Later it became a social sorority and is the oldest one on the campus. The character of Qlice Freeman Palmer was not forgotten, however, as the organization in- creased in membership and activity. She still remains the ideal and inspiration ot every girl in the sorority. Hloha Phi Pi members are chosen carefully on the basis of scholarship and character. lts purpose is to foster a spirit of fellowship and loyalty among the members and to work hand in hand with others for the welfare of the en- tire college. lmoortant social events during the year are the Christmas informal banquet and dance and the spring formal, and the Mother's Day Tea in the spring. Miss Vey Thomas, president of the sorority, was chosen 1940 Gridiron Queen. Miss Marion Gierau, who has been treasurer of the sorority tor two years, was honored this year by being presented as the Blue Key Sweetheart. Miss Lorraine Cleveland, now an alumni of Hlpha Phi Pi was the 1940 May Queen. The sorority won the inter-sorority sing which was the high-light of the 1.940 Ivy Day activities. By 1940 a 45 passenger bus, an 8 passenger Station Wagon, and a large combination kitchen and luggage truck had been acquired. The growth of the Tour has been made pos- sible only through the cooperation of the Col- lege Qdministration, the faculty and especially that of past participants. lt has been the desire ot the tour to remain entirely scientific. Methods have been devel- oped whereby students measure objectively phenomena ot scientific interest along the way.
