Seniors Eleven years ago we started upon our long and studious journey in several different schools; some joining us along our way and others dropping out; but finally we got through the sixth grade ready for junior high, and were we grown up now! The days in junior high went by so fast that almost before we knew it we were freshmen in high school. Now three more years have passed and we are seniors, 33 of us started out last year under the leadership of Mr. Goddard and Mrs. Hampton eager to begin raising money for our trip at the end of the year. But along the way we lost one of our members, Ezra Harrell, leaving 32 of us to work together. We chose as our motto: Make the Best Better,” and as our class colors Red and White with a Red Rose as our class flower. For our queen candidates during the year we chose for Halloween, Nadine Law- son; for Daisy Mae of F. H. A., Mildred Crumbaugh; and for Home Coming at Oran, Maxine Shell. We were very glad to have three of our girls as queens this year. They were Valentine Queen, Leevada Mier; Football Queen, Maxine Shell; and Mogul Queen, Leevada Mier. The first class activity of the year was a Christmas party and exchanging of gifts, at which everyone had an enjoyable time. Another party was given by the losing teams in a contest that was had during the year, which was also a success. In March the class presented a play Whose Little Bride Are You?” The cast was: Doctor Bellows, Frank Russell; Augustus May, Robert Hanna; Simeon Singleton, Cecil Harris; A'gcrnon Clawhammer, Wylie Heltibrand; George Tobin, Harrell Rushing; Florence Bellows, Shirley Jones; Mrs. MacEckron, Anna Mae Miller; Dolly MacEckron, Mary Helen Monroe; Mrs. Tobin, Mary Kathryn Langston; and Maggie Brady, Betty Jo Margrabe. A number of our senior boys were on the football and basketball teams. Those that went out for Football were: Richard Bailey, Wylie Heltibrand, Ezra Harrell, Frank Russell, Don Shecley, Bob Hanna, Billy Ray Bisplinghoff, and Bill Williams. Two senior boys were chosen for the Little Eight all star team. They were: Rich- ard Bailey, End; and Frank Russell, left half. Wylie Heltibrand, center, and Ezra Har- rell, end, were picked for the all star second team. Robert Hanna had honorable mention. Cecil Harris, Ralph Drissell, Bill Williams, and Billy Ray Bisplinghoff were on the basketba'l team. To raise the necessary fund for our trip we made and sold sandwiches, cakes, pies, had refreshment stands at ball games, sold pencils, pins, fountain pens, sponsored dances after ball games, a box supper, and one of our largest events was the Valentine Dance. We closed the last year of high school with Baccalaureate on May 8, Class Night on May 10, Commencement on May 13, and a trip to New Orleans May 15 to 21. We were sorry to have to leave dear old Chaffee High. Best wishes to all our teachers and underclassmen — all the good luck possible. — 18 — Juniors ft 1-av v«nport Yi-T : t- 4 V ., ■f A v , •:| V mUMirWM jfflFj:.; v y .s%; Juniors President Vice-President Secretary ....... Junior Class Thirty-eight jolly, jog-along students suppported the jun- ior class roll this year with two very capable sponsors, Mr. Wcs- sell and Mrs. Hopkins. The class was overwhelmed to see two of our misses crowned queens. Phyllis Rhodes was crowned Halloween Queen by John Burnett; Phyllis Gnann was crowned Daisy May of F. H. A.” at the Fall Barn Dance by Powell Keeney. Other candidates for queens were: Sue Rcdfern as homecoming queen at Oran and Max- ine Finch for the Valentine Dance. Parties include a Christmas party with the exchanging of gifts, a skating party, and a picnic. Two one-act plays were presented to raise funds for activi- ties of the class. Our class was well represented on the football team. Six of the boys were on the Red Devils’ first string, plus six other boys who participated in the sport. The boys receiving well earned letters were: Raymond Ballard, Billy Surman, Bob Hampt- ton, Lloyd Haupt, Harold Halbert, and Powell Keeney. Eight boys participated in basketball. Joe Proctor The Black Key Dramatic Club, sponsored by Mrs. Hopkins, started this year’s work with the annual initia- tion for the new members which was held the first month of school. The initiation was given in the high school gym in the presence of the student body. The setting was an employment agency, and the new members had to demonstrate their ability to fill different positions such as hill-billy singers, camping companions, athletes, teach- ers, drum majors, etc. Because of all the other activities the club was not able to begin practicing for a play until after Christ- mas. The name of the play chosen was Miss Smarty,” which showed something of the every day life at college. The characters were as follows: Janice Burbank, Sue Redfern; Professor Erasmas Evcrfield, Tom Heeb; Pleasant Hickey, Phyllis Gnann; Lizbcth Smart, Mary Helen Monroe; Shelly Smart, Bob Hart; Brant Robston, Joe Proc- tor; Morton Gordon, Billy Ray Bisplinghoff; Swifty Trent, Ronnie Dudley; Virginia Sterns, June Schultz; Dodie Balmer, Nadine Lawson; Helene Westfield, Renda Hooker; and Ilka Crawley, Mary Montgomery. — 56 — Band Front row: Billy Ray Bisplinghoff, Ronald Hooker. The Chaffee High School Band for the school year 1948-’49 was much improved over previous years. Following is the list showing the officers and members of the band: Frank Russell, President; Joe Proctor, Vice president; Dorothy McKenzie, Secre- tary and treasurer; Members of Executive board in addition to the above officers, Noel Holt and Phyllis Hubbard, other members — Marilyn Casebolt, Barbara Mantel, Ronnie Dudley, Wylie Heltibrand, Bobby Nelson, Billy Warner, Rex Williams, Milfred Crumbaugh, Dewayne Pfefferkorn, Jerre Castleman, Ger- aldine Holt, Johnnie Rosenquist, John Dale Heeb, Ronald Hooker, Renda Hooker, Billy Bisplinghoff, Ann Woodyard, J. Roundup and Parade at Cape Girardeau in October, marching in a parade at Cairo, 111, on Nov. 11, 1948, the day the Cairo bridge was made free to the public, playing in the big Christmas Parade at Cape Girardeau on December 9, 1948, furnishing music for the Frisco Safety program on January 13, and pre- senting a concert for the P. T. A. on January 10. The most important event of the year was when the World Famous Bandmaster and Composer of Band music, Karl L. King, visited Chaffee and was Guest Conductor at a Band Concert given at the High School Gymnasium on Oct. 19, 1948. This was a chance in a lifetime for the members of our band. They will not soon forget the privilege they had of playing in a band under the baton of such a noted bandmaster. Some of the members of the Jackson High School Band, and other Southeast Missouri School Bands, took part in this concert. The Chaffee High School Band is a member of the Southeast Missouri High School Band Association, and attended the Summer Band Festival at Poplar Bluff, Mo., the Fall Marching Band Festival at Jackson, Mo. on October 19th, and the Spring Festival at Perryville, Missouri on March 17, 1949. Oscar T. Honey is Director; Phyllis Rhodes, Drum Major; Sue Redfern and Peggy Childs, Majorettes. The band also has a corps of twirlers that march with the band in all parades; the members are: Bonnie Grossheider, Gladsy Haupt, Bonnie Mantel, Patricia Castleman, Alice Goin, LaDonna Dobbs, Dorothy Niswonger, Shirley Lemonds, Kryn Imhoff, Patsy Rushing, Martha Peterman, Dorothy Baker, Kathryn Ancell, Glenda Green, and Glenda Gately. — 59 — Camera Club Left to right: Don Check, Charles Hughes, Donald Hurt, Tommy Hceb, DeWayne Pfefferkorn, Kathryn Scrog- gins, Nancy Ebbs, Helen Walton, and sponsor, Charles A. Goddard. Officers: Tommy Heeb, president; Billy Warner, vice-president; Betty Davenport, secretary; DeWayne Pfefferkorn, treasurer; Betty Dunlap, reporter. Other members: Charles Hughes, Donald Hurt, Arthur Seyer, Kathryn Scroggins, Nancy Ebbs, Don Cheek, Helen Walton, Wylie Heltibrand, Donna Denton, and Bill Williams. Club objectives set for the year were: 1. To secure more knowledge of how to take good pictures, develop, and make contact and projection prints. 2. To add an enlarger to the school darkroom. 3. To provide a picture record of school events. Tommy Heeb and Billy Warner were selected as the two students of Southeast Missouri to demonstrate school photography at the district teachers’ convention held at the State Col- lege of Cape Girardeau. So interesting was their part of the program that for thirty minutes after the demonstration ended many science teachers examined equipment and asked questions. The club takes great pride in its contribution to this Mogul of the many snapshots members have taken during the school year. — 60 — Devils’ Tales STAFF Editor ............................................ Homes where truth and love and security and faith will be realities not dreams We are the Future Homemakers of America We face the future with warm courage and high hope. Fifty girls of the Chaffee Chapter of FHA met early in September to brighten the year with many activities. For two years Mrs. Forrest Finch has served as chapter mother, chosen by the members. Miss McLane was our chapter advisor, advisor for Southeast Missouri, and on Advisory Board for the State of Missouri. We arc very happy to have June Schultz serve as vice-president of the state the past year and to have Sue Redfern, sub-district song leader. Winifred Summers was elected to serve as secretary-treasurer of the sub-district for this year. Memories of the year’s activities were: The observance of National FHA week. This included attending the sub-district meet- ing at Oran and initiating twenty new members with a panel discussion in a school assembly. The Fall Barn Dance on November 9th which proved a big success. Phyllis Gnann was crowned Daisy Mac of FHA’’ at this dance. The annual Christmas Party was held in the Home Economics Department with the ex- change of gifts. The selling of greeting cards, stationery, and wrapping paper to raise funds for the activi- ties of FHA. A talk given by a State College student of Cape Girardeau. Demonstration on the making of candy and on the making of lamp shades. Sending a box of supplies to an adopted German School. A pot-luck luncheon. Serving the Valentine Tea to PTA and Senior Class. Entertaining another FHA Chapter in March carrying out a St. Patrick theme. An education trip, a spring fashion show, and a farewell party. Serving Xmas Banquet for Rotary Club. Our delegate to the National Convention in 1948 at Kansas City was Shirley Jones. Dele- gates were also sent to the district meeting at Cape Girardeau and the state meeting in the spring of 1949. The only three girls to meet the requirements to achieve the second degree, Chapter Homemaker were Shirley Jones, Phyllis Rhodes, and Audrey Grossheider. A number of other girls attained their first degree, which is the Junior Homemaker. To our chapter advisor, our chapter mother, our teachers, and friends, we are most thankful for leading our organization Onward toward new horizons.” — 63 — Parent Teachers’ Association President.............
