'eaAon Chadron Prep's 19 -9 foot'ball team finished the second straight unde- feated seeson with only a tie to mar the record. After losing 9 regulars end many valuable replacements from the previous year, the 1949 team upset the predictions by attaining second place in the Northwest Nebraska Con- ference. The season opened with a surprise victory over a heavy Igloo teem, outweighing the Preps 20 pounds per man. Danny Kuska intercepted a pass in the final 30 seconds, with the score tied, and sprinted 30 yards for a touchdown, giving the Preps a 27-20 victory. The next week Hemingford was host to the local Preus and after leading 13—0 at half-time, fell to the local Prep team 14—13. The Alliance Reserves furnished the first opposition on the home field and were soundly beaten 46—6. St. Pat's of Sidney journeyed to Chadron the following week but were edged 13-6 after scoring the initial tally. The next week an inspired Rushville team kept the sluggish Preps to a 0-0 tie. The Junior Eagles almost scored several times but could never quite acconrolish this feat. The Prep eleven played their best against Ray Springs the following week, coasting to a 38-0 score. The running of fullback Les Churchill featured the game. On Nov. 1 the Chadron Prep high—lighted their homecoming celebration by dropping Crawford 6-0. Gene Covic ran 18 yards for the only tally. The 1949 season came to a close on Nov. 4 as the Prepsters won over Pine Ridge 3 -13. The half-time saw the Preps ahead 14-13, but the Indians faded in the last half, enabling the Preusters to ennex 3 ouick tallys, all on long runs. Danny Kuska gained a spot on the All State Class C teem and the first team of the All-Conference sauad. 01en Wyatt and Ted Turoln were selected on the All Conference second team. However, these players could not have gained these honors without the coaching of Archie Conn and the loyal support of their team mates. 26
