Our class won top honors Halloween by crowning our candidate, Maurine Lett, queen. In December, most of the Seniors enjoyed a skating party at the Trio Rink at Ancell. Also in December we felt the loss of a very dear classmate, Jack Burnett, our treasurer, who quit school to work at Kroger's. On March 15, the class produced the play, Spring Fever. Our play drew the largest crowd for a play that has ever been in our gymnasium. The Senior Class has been quite distinguished this year by the mem- bers who have acquired fame for it. Ruth Foulk, Fern Washer, Mary Anna Bisplinghoff, Peggy Spencer, Clarence Daugherty, and Marnett Scott repre- sented us on the Debate squad. All these students went on the trip the De- bate Squad took to Columbia, April 5. Those representing us at the High School Meet at Cape, April 20, were Virginia Hurt, grammar; Peggy Spencer, extemporaneous speaking; Evelyn Ferguson, 2nd year typing and shorthand; and Mary Anna Bisplinghoff, American History. In May, the Seniors had Hobo Day; at the close of school, we were very royally entertained by the Juniors with a banquet and a boat excursion. — 9 — M o gul BILL BAGBEY Drama Club, Basketball, Track, C Club, Mo- gul Staff. Our candidate, Mary Anna Heeb, placed a close sec- ond in the Queen contest. We also presented a skit of The Women which was enjoyed by all who attended. In the spring carnival, Kathleen Rowark represented us in the queen contest. As our candidate for the Mogul Queen we chose Betty Metz. We presented Be Home by Midnight and Melody Roundup as our contribution to the carnival. The Junior Class was well represented in every extra-cur- ricular activity this year — football, basketball, dramatics, debate, glee club and track. JUNIOR-SENIOR BANQUET The Junior-Senior Banquet was held in the high school gym- nasium, May 10, with the setting being laid in the Candlelight Night Club. Skipper Barron and his orchestra furnished the music and program. Jessie Layne was Master of Ceremonies, and Charles Cunningham was Head Waiter. The banquet was served by the Sophomore girls. Speeches were made by Stirling Boyts, Senior President; John Freeze, Junior President; and Bill Bagbey. The Juniors also entertained the Seniors with a boat excur- sion May 6, on the Steamer Capitol. — 12 — M o g u SOPHOMORES Sitting, left to right G. W. THOMPSON and MISS GOLDEN FRESHMEN ACTIVITIES On September 4, 1939, a group of scared looking youngsters trudged up the stairs to study hall to enroll for a new school year. They were the Freshmen of 1939-40. We were determined not to be stumped by anything, not even algebra and high school English. It was October 7, before we finally became full-fledged high school students. On that day the Sophomores took matters in their own hands and decided to initiate us into the great high school family. A great time was had by both classes on Freshman Day. At the end of the day, we, the Freshmen, considered ourselves at least a little branch on the large tree, Central Hiah School. Our candidate for queen at the Halloween Carnival was Shirley Denton. We were very disappointed when she was not chosen as Halloween Queen. At the end of our first year as high school students, we look back and say, Well, we have held our own anyway. Although some of our students have dropped, we have gained some new ones. Next year we hope to see all of our classmates join in the Sophomores of 1940-41. In our last Freshman statement, we want to wish the parting Seniors all the luck that they can possibly have in their coming years. — 14 — M o g u I Sitting Down — Elmer Perry, Jackson Loucks, Bill Ward, John Hale. We members are very proud to be the first Mogul Staff for this new style of year book. Only by the cooperation of the Mogul Staff, the student body, and the faculty have we been able to publish this annual successfully. We sincerely hope that this product of effort will be greatly treasured by all the students of Chaffee High. The High School Band has been a regular feature at all football and basketball games and various other activities held in the gymnasium through- out the year. At the beginning of the year, the band consisted of fourteen members, but at the close of the season it had increased to twenty-one members. Dur- ing the year the band was very sorry to lose two of its oldest members: Bob Rosenquist and John Kenneth Hale. The director of the band is Mr. Arthur Clark. Allie B. Lankford is the drum major. As she is a member of the graduating class, a new one will be selected for next year. During the year they have been working on the following compositions: Witch of Endor by R. E. Hildreth; Pomp and Chivalry by Roberts; Sas- katchewan by Holmes; The Oracle by Taylor; Finlandia by Sibelius; Hul- digungsmarsch by Grieg; Andante Cantabile by Tschaikowsky (Symphony No. 5); Rhythmoods” arranged by Paul Yoder, and The Trojan Prince by Holmes. It was carried on in an entirely different fashion from last year. Miss Pointer thought that it would be a good idea to have the Eighth Grade Girls enroll so they could be practicing for the next year. This idea was met with great success. Thirty-four girls enrolled. This was one of the largest glee clubs the school has ever had. They sang at several programs throughout the year. One of their most popular selections was Morning . The Pep Squad seemed to take a major part in the activities of Good Old Chaffee High this year. Its members wore black skirts and red jackets. The cheer leaders wore white skirts and white cardigan sweaters. A pep rally was held in study hall just before the Jackson game and everyone seemed to have lots of pep and interest. Coach Smith introduced the players, gave their weight and their positions. A few of the players gave their ideas on the Jackson game. The next pep rally was the most spectacular. Everyone met by the stop light, and led by the band, a procession formed, which paraded to the football field where there were yells, songs, and several speeches. All in all, the pep squad has had a successful year. We want to thank every person for their cooperation and hope for another successful year. 19 40 — 22 — DEBATE SQUAD Front Row Margaret Ann Scott, Fern Washer, Ruth Foulk, Clarence Daugherty. The question for debate this year was: Resolved: That the Federal Government should own and operate the Railroads of the United States. Many exchange debates with other schools were enjoyed. At the Jackson Tournament Chaffee tied for third, but at the Sikeston Tournament Chaffee came out with the first place ribbon. Marnett Scott, Peggy Spencer, Betty Metz, and Clarence Daughertty upheld the Affirmative side and Mary Anna Heeb, Mary Jean Slaughter, Mary Anna Bisplinghoff, and Fern Washer upheld the Negative side. They also gave a debate for the Rotary Club in exchange for a luncheon. Then came the final and big tournament for Southeast Missouri debate teams to test their skill. At the noon recess Chaffee and the Sikeston teams were tied for first place. At the after- noon debates, between Chaffee and Sikeston, Chaffee lost to Sikeston by one decision. As spectators, not contestants, the Debate squad went to Columbia on April 5, 1940, to attend the state debate tournament. While on the trip, such interesting spots as Jefferson City, St. Louis, Columbia, and many other interesting places, were visited. Miss Eileen Smith was adopted as an honorary member of the debate squad and she. and Mr. and Mrs. LaVal accompanied the debate squad on a trip to Columbia. — 23 — 19 40 HOMEMAKERS 19 40 Front Row, sitting, left to right Marion Keller, Juanita Bullock, Erma Lee Hurt, Pansy Knowlton, Mary Alice Daugherty, Marjorie Johnson, Elizabeth Felden, Leanna Dumey, Vivian Jennings.
