There are several notable absences at the beginning, but we expect the missing ere the meeting adjourns. Eie meeting la called to order by the stalwart young mayor, Bellowing Bob Luchsinger. As he clears his throat, a commotion is heard at the door, and a late-comer rushes in. It Is brawny Jim Thorness, who has had to work overtime at his Job as bouncer at Bob Joe's. He slips Into a vacant seat next to Thelma King, auctioneer at the Chadron Sale Barn, and the mayor continues. The following procedure takes place: A plea is made by C. S. T. C. Coach Potsy Zuska and Miss Margie Swett, Women's Physical Rducation teacher at the college, for more funds to pay their athletes for working on the city streets. The local financial wizard, Miss Carol Bayllff, suggests that the measure be put before a committee. The mayor therewith makes Miss Bayllff chairman of a committee consisting of Civil Air Patrol Chief Gene Covic, Air Hostess Helen George, and Dixie Hill, who has at last realized her ambition in the medical field. She is scrub woman at the Chadron Municipal Hospital. Measures are passed to establish a Chadron-Alliance jet- driven bus line with Barbara Burkhiser as driver; and to enable the Municipal chorus under the direction of Conductor Wetterstrom to take a nation-wide tour. Short talks are given on safety by Patrolman (Hun-em-in) Bartels; on medical science, by female horse dentist, Shannon Saylor; on rural methods, by Bergette Pettegrew, county agent; and last of all, an address by foreign ambassador Glen Wyatt of Pine Ridge. At this point the meeting is interrupted by a commotion in the hallway. It turns out to be the party of Concert Pianist Rsther Laue, opera stars Merrill Patterson and Rosemary Bailer, and their business agent, Marjorie Ogle, back from a successful appearance at Carnegie Hall. Bringing up the rear is valet Ted Turpin, carrying the luggage. After this party is welcomed and seated, a special ceremony is held, presenting the anmi«i Liar's Club trophy to rancher Bob ly for his tales of South Dakota. After a delicious dinner served by Georgina Logan, social leader of Chadron and president of the Women's Club, the meeting is adjourned. 12 Class Will We, the Class of 50 of Chadron Prep, being of sound mind and body, do make and declare this to be our last will end testament. To the Juniors, we will our remaining asnirins, and one-half bottle of rubber cement as a starter for their annual work next year. To the Sophomores, we will our dramatic ability, our athletic prowess, and our ability to attend classes without absorbing anything. We bestow on the following persons our treasured earthly possessions: I, Rosemary Bailer, will my ambition to study more to Barbara Griffith. I, Jack Bartels, will my driving ability to Waymann Wild. I, Carol Bayliff, bequeath my changeable disposition to Thelma Pettegrew. I, Barbara Burkhiser, will my Spanish class romeos to Delores Bogner, I, Gene Covic, leave my timid personality to Charlie Mums. I, Eob Ugly, will my distance-running ability to John Kent. I, Helen George, will my five-foot-six height to Carma Hawk. I, Dixie Hill, leave my dimples to Margie Rose, so we can't tell them apart. I, Thelma King, leave my boisterous manner to PugH Livermont. I, Danny Kuska, will my never-ending war on teachers to Bob Armstrong. I, Esther Laue, will my blonde hair to Mr. Olson—he's going to need it. I, Merrill Patterson, bequeath my figure to Margery Doell. I, Bergette Pettegrew, leave my catchy name to Carol Brown. I, Marjorie Ogle, will my sparkling wit to Mr. Millar. I, Margie Swett, will one Pretty Boy Kuska to Loralyn Wilson because she looks like she might be able to handle him. I, Ted Turpin, will my curly locks to Mr. Blied. I, Freden Wetterstrom, will my ability to walk down the hall, holding hands, and get away with it to Leroy Woods. After losing 9 regulars end many valuable replacements from the previous year, the 1949 team upset the predictions by attaining second place in the Northwest Nebraska Con- ference. The season opened with a surprise victory over a heavy Igloo teem, outweighing the Preps 20 pounds per man. Danny Kuska intercepted a pass in the final 30 seconds, with the score tied, and sprinted 30 yards for a touchdown, giving the Preps a 27-20 victory. The next week Hemingford was host to the local Preus and after leading 13—0 at half-time, fell to the local Prep team 14—13. The Alliance Reserves furnished the first opposition on the home field and were soundly beaten 46—6. St. Pat's of Sidney journeyed to Chadron the following week but were edged 13-6 after scoring the initial tally. The next week an inspired Rushville team kept the sluggish Preps to a 0-0 tie. The Junior Eagles almost scored several times but could never quite acconrolish this feat. The Prep eleven played their best against Ray Springs the following week, coasting to a 38-0 score. The running of fullback Les Churchill featured the game. On Nov. 1 the Chadron Prep high—lighted their homecoming celebration by dropping Crawford 6-0. Gene Covic ran 18 yards for the only tally. The 1949 season came to a close on Nov. 4 as the Prepsters won over Pine Ridge 3 -13. The half-time saw the Preps ahead 14-13, but the Indians faded in the last half, enabling the Preusters to ennex 3 ouick tallys, all on long runs. Danny Kuska gained a spot on the All State Class C teem and the first team of the All-Conference sauad. 01en Wyatt and Ted Turoln were selected on the All Conference second team. Waverly 30 37 (t adbetba I I Reason The Chadron Prep basketball squad, following the example of the 1948-49 squad, gained the most outstanding honor possible, the State Class C Champion- ship. The Junior Eagles opened with two starters from the previous five: Bob Armstrong and Danny Kuska, forwerds, Glen Wyatt, the sixth man of the team, and Jim Thorness, transfer from Chadron High. These four and Gene Covic, the most improved player of the squad designated the starting five. Sopho- more Charles Muma filled in as the substitute used in this championship com- bination. The Preps opened with victories over Chadron Assumption 46-13, Gordon 57-28, Hemingford 30-24, and Hay Springs 30-24. Kuska ied the scoring in the first two games with 16 and 21 points. The Hemingford geme was high-lighted by the uncanny sniping of Jim Ifcorness, who ended with 15 points. Bob Arm- strong's ability to hit when all the others were cold helped slip Prep past Hay Springs. In the Horthwest Nebraska Tourney, Prep breezed through, coasting by Hemingford 44-23 in the finels. Danny Kuska hit a game high of 33 points and countered 96 in the four gemes. Following this bout the Junior Eagles coasted by St. Agnes and then de- feated Hot Springs 50-39 for the top game of the regular season. The score wa.s tied when Thorness fired 3 quick baskets, insuring the victory. Bob Arm- strong and Kuska led the scoring with 17 and 15 points respectively. The games that followed were conference schools and none furnished stiff opposi- tion. Feb. 24 the Chadron Prep cagers met Wood Lake as a preliminary to a college game and brought in a 54-24 victory. The district meet at Mlnatare was the next block, which the Prep team eased through with victories over Lyman 61-31. Hay Springs 51-20, and Hush- ville 47-32. Chappell, the District Champion at the Grant tourney, fell before the Prepsters 28-22 in a slow, deliberate game, with neither team opening up of- fensively. Armstrong hit for 13 and Kuska 10. Our title bound aggregation then traveled to Lincoln for the State Tourna- ment. The first two games were slow and rugged with superior defense and a high shooting percentage paying off. St. Joe, the only other undefeated team in the C section, fell 40-33 Friend remained even the first half, trailing 12-11. However, in the second half, the Junior Eagles opened up and the con- test was never in doubt. Playing their best team game against the Waverly team, the defending Class C champions, enabled the Preps to become State Champs, winning 47-37. Waverly moved ahead 15—9 at the quarter, but the Preps came back fast to garner a 22-19 half-time lead. Die Vikings kept pace until midway in the third quarter when the Preps zoomed ahead to hold a 39-30 score at the canto. The fourth period was pretty much of a stalling game as several players were approaching the 5 foul mark. Kuska hit 33 points, enabling him to hit the high point total for the tourney and the best single game output. Thorness, Armstrong, Covic, and Wyatt were outstanding on defense and successful at feeding to Kuska. The 1949-50 squad worked hard, trained perfectly and performed well throughout the season----The mark of a champion. 31 Chadron Prep vs. Waverly Picture courtesy of State Journal Printing Co.
