The 1975 Chadron High School Annual Staff Presents . . . THE 1975 CARDINAL Chadron High School Chadron, Nebraska Cindy We, Editor Mrs. Fran , Sponsor DEDICA TIOJS The 1975 Chadron High School Cardinal is dedicated to a member of the faculty, Mrs. Marjorie Neeland. Throughout her fourteen years at CHS, Mrs. Neeland has served the school as the Media Specialist for the library. Mrs. Neeland's opinions and advice have always been greatly respected and for this rea- son her sympathetic ear has lent itself many times to people in need—both teachers and stu- dents. As a firm believer in the importance and worth of today's youth, Mrs. Neeland has al- ways enjoyed working with young people and plans to continue doing so after her retirement. With everything she does, Mrs. Neeland will always make time for people and for this we all thank her. At the end of this school year, Mrs. Neeland retires, but her work is not finished ... it is only beginning. She plans to travel, to continue working with youth, and to have time for her many hobbies and interests. It is for these reasons and for the love and loyalty Mrs. Neeland has shown, that we, the Annual Staff, wish to express our gratitude in this small way. 2 The Staff THERE WAS A TIME There was a time for ABC's Kaptain Kangaroo and skinned-up knees. The time then came for playground swings, Mickey Mouse and bubblegum rings. Heroes, too, had a time all their own- but that has gone and we have grown. There was a time for teachers' pets jumprope contests, piroettes. Spring had sprung, life begun Our days were happy in the sun. Our years, they grew so slow, it seemed. We had the time to sit and dream. 3 There was a time we could no longer stall Girls grew pretty, boys grew tall. Junior high years fly right by Learning new things we had to ask Why? For crying and pouting there was little time You had your good days, I had mine. The triumph of high school finally came— Awards, trophies, instant fame. Time was faster------here, then gone Seen in photos, sung in songs Remember problems, good times, smiles— These are the memories to carry along. CHADRON SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS: Doris Harrington, Les Kleman, Jerry Baker, L. J. Fitzgibbon, Margo McCauley. SUP’T OF SCHOOLS As we near the end of the 1974-1975 school term, it is time to bid farewell to another graduating class at Chadron High School. The Class of 1975 has produced a number of winners while in high school--a National Merit Finalist, Elks Scholarship winners, Chadron State College Scholarship winners plus a host of other recognitions--and it is our ear- nest wish that members of the class will continue to make their marks in the years ahead. Educational opportunities provided by the public schools equip students with a foundation from which they may build if they choose some form of post-high school formal education, and, should students elect to go directly into the world of business and commerce, these opportunities must have been utilized to gather entry level skills. You who are graduating have been exposed to these educational opportunities. The degree to which you have capitalized on these opportunities will become apparent in the next few years. Best wishes to members of the Class of 1975! 6 Elmer W. Corbit Superintendent Elmer W. Corbit PRINCIPAL REX JONES High School Students As high school students, you are passing an important milestone. In a few years you enter into a society that is filled with challenge and opportunity. What you do with your lives from this point forward will determine not only your personal self-ful- fillment, but the general well-being of our nation. Education is the greatest key to a better life. But to open the door of opportunity you need faith in yourselves, pride in what you have accomplished, and the idealism to persevere. If you add to this the aware- ness that learning never ceases, you will indeed bring to your lives the kind of meaning and satisfaction you seek. Now is the time. STUDENTS ChadronHigh School was fortunate enough to have two foreign exchange students this year-Pedro Banderas from Riobamba, Ecuador, and Vitor Silva from Recife, Brazil. Both stu- dents were able to attend CHS for the entire school year. Both boys are from large cities and so the rural area of Chadron was a new experience. Pedro's city, Rio- bamba is capital of the providence of Chimborazo. Recife, Vitor's home town, is a large coastal city on the Atlantic Ocean. Climate changes also were different, as neither had seen snow as plentiful as we had last winter. During the course of the year, both Vitor and Pedro were able to join in the CHS life and actively partici- pated in organizations and activities. They also spoke about their native countries to many organizations in the Community. Both were students in Spanish classes where they added much to the curriculum. Best wishes, Pedro and Vitor, in the future! Senior attendents, Bill Ryan and Dana Toczek, Cindy Jansen and Ed Katen, with King Ted Grant and Queen Jane Tangeman. October 4, 1974 was a great day for Homecoming. Rain clouds threatened in early morning but the day remained sunny. But a good day was finally made a great day when CHS' football team captured a glorious vic- tory over Gering High. Junior attendents Millie Lecher and Rick Deans. Junior attendents Kirk Nydahl and Theresa Osborn. Sophomore attendents Tim Jansen and Janet Sheaffer. Sophomore attendents JoElla Nissen and Philip Curd. 29 As nice as Homecoming Day was itself, it was only possible through a lot of hard work the preceding week. With much to do in little time, it seemed nothing would ever get done. There were floats and cars to decorate and the gym to transform. Coronation practice was held Thursday morning and a pep rally with a bonfire Thursday night. But all the work became worthwhile when Friday came. Mini Course week is one of the most exciting weeks of the school year. At this time, students are given opportunities to learn about non-tradi- tional subjects and teachers are allowed to teach these different things. A new atmosphere envelopes CHS as girls hammer nails and guys bake cakes. Dying arts such as rope making are revived and interesting places visited via slides. All these things make Mini Course week a very popular and educational one. CAMELOT Major Cast Members King Arthur . Guenevere . Lancelot . . . Merlyn . . . Pellinore . . Morgan Le Fey Mordred . . VOLLEYBALL A talented Varsity Volleyball team brought home eleven wins and six losses for the season. The equally endowed reserve squad compiled a 11-1 record. This was possible through hard work by the girls and fine coaching by Mary Lou Marshall and Ann Frausto. The height of the season was bringing home the Rangeland Trophy from a victory over Valentine who had beaten us once before. The team loses 6 seniors: Joy Lembke, Patti Ross, LeAnn Holmes, Laurie Lessman, Cheryl Hutchison, and Debbie Sayer. Just another huddle. Volleyball girls display the Rangeland Trophy. The wrestling squad will lose eight seniors: Jim White, Clyde Katen, Bruce Roberts, Tim Mclnnis, Kevin Jones, Bob Hampton, Alan Cisneros, and Eric Reid. Wrestling is a unique sport. Crowds cheer and coaches yell instructions, but during a match, the wrestler is alone with the opponent and official. His success or failure, depends entirely upon his own effort. But, isn't this the way it was meant to be? Coach Kant contemplates strategy. 70 The State Wrestling Tournament is the high point of the wrestling season. To qualify for State the wrestler has to place 1st or 2nd at the District Tournament. Five Chadron wrestlers qualified this year-Bob Hampton (Sr-112), Tim Mclnnis (Sr-145)t Kevin Jones (Sr-138), Fred Frankhauser (Jr-132), and Tim White (Sr-HWT). When the tournament came to an end Chadron had won 2nd in Class B and brought home individual places of one first, three seconds, and a third. Jones was First in the Class B 138 weight class while Bob Hampton (112), Fred Fankhauser (132), and Jim White (HWT) took seconds. Tim Mclnnis(145) took a third. These varied emotions were evident in the crowd reactions after the graduation cere- monies.
