President Donald Heeb ..................................... Vice-President Marilyn Whitaker............................ Secretary-Treasurer Leslie Lankford .................Chairman, Executive Committee Patricia Castleman ............................. Drum Majorette The Chaffee High School Band was kept unusually busy this year. This was partly due to our director, Mr. Honey. The Jackson Band Festival this year was held in honor of him. His life was reviewed and the numerous accomplishments throughout his career were mentioned. Mr. Honey has been a musical leader in Southeast Missouri for the past thirty-eight years. The numbers 140th” were formed on the field by the bands participating in honor of the 140th Infantry Band which he directed for twenty-one years. Then the letters of his name, OSCAR HONEY, were spelled out by the twenty-one bands taking part. Mr. Honey was very grateful to everyone. At a program later this year Mr. Honey was presented a plaque from the student body, faculty and school administration. Engraved on the plaque was this little verse which fits Mr. Honey perfectly: Who can divine ought more fine For man to leave behind, Than this fair fame, he had the name Of always being kind.” The 1953-54 Band consisted of thirty-nine members, four twirlers, and one drum majorette. The uniforms were blue and gold as they have been for several years. One of our members, Leslie Lankford, was chosen to play in the All- State High School Band. Rehearsals were held in Columbia, Missouri; then on October 28, this band played under the direction of Mr. Leroy Mason for the State Teachers’ Association at the Kiel auditorium in St. Louis. • A few of the things we took part in were: Halloween Parade, Dis- trict Band Festival at Jackson, Santa Claus Parade at Cape, Northern Division of Southeast Missouri Bands’ Spring Festival at Cape, played for the Dramatic Club’s play, P.T.A. several times, Frisco Safety Meeting, V.F.W., at several football games, and gave Thanksgiving and Christmas programs in the gym. A beginners’ class of the following members was started January 6 by Mr. Honey: Ralph Ward, Bucky Finney, Tyke Finney, Diane Lankford, Delmar Wachter, Carolyn Buckhannon, Janet Vickery, Michael Bukstein, Shelby Patton, Janice Bukstein, Janis Lee Maxwell, Peggy Castleman, Mary Peterman and Don Cheek. A recital was given by this group near the close of the year. Those who are seniors and are leaving our ranks this year are: Jae Hopkins, Leslie Lankford, Marilyn Whitaker, Patricia Castleman, Donald Heeb, Raymond Shackles, and Royce Cannon. ■51 H LF.S LANK I OKI ) Saxophone • -54 Patricia castmman Drum Majorette GIFNDA GRFEN Miiorvttc 46-54 MARILYN WHITAKER Drum 53-54 I At HOPKINS Clarinet ■W-M 'W. Three of these games Charleston, Jackson, and Sikeston” were outside of our conference. Jackson was a new team on our schedule this year. The Red Devils took third place in the Little Seven Conference, win- ning four and losing two. Chaffee played its best game against the Dexter Bear Cats, defeating them 13 to o; the Bear Cats were undefeated previous to this game. The Red Devils will lose 7 boys from their squad this }rear through graduation, but we still are looking forward to the 1954 season with enthusiasm. BasLllJl 1953-54 The Chaffee High Red Devils had a successful season in basketball for the season of 1953-54, winning 13 of 16 scheduled games and placing second once again for the second straight year in the County Tournament. They won the Scott-Mississippi County Conference Championship for the first time going undefeated in 9 games. They placed 4th in the Advance Invitational Tournament. The Red Devils lose 5 boys from their squad as a result of graduating. They are: Jim Chronister, Royce Cannon, Sam Peterman, Clyde Vessell, and Don Heeb, the latter three from the first team. The B Team had a good record this season also, winning 10 and losing 6. We are looking forward to a good season in 1954-55. Sas.latt The Red Devils” finished the 1954 baseball season with a good record of six wins and four defeats. Their schedule was composed of three out- conference games, six conference games, and one game in the District Tourna- ment at Cape Girardeau. The Devils will lose six players through graduation this year. These boys are: Clyde Vessell, Jesse Harrell, Don Cheek, Sam Peter- man, Jae Hopkins, Larry Free, and Don Heeb. These boys will be badly missed, but the Devils have hopes for a good season next year in some promising Freshmen and Sophomores. So here’s looking forward to a fine new season in 1955. The first activity was the annual Varsity Club Dance, held in the com- mercial room of the Home Economics building, on March 23. The dance consisted of dancing, the crowning of the Varsity Queen, and sandwiches and drinks, following the crowning of the queen. The Varsity Club queen was Doris Quade, attended by Kryn Imhoff, Peggy Halter, and Cheryl Davenport. The final activity of the year for the Varsity Club was a banquet held April the 27th, 1954. This consisted of a very good meal followed by the presentation of letter certificates to the boys who had lettered for the past year of 1953-54, recognition of boys who had made honors in different sports and a short talk given by guest speaker, Lou Muegge, coach at Central High in Cape Girardeau. The closing of the banquet was the showing of athletic films. We feel the Varsity Club had a very successful year.
