagan. Dawn Motes, (standing) Jeanne Pfefferkorn. Michelle Whistler, Coach Jeannette Smith. Marta Dame, and Lisa Griffin. J.V. On The Rise The J.V. team consisted of Jennifer Gordon. Sheila Umfleet. Kristin Tier- ney. Lori Little. Beth Askew, and Mi- chelle Corn, with Gordon and Tierney capturing the Jackson J.V. tennis tournament in doubles. The team was coached by Jeannette Smith (center). Varsity Girls: Small But Determined With only two senior girls returning the Varsity basketball team was short in ex- perience. They were low in number as well; the balance of the team consisted of three juniors and one sophomore. Howev- er, through hard work and determination a competitive team developed. After opening the season with a five game win- ning streak the Lady Devils went on to a 8-13 record. Girls that received honors were Becky Bagwell, Most Vaulable Player and High- est Point Average; Joan Lange, Highest FT Percentage, Highest FG Percentage, and Leading Rebounder; Jeanne Pfeffer- korn, I.C.E.; and Lisa Griffin, Most Im- proved. Becky Bagwell and Jeanne Pfef- ferkorn were also Second-Team, All-Con- ference. Memories for the Lady Devils include duckwalk, crisscross, Ms. Smith’s sayings, and the traditional pizza party hosted by Coach Smith. Top Row: Jeanne Pfefferkorn, Becky Bagwell. This capped off a tremen- dous season in which the girls only suf- fered three defeats. With plenty of tal- ented girls to work with, Coach Jean- ette Smith had little trouble putting to- gether a winning combination. This proved evident at the athletic banquet with five players receiving awards. They were Lisa Seabaugh, Most Valu- able Player and Highest FT Percent- age; Laura Cook, Highest Point Aver- age; Diana Pfefferkorn, Leading Re- bounder; Lachelle Cook, ICE Award; Sheila Umfleet, Most Improved Player; and Jenifer Gordon, Highest FG Per- centage. First, the Lady Devils won Districts for the thrid consecutive year, and then went on to an outstanding per- formance at State. Michelle Whistler duplicated her feat of last year, winning a first at State in the long jump with a mark of 17’5 , setting a new school record. Michelle also placed at State in two other events, she acheived a sec- ond place in the triple jump with a mark of 35' 10 , setting a new school record in the first year she participated in the triple jump. Mi- chelle capped a stellar performance with a fourth place in the 200 meter dash. Other state performers were Lisa Seabaugh: 7th in 300 meter low hurdles; Diana Pfefferforn: 10th in 1600 meters; Joan Lange: 5th in preliminary heat of 800 meters (setting a new school re- cord); and Lachelle Cook, Laura Cook, Jeanne Pfefferkorn, and Joan Lange qualified for state with a new school record of 10.39 int he 3200 meter relay. Jr. High Girls Basketball Gain Experience Strength In Numbers This year the Jr. High teams learned the fun- damentals while gearing up for a season of good basketball. Blessed with plenty of height, quickness and numbers in both grades Coach Jeannette Smith had little trouble put- ting together two fine teams. The Eighth grade team consisted of: (front row) Debbie Spane. Dana Held. Amanda Hunter. Yolanda Rauch. Christy McBride, and Jodi Martin (standing) Katrina Watson. Mi- chelle Graviett. To This A new grade school building, replacing the wing in use since 1909- 12, enjoyed its first full year of use in the 1986- 87 school year. The old wing of the grade school was condemned in the fall of 1984, and classes were moved to Camp Shiloh, on the grounds of the Church of God. Much busing between the grade school and Camp Shiloh was neces- sary for a year and a half, until the new wing was opened after Easter break, in April, 1986. The new wing houses art and music classes, re- medial serves, library fa- cilities, and the fourth, fifth, and sixth grade classes. For Grade School “Heaven On Earth” Probably the most improved facili- ties in the new grade school wing are the special services area. Mrs. Nancy McGrew, Chapter I coordina- tor for special services, describes the new building as “heaven on earth. It was like heaven on earth after spending sixteen years in a trailer, Mrs. McGrew comments, referring to the former home of spe- cial services, two mobile homes lo- cated behind the school. “The new building seems to create a positive attitude in both faculty and stu- dents. I think the students and facul- ty who were housed at Shiloh were really happy to be in the new build- ing. It's nice to have everyone back in the same building.” 133 Publishing the Mogul is a lot like constructing our new school building. Essentially, we started with nothing but ideas and a box full of yearbook supplies. There is considerable frustration involved in any construction. The rain delayed the early construction stages of our new building, and although inclement weather did not delay our publishing efforts, many other factors did: camera malfunctions, lost layouts, delayed pictures, and most of all, not having a class or time to meet and work together. We somehow got past all this however, and we have put together a book that we hope we will all value for many years to come. We hope that you are pleased with our efforts, and that we indeed did “Focus on 87.” fat Sfodr ADVERTISING We want to thank the following merchants and patrons for their support of the 1987 Mogul.
