His third time winning of a blue ribbon first rating also brought his third col- lege scholarship and the possibility of additional honors and awards as a Finalist at the Na- tional Science Fair International in Seattle. Not too far behind John is Dewayne Bryant whose Science Fair chemistry blue ribbon and college scholarship were won with a project on UTILIZATION OF CORN STALKS. Alongside Dewayne is Jack Maxwell whose project in physiography - - EARTHQUAKES' — took another blue ribbon and college scholarship. At the head of the Chaffee FSA is President Marilyn Caul, only sophomore who com- peted in the physics division of the Regional Science Fair. The club is proud that against a field of 28 high school juniors and seniors our president won a third place ribbon with her radiation fallout project. Mike Lilliker with his RADIATION VS. GERMINATION, and Wayne Long with his CARBON FOURTEEN TRACER IN PHOTOSYNTHESIS got valuable experience with their first-time exhibits. Keeping books for our FSA is Treasurer Maxine Camp. Behind the small intestines is Mogul Photographer Dan Strebler. Riding the liver is Richard Sater. He is the club craw-dad expert. On the torso platform is David Schaefer who so consistently scored high on biology tests that other students usually just asked, Who was second on the test this time? President Sponsor Recorder President mentarian Manci This fall the band was kept pretty busy with marching. We started the year by going to Sikeston for the Rodeo Parade. We were rained out of the parade but we went back a few days later for the Rodeo. Our football half-time shows had us practicing every day we could get outside as we had six of them. Four of them were one week apart but somehow we managed to feature the cheerleaders, majorettes, do a Droodles Show, a Veterans Day Program, and two precision drill shows. The Cotton Carnival at Sikeston, the Jackson Band Festival, and the College Home- coming at Cape finished the year's marching activities. As a concert band we gave an exchange concert with Illmo on March 28. Our Spring Festival was held at Bell City this year with Mr. Tom Birch from Central College as the guest director. On May 4 we presented our Spring Concert, and closed the year by play- ing for the graduation exercises. - 66 - Chaffee High School Concert Hand Row I; Margaret Imhoff, Lillian Gilmer, Jackie Von Kessell, Terri Ancell, Wayne Long, Jody Uhr, Richard Keller, Vickie Smiley. They rehearse twice a week and have given three performances this year. In October they performed on the Halloween Carnival program, playing three numbers. May 4th they took part in the Spring Concert along with the A Cappella Choir and the Sen- ior Band. J Cap pe I la Choir The A Cappella Choir is a select organization. Try-outs are held and only those students with above average voices are selected. The member- ship was again limited to 40 this year. This group has no scheduled time during the school day to rehearse so rehearsals are held twice a week at night. The choir began the year's activities by presenting a concert at Illmo. The Choral Festival at Cape this year was also attended and the choir mem- bers spent a day working with Dr. Roger Fee, the guest director. On May 1, the choir sang for the Rotary Club, and on May 4, presented its Spring Concert. We closed the year's activities by singing for the grad- uation exercises. There were several outstanding players this year. We finished with all eleven men getting some mention on the All-Con- ference team. First Team were Larry Meyr - guard, Jim Hunter - tackle, and Jim Limbaugh - fullback. On the Second Team were Steve Cunningham - end, Ronnie Gilmer - quarterback, and Jim Owens - halfback. Receiving honorable mention were Jim Phegley - end. Van Smith - halfback, Mike Bond - center. Tyke Finney - guard, and Wayne Chapman - tackle. Our record was 5 wins, 3 losses, and 1 tie. Sikeston - 20, Chaffee - 7 The Sikeston Bulldogs scored twice in the first half to lead at half time 12-0, but the Devils came back to score in the third period but could never quite get the ball across the goal line. It was a hard fought game, but Sikeston'$ superior bench proved to be the difference. Portage ville - 0. Chaffee 34 The Devil offense got rolling and overpowered the Bulldogs. The defensive team allowed the Bulldogs only one yard net rushing for the night. Jim Limbaugh scored three touchdowns and four extra points. Dexter - 25, Chaffee - 6 Satan’s Boys jumped off to a 6-0 lead in the first minute of the game and held this lead until late in the third quart- er. The Bearcats scored four times in five plays to win the game and what proved to be the conference. Hayti - 0, Chaffee - 3 The Devils and the Indians played to a bruising 0-0 tie until late in the fourth quarter when Jim Limbaugh kicked an 18 yard field goal with 1 minute and 32 seconds left to win the game. Malden - 6, Chaffee - 20 The Devils grabbed three quick touchdowns in the first half and then coasted the rest of the way to win by two touch- downs. Charleston - 6, Chaffee - 0 The Red Devils were blanked for the first and only time this season by the Charleston Bluejays. At this time Charles- ton was the number one power in Southeast Missouri. Charleston scored on the third play of the game after a long kick-off return. When the final gun went off, the Devils were on the three yard line but ran out of time. Perryville - 0, Chaffee - 29 Jim Owens, Devil halfback, ran wild this game and scored three touchdowns. The Devils opened up their shot-gun offense with Owens going 81 yards to score on a reverse play. In this game a lot of substitutes got some valuable experience for next year. East Prarie - 13, Chaffee - 13 The Red Devils ran into some stubborn opposition from the Eagles who fought back to tie late in the game. The Devils missed a chance to win the game on the last play as a Devil halfback dropped a pass in the end zone. Anna-Jonesbourgh - 0, Chaffee - 12 The Red Devils closed out their season on a winning note by defeating Anna, a team who had beaten us soundly the year before. All seniors played hard throughout the game to close out their careers on a winning note. - 78 - Ron Gilmer, Senior Quarterback, 2nd Team All Conference, 3 year letterman Jim Hunter, Senior Tackle, 1st Team All Conference, Honorable Mention All State, 2 year letterman Jim Phegley, Senior End, Hon- orable Mention All Conference, 3 year letterman Larry Meyr, Co-Captain, Sen- ior Guard, 1st Team All Con- ference, Honorable Mention All State, 3 year letterman Jim Umbaugh, Co-Captain, Senior Fullback, 1st Team All Conference, Honorable Mention All State, 2 year letterman DAIRY Mike Bond, Senior Center Hon- orable Mention All Conference, 2 year letterman Steve Cunningham, Senior End, 2nd Team All Conference, 1 year letterman Dan Smith, Senior Back, 1 year letterman Jim Cowles, Senior Tackle, 2 year letterman Tyke Finney, Junior Guard, 2 year letterman Jim Owens, Junior Back, 2nd Team All Conference, 3 year letterman Wayne Chapman, Junior Tackle, 2 year letterman, Honorable Mention All Conference - 80 - Jody Uhr. The 61-62 Red Devil basketball team had a very successful season this year compiling a 20 wins and 3 loss record. The three losses came at the hands of the Advance Hornets and the Perryville Pirates. All three were by small margins. The Red Devil squad captured two tournament championships and one second place. They won the Notre Dame Invitational and the Scott-Mississippi Tournament and finished a close second in the regional behind Advance 58-56. The Devils had excellent personnel in the person of Steve Cunningham, the big 6-6 center, and sophomore Dennis Meyr. 6-4. Rounding out the first five were Bob Holdaway 6-0, Ronnie Gilmer 6-1, and Larry Meyr 5-10. These five boys showed good hustle teamwork and desire to lead the Devils on to victory. The second five was compiled of three more sophomores and two juniors. They were Van Smith 6-0, Jack Wessel 5-8, Tom Davenport 6-0, Gary Cook 5-9, and Douglas Steimle 6-3. These five returning lettermen with Dennis Meyr could give the Devils another winning combination next season. The Devil B team won 7 and lost 10 for almost a 500 season and they had their bright spots also. This team was made of freshmen and sophomores mostly with a few juniors. These boys gave a good account of themselves and always showed a lot of desire, fight and nustle. They should prove a good asset to next year's squad.
