The cooperation between the faculty and the student body in achieving this aim results in lite that is peculiar to an educa- tional institution, a life that is a composite of earnest endeavor in study and healthful indulgence in social activity. This lite as ot the school year l938-1939 has been placed between the two covers of this volume and has been entitled the 1939 HNOKHSHN. This publication in later years shall refresh on a taint memory the picture of this developmental period and the ideals, habits, and appreciations which characterized these days. EOGX4 THE EXEQT These professional ideals, as has been said, result from a program of earnest study and social activity. Upon each ot these factors is based a section of the 1939 HNOKHSHN. The first, entitled We Live to Leam, presents Our Teachers, without whom a program of study would not be possible, and Our Classes, the other phase of the cooperative endeavor of the EGOX4 THE SEQQND The second section, entitled We Learn to Live. presents Our Societies, the various social, professional, and honorary organ- izations, Our Flthletics, the heroes of the gridiron and of the basketball court and the Women who proved that they were not the weaker of the sexes, and Our Lite, the milestones in a year of college life. l D I i 1 lCAllOlXI In recognition not only ot his otcctdernic spirit in Chctdron State Tecfchers College, but cxlso ol his state-wide reputcl- tion for his successful efforts to bring to the notice of the notion the eorly history ot Western Neforosko, We dedicate this volume oi the HNOKHSHN to E. P. Wilson. BOOK THE WRST These professional ideals, as has been said, result from a program of earnest study and social activity. Upon each ot these factors is based a section of the l939 HNOKHSHN. Each year the Guild conducts a variety of activities designed to stimulate and encourage the in- terests ot industrial arts and industrial arts edu- cation. ln the Spring an industrial arts fair creates a great deal of interest among the students and townspeople. The Guild publishes a bi-monthly magazine, called the Hrtisan, which is sent to all active, alumni, cmd honorary members of the organization. Early in the year the Guild made an educational trip to Rapid City where they visited the Warren-Lamb Lumber Co., the Tri- State Milling Co., the Black Hills Broadcasting Co., the Public School and Dinosaur Park. The enrollment at that time was forty-three. The work was offered as a cultural activity, with credit, and without definite thought of extended concertizing. That feature came later, and was the result of the spirited bearing and singing ability that has characterized all of our singing units since that time. This activity is now in its seventh year and the present organization can be recognized, in some respects, as superior to any of its predecessors and, in no way, inferior to any of them. Hside from the regular routine of rehearsals, which ex- tends throughout the entire college year, the general program includes the usual visits to neighboring cities in the college area and the annual trek to Denver to broadcast from the N. B. C. studios there. This latter covered the period from Thurs- day, May 4th, to Monday, May 8th. Pill indications warrant the assumption that the chorus will attain its highest artistic performance to date. The enrollment is seventy-six. Our responses have been so gracious that we are assured of an early filling ot the quota for 1939. Highlighting the plans for the season are the five days at the World's Fair and Exposition at San Fran- cisco. H day will be dedicated to NeIoraska's Teachers College at Chadron. The Tour group Will be the nucleus of events that day. We extend our appreciation to the administration, faculty and students of the college for aiding us in our efforts at this venture. PURSE SEINING IN THE STRAITS OF IUAN DE FUCA ON THE AMERICAN SIDE OF THE INTERNATIONAL BOUNDARY From the Governor's yacht the class Watches the processes involved in one of the world's large industries, salmon fishing, in the Straits of Iuan de Fuca. The net, 2,500 feet long and 25 feet deep, is stretched out in the form of a purse and drawn in by a power boat, often capturing many tons of the finest Royal Chinook Salmon. Students were to learn later how good these fish were when prepared by the yacht's steward. SNOWBALI. Hfter a ten-day layoff, they resumed play against the Spearfish Yellow Iackets on the local floor with a double victory. The following week the Eagles traveled to Denver and played a double header with St. Regis college. Running into unexpected strength, the Chadronites lost both games. Then at Spearfish the following week-end, the Eagles hum- bled the Yellow lackets in the first of a two-game series with comparative ease, and then had to push all the way in the second encounter to eke out a narow margined victory. With the early season games over, the Eagles bounced into the thick of a difficult cage campaign with a double victory over the Kearney Plntelopes. Next in order, the West- ern State Mountaineers came to Chadron only to lose the first game to the locals 48 to 41 in a thrilling over-time con- test. In the second game of this series, the Westerners turned on the heat and downed the Eagles before the largest crowd of the season to witness a contest on the local court. Follow- ing this series, Chadron made a disastrous trip to Wayne, losing two games, then returned home to win a pair from the lrlardrockers of Rapid City. With a week's lay-off, the Eagles met and twice defeated a fine team of Colorado Miners from Golden. The following week presented what appeared, on paper, to be na lost cause in that the locals were to take on the highly touted Rocky Mountain champions from Greeley. ln the first game of the series, Greeley pulled away in the last quarter to win, but, on the second night, the Eagles accomplished I3-'ll BASKETBALL PLHNRNSKY, CCC HOPPER, CC Q HooD,c what the followers least expected and led the Bears all the FLOYD.
