Text from Pages 1 - 126 of the 1950 volume:

The Mogul 19SU Published by the Students of ChaFFbh High School CHAFFEE, MISSOURI Present ... A . . . At the events of the 1949-50 school year. All things of interest we have tried to picture in the following pages of this book. We, the members of the staff, hope that this volume of the Mogul will prove to be for the students of Chaffee High School a memory book worthy of the experiences of this year and a reminder of the real spirit of the school and of the part which they played in fostering that spirit. $ — 2 — □Rilicatinn Her complete impartiality toward her students, her patience with every-day problems, and her cooperation with every phase of school life have won for her the respect and admiration of all her students and associates. Her keen sense of humor and congenial leadership have en- deared her not only to the student body but to social and religious groups as well. To express our gratitude to her, the Mogul Staff proudly dedicates the 1950 Mogul to Mrs. Winnie Ozee. — 4 — Staff Editors Phyllis Gnann Peggy Shell Business Managers Betty Castleman Ronnie Dudley Art Editors Sherry Haupt Von Haney Literary Editors Mary Montgomery Renda Hooker Sports Editors Powell Keeney Harold Halbert Class Editors Barbara Mantel Shirley Lee Helen Thornton Geraldine Hickson Feature Editors Bill Warner Donald Hurt Typists Winifred Summers Phyllis Rhodes Phyllis Hubbard Patsy Lee Halter Betty Davenport Advertising Managers Audrey • Grossheider Geraldine Holt Robert Seyer Johny Heeb Photography The Dysart Studio Sikeston, Mo. FRED LEW ALLEN Superintendent It affords me a great deal of pleasure to congratulate the 1950 Mogul Staff, for a task so well organized and worked out with so much harmony between all committees. Your work has reminded me that everything is according to the law of compensation which is immutable and can never be evaded or cheated. May I say to the students of Chaffee High, Whatsoever ye mete out shall be measured to you again . This has been proven in the lives of all men. Thus do we hold our lives and our destinies in our own hands. We can give our best to the world — our best in service, in love, in kindness and devotion, in honesty and faithful- ness, in inspiration and beauty, our best in all endeavors — and back to us will come unerringly the highest good, the greatest joy, the best that life can offer. — 10 — ZETA DUNN High School Principal It is with pride that I scan the pages of the 1950 Mogul for it portrays in picture and word the true spirit of the pupils of Chaffee High School. May you approach the tasks of life with the same interest, enthu- siam, willingness to serve and untir- ing efforts as you have shown in editing this book. tJ My thoughts are often with the High School Pupils as you continue through your classes. I am confident that in the future you will have many happy memories of your school days. My sincerest congratulations to the Seniors of 1949-50. — 11 — MRS. We have tread the hall of Chaffee High School since 1943, when we were seventh graders. Our class colors are gray and scarlet, our flower is a scar- let carnation, and our motto is The stars are too low to be set as our goal. We have had several queens from our class. They are: Oran Homecoming, Sue Redfern; Mogul, Maxine Finch; Daisy Mae of F. H. A., Betty Camp; Football Queen, Phyllis Gnann, and Valentine, Winifred Summers. We have worked this year for money for a trip down south. Football and basketball pencils, stationery, and Christmas cards were sold. We had refreshment stands at the basketball and foot- ball games. We gave a dance at the opening football game and one at the last game in honor of the team. In December we gave two one act plays, Eh! and Sis O' The Ozarks. We sponsored the Dramatic Club play, Dear Papa, in February. A .moving picture show was given in March, and a three act play ip April. 'i We hope the seniors of the future will have as much fun in school as we have had. — 21 — nliii|i;i|ilis 3uizd6d i or,3D;oqos joiunf jo ao:ss:uiiod Xq paiuijdey t DlJSETOipC JOlUtl [' Juniors President_________ Vice-President___ Secretary_________ Treasurer--------- Photographer______ Sergeant at Arms Reporter_________ Sponsor __________ CLASS OFFICERS John Dale Heeb Lyndell Hooker _ Peggy Shell Norval Sadler _____Tom Heeb ______John Biler _ Geraldine Holt Mr. Goddard — 24 — Juninrs GLENN AMELUNKE MARY FRANCES AMELUNKE a'A boy of few words Very Friendly Glee Club F. All were very proud to have Mrs. Hopkins as our sponsor. The highlight of the year for us was winning the Halloween contest. It was a hard enarned success to see our candidate, Evelyn Souders, crowned Halloween queen of C. H. S. by her escort Jack Hawkins. Our other queen candidates were Bobby Smith, F. H. A., with John Statler escort, and Lucille Rowan, Valentine. They all made a good showing for the class. Freshman day was quite an event this year and we all got a kick out of having the freshmen kneeling at our feet. Every one of us enjoyed the party we gave them and the one they gave us in return. Other parties we had during the year were: Christmas party, at which we exchanged gifts; wiener roast; and the picnic at the last of the year. Our class was well represented with six of its members on the Mogul Staff. There were also a great num- ber of our boys on the football and basketball teams. The band was asked to play for a concert at Oran, Missouri on September 30, 1949 and marched in the Portageville Festival the evening of October 13, 1949. It was on the Portage- ville trip that the band stopped in Sikeston long enough to serenade General Ralph E. Truman who for several years had been Commanding General of the 35th Division. Our band was notified by Col. Harry E. Dudley that the General was in Sikeston that day, and it was a pleasure to have had the privilege of surprising the General with a parade and concert in his honor. General Truman is a cousin of President Harry S. Truman. Other celebrations and parades in which the band played were the Labor Day Parade at Cape Girardeau, Halloween Parade at Chaffee, the Methodist Church, Christmas Parade at Cape Girardeau, and two Christmas programs at the high school gymnasium. Patsy Halter was our candidate for state re- porter. A square dance was held in the High School Gymnasium, November 22, 1949 with the crowning of the annual bam dance queen. Betty Camp, the senior candidate, was crowned Daisy Mae of F. H. A. The annual Christmas party was held with a social program and the exchanging of gifts. A talk was given by a college student enrolled in home economics. A valentine tea was served to members of the Parent-Teacher Association and members of the senior class. The chapter sent delegates to the state meeting held at the university campus at Columbia, Missouri in the spring of 1950. Several members attained degrees in the F. H. A. organization. A farewell party was given at the close of school. With seven of the 1948 co-champion regulars gone due to graduation, the Red Devil eleven, that met an outstanding Sikesfon team for the first game of the season, came up with some new faces and two last year's regulars in new positions. John Biler, a guard of last year, was shifted to full back; Lyndell Hooker, a sub- stitute tackle last year, was shifted to right end; and David Pepple, a newcomer at center, teamed up with last year's substitute center, Dwain Glenzy. Bob Jones at left half back, a senior, came out for football last year after transferring from St. Mary's. Although, inexperienced in some positions, the line anchored by two fine tackles, Ray- mond Ballard and Bob Hampton, had enough weight to offset a light back field. After losing the opener to Sikeston, Champions of the Big 8, who incidentally was scored upon only 3 times, one of those by the Red Devils, Chaffee tied Hayti 12 to 12 with one minute and a half of game time remaining but failed on the conversion for the extra point. Bob Jones starred in that game with both touchdowns on long runs. The Dexter game was a heart breaker for the Red Devils being on the short end of a 13 to 7 score after out gaining and passing the Bear Cats the last half. A fumble on the one foot line climaxed a 20 yard run by Bob Jones with less than two minutes re- maining and took away the Red Devils' chance for a tie or win. Quarter back Powell Keeney stood out with his fine spot passing as did half back Harold Halbert, who was on the receiving end of most of Keeney's passes. Following the Dexter battle the Red Devils journeyed to Fredericktown to lose 12 to 6 on a muddy field which became a nightmare as the Red and Black of Chaffee High suffered 150 yards via penalties. After an open date following the Fredericktown scrimmage, which saw the Red Devils working hard to bolster their morale, they showed their fighting spirit by taking the next three games from Risco, who hadn't lost a game up to that time, Malden, and Illmo-Fomfelt. Bob Hart a guard did a good job against Malden at tackle when Bob Hampton regular tackle was taken sick on the day of the game. Chaffee felt the loss greatly when Powell Keeney, quarter back who suffered a shoulder injury in practice before the Malden game, was lost the rest of the season. The same applied for left guard Bill Surman, who suffered an injury in the Illmo-Fomfelt game and was lost for the remaining game with East Prairie. After leading throughout that game by the narrow margin of 7 to 6, the Red Devils lost the service of left guard Joe Wilkinson at the start of the third quarter due to a sprain- ed ankle, which was a contributing factor in the victory gained by a small, but fighting, East Prairie team in the last five minutes of the game closing the season. The play of tackles Bob Hampton and Ray Ballard, the latter nursing a shoulder injury all season, the hard running of full-back Johnny Biler and half-backs Harold Halbert and Bob Jones, the passing of quarter-back Powell Keeney, plus the ability of Joe Proctor to play well every position in the back field, taking Keeney's place at quarter-back after the latter was injured, was encouraging as the Chaffee Red Devils of 1949 took 3rd place in the Little 8 conference. We appreciate very much our coach, Mr. Alvis, for the interest he has shown in us. The team will lose thirteen men: Revelle, Ballard, Surman, Pepple, Glenzy, Wilkin- son, Hampton, Jones, Dowd, Wachter, Proctor, Keeney, and Halbert. — 74 — IONES WACHTER KEENEY LINDY HAWKINS HOOKER Basketball The Red Devils, averaging around 5' 9 as a team, were badly handi- capped by their lack of height, and had a pretty rough go on the basketball court. But under the direction of Dwight S. Alvis they showed a lot of hustle and fight and very good sportsmanship. Due to graduation the team will lose Powell Keeney, Harold Halbert, John Burnett, Bob Jones, H. A. Watcher, and Dwain Glenzy. Keeney was high scorer for the year, averaging 15 points per game.
