FRESHMAN FOOTBALL Dan Rogers, Mark Fickel, Brett Criss, John Britton, Robert Varmetter, Andy Brase, Ron Merritt, Martin McDonough, Rick Broberg, Rocky Dvorak, Bill Balfany, Phil Shepherd, Doug Zerbst, Rick Blanford, Chris Meier, Ted Jenkins, Jim Montague, Jesse Hogan, Chris Penor, Kenny Colgate. Although this young team played only four games during the football season, they had some fine experiences, showing great promise for next year as they join the varsity High School team. These gridders, unfortunately, had a tough season, finishing with a record of 0-4. Coach Gerry Traphagen backed the twenty boys as they went against Alliance, Hot Springs, Gering, and Gordon. 17

Conference The varsity cross-country team of Bob Cummings, Mike Fuhs, Perry Haddix, Les Rotness, Denise Steffe, and Jon West- emeier; along with the novice team of Galen Lackey, Gary Lackey, Brian Haddix, Doug Slavik, and Ron Westemeier was one of the best that Chadron High has ever had. They were consistent with high team finishes as well as many fine indivi- Champions dual showings through the season. The highlights of the year was the winning of the Western and Rangeland Conference championships. The highlights of the year were the 6-3 victory over Gering;and the tough 8-0 loss to Sidney, in which neither team made a first down the entire first half. Overall the team spirit was high and the season exciting. Selected for the All-State team was Leo Curd at linebacker. Four players also were selected to the Western Conference Team. They were Jay Alderman. Leo Curd, Bob Ferguson, and Kyle Wigington. Leo Curd and Bob Ferguson were voted by their team as the Most Valuable Player for defense and offense respectively.
