DEVIL’S LOG GRADUATES .... RECOGNITIONS . STUDENT LIFE . ROYALTY ...... ATHLETICS .... UNDERCLASSMEN FACULTY ...... ... 5 1 21 47 63 91 109 As 1982-83 yearbook editor, I have learned the meaning and importance of criticism. The Mogul Staff and its efforts have been subjects of controversy for quite some time. Criticized for its journalistic approach in 1981, for its lack of snapshots in ’82, and for its attempt to change the yearbook title in '83, the Mogul Staff invariably gets the job done. The yearbook reaches completion due to the labor of its sponsor and the help of a faithful few. It is because of them that there is a yearbook at all. In this year's MOGUL, an effort has been made to supply more photographs and its name has been left unchanged. The idea for a change in title came about while Mogul Staff was discussing the yearbook theme. Members agreed on a futuristic idea and decided to carry it out in a log book fashion, patterned from television’s Star Trek log entries; thus, calling the yearbook “The Devil’s Log”. Students and patrons alike argued that a title change was too much a break from tradition, therefore: the yearbook remains THE MOGUL. The staff did, however, manage to maintain its stand on the yearbook cover - a change from the customary train. By accepting criticism and comprimising, the 1982-83 Mogul Staff has hopefully produced a satisfactory yearbook. I urge future Staff members to not let themselves be discouraged by criticism, but rather to use it in improving the yearbook. A class of 54 in size, this year’s Senior Class demon- strated qualities expected in any Senior Class. Throughout its four years of high school, this group of students provided leadership in athletics, aca- demics, and citizenship. It has been said by faculty and administration that the Class of '83 has been one of the best to graduate from CHS. Besides setting examples for underclassmen, the Class of '83 experienced the malady of senioritis. Graduation was on the mind of every senior. Preparations for what lay ahead and the anticipation of being freed from school kept the class preoccupied for most of the year. Despite the year's anxieties, the Class of '83 proved its worth to CHS and itself. With this in mind it planned activities. Perhaps the most significant and far reaching event was the Blood Drive, which the Council sponsored in cooperation with the Red Cross. As for serving the students, the Student Council sponsored its annual Sweetheart Dance. Each club and organization was represented in a coronation. Debbie Dannenmueller and Tim Crowe who represented FHA HERO, were crowned King and Queen. Along with serving the students and community, the council also felt the need to become “more visible within the student body. To make this possible, it purchased buttons, which members displayed on their letter jackets. With the efforts of the 1982-83 council the groundwork was laid for many future years of productivity. Musical numbers such as “I Got the Music in Me , theme from New York, New York , and a salute to Walt Disney gave the crowd enter- tainment during football games. Another addition was Drum Major Steven McLemore. CHS band paraded in Benton, Sikeston, and in the Jackson band festival. Far Left: CHS Marching Devil painted by Linda Williams. WE’VE GOT RHYTHM 38 COLOR ON PARADE Next to the band itself, the auxiliaries (Pom-Pons, Flag Corps, and the Twirlers, were most im- portant in bringing enter- tainment and color to the audience. This color was intensified by the re- established Flag Corps, participation of Junior High in the auxiliaries, and the addition of Drum Major Steven McLemore. These changes brought about a certain amount of sensation, giving the audience, and most music lovers the feeling of self participation in a spirited and lively group. The 1982-83 members of the Pom-pon squad were Robin Volner, captain; Donna Treadway; vice captain; Tabby Martin, Linda Williams, Tracy Dooley, Robin Sullivan, Jamie Ford, and Lisa Shelton. CHS CONCERT BAND Due to a conflict in spring break, the concert band did not attend the music contest hosted by SEMO. Soloists representing the band did, however; bring home many good ratings. The spring concert held on May 10, was a pro- gram with a new flavor. The select vocal ensem- ble added to the concert. The concert band also attended the evening per- formance of the music clinic hosted by Central High School. The band did not play concert pieces and was given a tremendous response from the crowd. These terms are not extinct, but are dwindling because of terms such as software, microprocessors, ROM, RAM, AND REG. The clicking, bell-ringing world of the pinball game has been invaded by flashing lights, beeps, and bleeps. The alien is the video game and it has brought an army of silcon chips, joysticks, and action buttons. Companies such as Atari, Magnavox, and Mattel have turned video games into a profitable business. The millions of quarters being chomped up by video games have cranked out billions for the companies. Arcades such as the “Gold Mine”are the best place to find a video game. The saying “There's no place like home” is also true of video games. Cartridges and video computer systems have also taken over the home. There are many reasons for playing video games. Whatever your reason, have fun playing video games. 45 46 ROYALTY CHS HOMECOMING TOPS THE CHARTS Homecoming activities at CHS came to an abrupt halt on September 29 after the McLeansboro Foxes forfeited the Satur- day homecoming game due to a teachers’ strike. Nevertheless, the activi- ties returned full swing on the following Monday. Students paraded through the halls in colorful cos- tumes of the past, present, and future portraying school spirit. ‘‘Bum Day” gave Nan Whistler and Mia Leggett a chance to show their true threads, while 50’s Day gave Kevin Dannenmueller and Stacy Duniphan the adventure of journeying back to the past. By turning themselves inside out, Debbie Dannen- mueller and Tim Crowe gave a glimpse of the unfortunate fate of the East Prairie Eagles. Thursday brought out the futuristic punk rockers who proved that Chaffee would rock to the top with a victory. Concluding the week’s numerous activities were the Wacky Olympics and the Homecoming Parade. Friday evening, reigning Queen Theresa Craig- miles handed down the throne to Stacy Duni- phan, the 1982-83 Home- coming Queen. 48 Above: The Homecoming Court consisted of Sandy Send boy, freshman. Tracy Dooley, sophomore: Tammy Spane, junior; second maid Lisa Shelton, senior; Queen Stacy Duniphan, junior; first maid Tracy Spane; freshman, Debbie Dannenmueller, sophomore; and Laura Perdue, senior. THE LOOK OF LOVE” FHAer’s chose The Look of Love” as the theme for the Chapter's annual Spring Formal, Saturday, March 18, at the new gym. Supportive of the theme were Peanut” characters such as, Peppermint Patty and Charlie Brown, Sally and Linus and, of course, Snoopy and Lucy. Complimenting the cartoon couples were CHS's own sweethearts. Candidates were Jill Brown and Greg Little, Sandra Tinnon and Gay Spane, Dolly Pruitt and Vernon Seyer, Cathy Reed and Tim Richbourg. Jill Brown, freshman; and Greg Little, sophomore, receiving the most votes were crowned FHA HERO Queen and King. The remaining three candidates, Cathy Reed, Dolly Pruitt, and Sandra Tinnon tied for first maid. Along with the annual coronation ceremonies, Billie Miller and John Walker were chosen Eighth Grade Princess Prince. Pam Crump and Brian Foulk were also candidates. Sandra Tinnon and Cathy Reed tie for first maid 51 Pam Crump, candidate for Eighth Grade Princess 53 54 55 ANGELA DUNCAN CROWNED MOGUL QUEEN SAM DUNCAN, DA VID KIRCHDOERFER TIE FOR MOGUL KING The 1982-83 Mosul Staff continued its projecting outlook by welcoming students to the future at its annual yearbook dance. A modern city provid- ed the backdrop for senior candidates Emily Darby, Angela Duncan, Leah Kilburn, Cathy Reed, Donna Treadway, Dan Asmus, Sam Duncan and David Kirchdoerfer. This year's dance was another break from tradition. For the first time in CHS history a tie for Mogul King existed. As fate would have it, David Kirchdoerfer and Sam Duncan received an equal number of votes and thus shared their reign with 1982-83 Queen Angela Duncan. 56 Members of the royal court were Leah Kilbum, Donna Treadway, Emily Darby. Cathy Reed. Robin Volner. and Dan Asmus. Serving as escorts were junior staff members Steve McLemore. Steve Sadler, and Bobby Lands. 57 JUNIOR-SENIOR PROM 58 PROGRAM INVOCATION ... In the midst of a sixteen game losing streak, the Devils felt they dominated their opponents except in points. Due to McLeansboro's teacher strike, they were awarded their first win by forfeit. This proved to be the turning point as the Devils finished with a 6-4 record. Picked to finish fifth in conference in a pre-season poll, the defiant Devils placed a respectable second. Not being blessed with much height, the girls knew they must develop other skills besides block- ing and spiking. The resources that they turned to were strong serving, smart net play, and a hustling defense. The season progressed as the girls became masters in the dink, the dig, and the overhead serve. The result was a much improved 9-7 record. The future also looks bright as the junior varsity girls gained valuable experience and boasted an 8-6 record. Sr. Basketball is a game of sweat and determination. Without the two the game means nothing. The Chaffee 1982-83 Red Devil Basketball Team possessed those qualities as they pressed on throughout the season. Even though Coach Mick Wessel did a fine job coaching, and the players were determined to win by working to their potential, the Red Devils did not do as well as they had hoped. Although they finished the season with a 4-12 record, they never failed to hustle. NEW STRATEGY FOR LADY DEVILS Changing her “Eye of the Tiger’’ campaign in tennis to her candy crusade in basketball (“Lick the Tigers ) new Coach Jeannette Smith turned the Lady Devils on. Beginning the season against rival Scott City with a double over time loss of 51-53, the Lady Devils battled their opponents throughout the season. The Lady Devils upped their record 9-11, finishing their regular season with a win against Oran. I I «$ $ '' i V '• '• . I li'j ft m; Cheryl Bentley, Jr. S Laura Perdue. With some cagey coaching and deter- mined effort from the players, the Devils hit the road for Columbia to play in their first state champion- ship game since 1977. The Devils defeated the Plato Eagles 3-0 in semifinals and the Englewood Christian Knights 6-2 and in the process tied three state records. With an overall record of 16-5, the Baseball Devils also emerged as the Co-Conference, District, Sectional, and Quarterfinal Champs. This was possible with a combined team effort comprised of 130 runs on 162 hits with 97 RBI’s, 91 stolen bases and an impressive team batting average of .312.
