The colors chosen by the class were maroon and silver, the class flower, the white rose, and our motto. Tonight We Launch, Where Shall We Anchor? At the Sikeston Cotton Carnival we were represented by Bobbie Smith. We were happy to see Betty Castleman crowned Halloween queen by Fred Lindy. After our last football game, Evelyn Sue Souders was crowned football queen with DeWayne Pfefferkorn and Norman Pobst as escorts. Valentine queen candidate, Imogene Westrich, was also elected and crowned by her escort, Ray Schwach. Helen Thornton was elected queen and Ronald Hooker king of the Mogul by the whole student body. The minds of the senior class have been centered on various activities in order to make money to sponsor our trip to the South. We sold Christmas cards, pencils, candy, cokes, house numbers, and hot dogs for this purpose. Dances were also given after football games. One of the prettiest and most enjoyable occasions was our Valentine Dance on February 14. We had a large crowd and a good orchestra. Everyone worked hard to make the evening a success. In April the seniors gave a 3-act play which was enjoyed by the cast and audience too. We closed our last days of Chaffee High with Baccalaureate services on May eleventh and Commencement exercises on May fifteenth to climax our four enjoyable years at Chaffee High School. In March, the class presented a play, Sure as You're Born, which was enjoyed by all. A large number of boys represented our class in football and basketball and are expected to make up the majority of the team next year. Four sophomores were initiated into the dramatic club and we are sure they will help it. Two camera club standouts were sophomores too. The band was boosted by a number of sophomores and we were very proud tb have five members of our class chosen for the Mogul staff. Sickness hit the sophomores hard and four members were hospitalized or operated on during the year. Sophomore queen candidate in the Halloween carnival was Patricia Castleman and Royce Cannon was her escort. Katherine Ancell was a queen candidate at the Cotton Carnival in Sikeston. Leona Obermann, escorted by John David Wetzel, represented us at the Valentine program. Honey as director was a very busy organi- zation this year, playing several concerts at the regular weekly school assemblies, furnish- ing music for school activities and taking part in concerts and parades in Cape Girardeau, Jackson, Sikeston, Illmo-Fornfelt, Oran, Parma, Marston, Portageville. One of the interesting events of the year was this band's program at the Southeast Missouri High School Band Association Fall Festival on October 25, 1951 at Jackson, Missouri. During this program a small balloon with a name and a request to report was released by each member of the band. There were ten letters received by members with reports telling where these balloons were found. The most distant report came from Ontario, Canada. Others came from the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Arkansas. At the State MMEA meeting at Cape Girardeau on January 11, 1952, where a one hundred piece band was organized as a Clinic band, the Chaffee Band was represented by Ronnie Dudley, clarinet; Leslie Lankford, tenor saxophone; Bob Kielhofner, alto saxophone and Bill Warner, trumpet. New instruments purchased by members of the band during the year: Leslie Lankford, tenor saxophone; Donald Heeb, trombone; Raymond Shackles, trumpet. Following is a list of members of the beginners class: Patty Gilmer, saxophone; Bill Cannon, Mark Hopkins, Wayne Crippen, Larry Smiley, Philip Gettings, Bill Gettings, mello- phones; John R. Limbaugh, Lynn Stubbs, John Wetzel and Sharon Williams, clarinets; Gerald Dame, baritone; Royce Cannon, saxophone; Tommy Gibbons, trombone; Pat Rushing, drums; Jack Hester, BBb bass; Billy Joe Pruitt, Dale Stringfellow, John Montgomery, Charles Pruitt, cor- nets. When these pass the test for membership into the band, the band will have a membership of forty-nine, the largest band in the history of the school. Several members of the band have appeared on the programs in feature numbers, Pa- tricia Castleman and Larry Himmelspoch in vocal numbers; Bill Warner, Jimmie Lynch, De- Wayne Pfefferkorn on the trumpet; Jae Hopkins, Ronnie Dudley and Patsy Pfefferkorn in clari- net numbers. Members of the Band not including the beginners class: clarinets, Ronnie Dud- ley, DeWayne Pfefferkorn, Jae Hopkins, Fred Thornton, Paul David Montgomery, and Kryn Imhoff; comets, Jimmie Lynch, Patsy Pfefferkorn, Bill Warner, David Kielhofner, Raymond Shackles and Lynn Papin; trombones, Donald Heeb and Richard Stephens; baritones, Jerre Castleman and James Cheek; saxophones, Bob Kielhofner, Leslie Lankford, Clyde Vessell, Morris Montgomery and Patricia Castleman; bells and drums, Larry Himmelspoch; drums, LaDonna Dobbs, Charles Hughes, Ronald Hooker, Joanne Fuller and Martha Peterman; bass, Donald Williams. Our chapter attended the sub-district meeting at Lutesville on No- vember 14. Patsy Pfefferkom had charge of the afternoon meeting. Leona Obermann and Helen Thornton were voting delegates. Betty Castleman, Helen Thornton, and Patsy Pfefferkom were delegates sent to plan the sub-district meet at Cape Girardeau, October 19, 1951. Some of the year's activities were: Baby sitting for P.T.A. members; the annual Christmas party in the Home Economics Department with a social program and exchange of gifts; we were happy to have five chapter mothers attend this party. Valentine tea served the members of P.T.A. and the Sen- ior Class; spring fashion show in April; square dance in February at which Daisy Mae of F.H.A. was crowned; pot luck supper in April for members and parents; tea for 8th grade girls in May. Several members attained their F.H.A. Degrees. The Girls' Glee Club, under the direction of Mrs. David Chaney, had a very eventful and successful year. In a high school assembly we presented a skit, 'T Love Little Willie. The actresses were Helen Thornton, Karen Hooker, Sybil Dolan, and Mary Margaret Hagan. The glee club furn- ished the background music. Along with the Boys’ Glee Club, to sing bass and tenor, we appeared in the Thanks- giving assembly to sing Holy, Holy, Holy, and We Thank Thee Now Our God, preceding Reverend Allison's address to the student body. The girls quartet, consisting of Patricia Castleman, Doris Quade, Betty Walker, and Ann Woodyard, sang Can't Yo' Hear Me Callin' Caroline, for the Frisco safety meeting held in October. Our most outstanding program of the year was the Christmas cantata, Chimes of the Holy Night. V e started work on it the first week of November and presented it December 20. There were several solos by Patricia Castleman, Kathryn Ancell, Shirley McKenzie, La Don- na Dobbs, and Ann Woodyard, also one duet by Betty Walker and Patricia Castleman. Another assembly was held in January when we were honored by Captain Jack Bur- nett as our speaker. The glee club sang two selections, The Orchestra Song and The Best Things in Life are Free. On April 25 we went to the Annual Music Festival at Cape Girardeau and sang under the direction of Mr. Maynard Klein, from the music department of the University of Michigan. We climaxed our year in May when we sang for Baccalaureate and Commencement, when once more we saw another group of young people as they passed another milestone. — 58 — Camera Club Clicking shutters and a steady stream of drying negatives and sparkling prints marked an unusually active and pleasant year for the lensmen of the school. The Black Key Dramatic Club started the year of 1951 52 with eight members left from 1949- 50. There were four juniors and four seniors. The juniors were Larry Himmelspoch, Von Haney, Naomi Harrell, and Mary Lou Bess; the seniors were Ronnie Dudley, Helen Thornton, Betty Castle- man, and Ann Woodyard. Our try-outs were held on three consecutive days and any high school student had the privi- lege of trying his talents before the old members and their sponsor Mrs. Mary Hopkins. There were various pantomines given and some jokes or tall tales. Of course everyone who tried could not be taken in, so the members voted for sixteen of the thirty-two. The ones who were selected by the majority vote were Phyllis Griffin, Jae Hopkins, Troy Dooley, Karen Hooker, Betty Walker, Ronald Hooker, DeWayne Pfefferkom, Bill Warner. Martha Dumey, Fred Thornton, Charles Hughes, Doris Quade, Joan Fuller, Marietta Mirly, Richard Stephens, and Noel Holt. SEPTEMBER: Vacation is over, we're glad. This school year started out with fun for all because we only regis- tered and didn't stay long. We started with thirty minute classes and the seniors chose their class sponsors. Mr. Kimbro and Mrs. Hopkins sure received a big shock, that isn't all, wait until the year is over. If you hear something that sounds like the school is falling, don't reach for the ceiling just find a nice hole to crawl in, it's only all high school classes going to meetings to organize — gee, they sure are in a hurry. We're from Chaffee, couldn’t be prouder. The Red Devils football season started today with our first game at Sikeston. They sure didn't feel sorry for us because after we traveled all the way down there they beat us to boot. We got soaked in the rain also. Guess who won! Yeah!! Great day for Chaffee! Hayti ven- tured up here for our second game of the sea- son, it was their third and we won. Sorry you lost Hayti but someone had to and we're cer- tainly glad it wasn't us. If you see some nuts running around with curlers in their hair, cream on their faces or the boys with short pant and license around their necks don't think we're all that way. No, it's only the green freshmen being taken through regular treatment of freshmen day. The pep squad is really starting with a bang this year. The new members were initiated at a bonfire and weiner roast. They sure had trouble getting a hair out of a horse's tail, someone's false teeth and a 1920 newspaper. You may not be- lieve this but one group came back with every- thing we sent them after. OCTOBER: A whole group of high school students were standing in front of the gym nervously wringing their hands. They weren't awaiting execution just waiting for their turn to try out for Black Key Dramatic Club. The classes all met to choose a queen candi- date for the Cotton Carnival to be held at Sikes- ton. Bobbie Smith, senior candidate, was elected from the four to represent Chaffee. The Halloween carnival came off with a big spooky!! We had witches, skeletons, and every other imaginable creature in the parade. The program, country store, and other means of mak- ing money for queens were all a great success. The senior queen, Betty Castleman, was crowned at the close of the evening by Fred Lindy. A wise choice the seniors think. Chaffee football team went to Portageville for another matching of brawn (but no brains) foot- ball that is. Needless to say what the final score was, we lost. If you see red, blue, and yellow spots before your eyes don't get excited it's only balloons from the number the band will perform at the Jackson festival. They had a band rehearsal for the school to see so they wouldn't be tempted to go the next day to Jackson. A gay bunch of our junior and senior high band members journeyed over to Jackson and it's a known fact that none of them came back with less than five aches all their own. There were some aches coming from the principal's office for those who decided they wanted to see Chaffee perform again at Jackson. They didn't really play hookey but kids you forgot — this isn't our vaca- tion time. In assembly on Columbus day Martha Peter- man, one of our freshmen, gave a talk about Columbus that was very entertaining. Martha pre- pared and delivered her speech and everyone en- joyed it. It is certainly surprising how much tal- ent we can find in our own student body. Another football game played here on our own field. Dexter was the victor over Chaffee but it wasn't our fault because we tried awfully hard. The final score was 14-13. We learned all about the ups and downs of va- cationing when Mrs. Homer Turner spoke to us in a morning assembly. She told us of her trip to Yellowstone National Park and other places. The ups were all the hills and mountains. She even threw snow-balls in June, doesn't that sound just like her? The month of October brought a great event, the Hollywood Theatre Guild presented the two plays ''The Crystal Slipper and Elizabeth and Essex. The high school children thought they were being slighted (or wanted to miss a class or two) and they wanted to see the play for the grade school too. Our last football game in the month of Octo- ber was played on St. Vincent's football field. Per- ry ille, Missouri. I guess we showed ourselves by tying them 0-0. The Chaffee team played a great game on both defense and offense. NOVEMBER: Hooray, no school! A big vacation. The teachers let the monkeys out then they went to the State Teachers' Convention, two whole days of no worry, no hurry. NO BOOKS. NO STUDY. We went down to Malden to view their foot- ball team and decided we would tackle the task of beating them but we judged wrong and they changed the score 6-6. As we hear the referees whistle blow we settle back for another thrilling game this time with Illmo-Fornfelt. This being our big home- coming game it meant very much for our team to win. We weren't disappointed, our score reigned over I-F 18-6. Then the special event we all look forward to — crowning the football queen. There were four candidates, the Freshmen—Kryn Imhoff, Sophomore—Doris Quade, Junior—Martha Dumey, and Senior—Evelyn Souders. The Senior queen, Evelyn, was crowned by Co-Captains, Norman Pobst and DeWayne Pfefferkorn. This was another Friday night which meant another football game. We had a game with East Prairie and were disappointed because we didn't beat them. The score at the end of the fourth quarter 0-0, (Chaffee's favor). Our last game of the season and in less than two weeks our basketball season starts so Chaffee athletes have work to do. Thanksgiving program was given, our glee clubs sang Holy Holy Holy and We Thank Thee Now Our God. Reverend Allison from — 69 — Remember When . . the Christian Church spoke to the assembly, every- one enjoyed it and it was a unanimous decision that we dismiss for two days. Everybody smile and look at the birdie, we're going to have our pictures taken!! Yes, the photo- grapher came today for individual pictures for our Mogul. Of all the primping and tying of ties, I have never seen the like. All the teachers like this because once in the year the girls dress up and the boys wear ties!? Imagine that, if you can. Great day, we had a conglomeration and guess what we did That's it, we selected the Mogul Staff. A bunch of happy people were go- ing around here after the names were posted. Our Editors, Don Hurt and Betty Castleman, two of our sophisticated seniors. There was one week set aside for National Education Week. This year we were honored to have Paul Ebaugh speak to us on American- ism or Communism, we don't need to tell you what all the students decided they would rather be. Grab your fellas' girls' it's Sadie Hawkins Day and all the girls ask the boys for dates this time. They have to pay the bills too. F. H. A. depart- ment sponsored this session and everyone enjoyed it very much. Patsy Pfefferkom and Ronnie Dud- ley had the lucky numbers and were chosen L'il Abner and Daisy Mae. DECEMBER: Hear that good music? That's the Chaffee High School getting ready to go to Cape for the Christmas Parade. Everything looks real Christ- masified. The glitter you remember was the gleam of the junior class rings. They sure were a happy bunch. The glee club presented Chimes of the Holy Night” and it was enjoyed very much. Several of the parents were present to hear the cantata. Mr. Buckstein had the annual Christmas films and candy as he always does. The students of public and parochial schools always look forward to this yearly event. The classes had their parties before Vacation started. All of them were enjoyed and Mr. God- dard, Junior Sponsor, especially enjoyed it. He received a baby rattler. Ask Mr. Kimbro, Senior Sponsor, why he picked up stones all day long. JANUARY: It's leap year girls, just thought I would in- form you! The basketball team went to Benton for the Tournament, let's not mention what hap- pened. Touchy subject. Seniors had class meeting to be measured for caps and gowns. What were those senior boys doing taking the girls' weight down — to see if they gain any in the years to come? Two new faculty members. One for Mrs. Blocker's place in the eighth grade, Mr. Sutton and the other for our commercial dept. Mrs. How- ard to take the place of Miss Bass. Grin, 'cause that man's here again . You know, for the group pictures. The Dysart Studio took our group pictures for organizations. It was a bright sunny day and perfect for pic-making. Seniors had another class meeting. The caps and gowns are to be Fifth Avenue Blue, class colors are maroon and silver, and the flower is the white ros9. Captain Jack Burnett who returned from Korea this month gave a talk on the people, country, and customs of that land. Also of the battles that were taking place. Glee club sang two special numbers. FEBRUARY: Who's nuts? Not us, it's only that Black Key Dramatic Club. They gave the play Bolts and Nuts, doesn't that sound nutty? It was about Re- becca Bolt turning her house into a mental sani- tarium and all the silly things that happened. We had a record breaking crowd and everyone enjoyed it very much. The seniors sponsored a valentine dance with an orchestra, the only one all year and it was a big success. This was one of the money making schemes for the trip in the spring. The Valentine queen was crowned. MARCH: Had a special assembly for St. Patrick's Day, sure looks green around here, everyone enjoyed it very much, there was a special speaker. The Sophomores presented their play Sure As You're Born, and it was enjoyed by everyone. APRIL: Two class plays were given this month, on© by the juniors and the other by the seniors. They were both a big success. Easter brings another special assembly and then that sacred time when we all remember that Christ arose from the dead to ascend into heaven and we had a reverent assembly as we recog- nized this time of year. The glee club attended the music festival at Cape Girardeau. We sang numerous selections in a mass concert. MAY: Guess you remember what May brought? Graduation for eighth grade and seniors. We sure will miss C.H.S. and all the memories that are there to remember. The eighth grade graduation was very attrac- tive as we see another class that makes their way into the ups and downs of high school days. Baccalaureate is a special time as it was this May! The class of '52 went through one of the two special procedures of graduating. Graduation finds 31 seniors as they march down C.H.S. aisles that last time as a student of high school. The stage was decorated by the juniors. Then the program, special speaker, and last but not least, diplomas. The seniors all looked bright and shining as they loaded the bus to tour the south. We have had a very enjoyable year and we'll see you again because we haven't left for good just be- cause we graduated. This is the end, I'm not going to say anymore, but here's wishing all the other classes in school as much good luck as the ones who have gone on before. Have fun — till we meet again next year. — 70 — COMPLIMENTS OF Chaffee Lumber Company Headquarters for all Kinds of Building Materials ORAN, MISSOURI CHAFFEE, MISSOURI PHONE 81 PHONE 3141 - 72 - HOWAHD-SWM ATHLETIC GOODS CO.
