Miss Cook supervised them. This club is composed of girls in the first and second year Home Economics classes and those who have completed the course. The purpose of the Home Economics Club is to interest the girls in different fields, such as social functions. This was forwarded by the banquet that was given the faculty members. Several members of the club participated. Meetings were held on every other Thursday, and programs of interest and entertainment were given. — 24 —

The debate year was started out by the following members: Marnett Scott, Clarence Daugh- erty, Fern Washer, Betty Metz, Mary Jean Slaughter. Peggy Spencer, Ruth Foulk, Mary Anna Bisplinghoff, Mary Anna Heeb. The Forum Club was organized with Clarence Daugherty. Speaker; Mary Jean Slaughter, Vice-Speaker; Betty Metz, Scribe; Mary Anna Bisplinghoff. Sergeant-at-Arms; and Marnett Scott as Librarian. The question for debate this year was: Resolved: That the Federal Government should own and operate the Railroads of the United States. Many exchange debates with other schools were enjoyed. At the Jackson Tournament Chaffee tied for third, but at the Sikeston Tournament Chaffee came out with the first place ribbon. Marnett Scott, Peggy Spencer, Betty Metz, and Clarence Daughertty upheld the Affirmative side and Mary Anna Heeb, Mary Jean Slaughter, Mary Anna Bisplinghoff, and Fern Washer upheld the Negative side. They also gave a debate for the Rotary Club in exchange for a luncheon. Then came the final and big tournament for Southeast Missouri debate teams to test their skill. At the noon recess Chaffee and the Sikeston teams were tied for first place. At the after- noon debates, between Chaffee and Sikeston, Chaffee lost to Sikeston by one decision. As spectators, not contestants, the Debate squad went to Columbia on April 5, 1940, to attend the state debate tournament. While on the trip, such interesting spots as Jefferson City, St. Louis, Columbia, and many other interesting places, were visited. Miss Eileen Smith was adopted as an honorary member of the debate squad and she. and Mr. and Mrs. LaVal accompanied the debate squad on a trip to Columbia. — 23 — 19 40
