Text from Pages 1 - 112 of the 1970 volume:

Time it icas. And what a time it was, It was . . . A time of innocence, A time of confidences. Long ago ... it must be . . I have a photograph. Preserve your memories, They’re all that’s left you. Paul Simon THE ANNUAL STAFF OF 1970 PRESENTS THE 1970 CARDINAL 4 L' ✓ The world in which we live is a world of human beings who do the good, the bad. the useless, the noble, the brave, the foolish and the wise things. No man exists alone, for everyone of us is touched by other people. We may be- gin our lives by giving love to one other human being, but if we are wise, that love extends to family, friends, our little world and so to all humanity. In this book are pictures of life as people see it. Author Unknown “THE TIME IS NOW” IT IS A TIME FOR LIVING 2 As one looks down the rows of empty scats, a feeling of desolation is formed in one’s mind. Now. imagine the room filled with people talking, laughing, and playing. It springs to life; it has personality. People shape our school and give it life; without them the school is only an empty building. CORBIT, SUPERINTENDENT This has been another banner year for the Chadron City School System as the Middle School makes application to join the High School as approved members of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges. Chadron High School has maintained continuous membership in NCA since 1918. This agency is an accrediting association for 19 states from West Virginia through the Great Lakes area, and on west to Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The North Central Association has only recently estab- lished criteria for membership of junior high schools or middle schools, and membership on the part of a school marks that institution as one meeting very high standards of educational excellence. May the students of Chadron High School enjoy this book not only for this year, but for years to come! Elmer W. Corbit 8 MR. MYERS, PRINCIPAL Time gives the impression of being a lasting, ever- present commodity. As we come to the close of another school year, we find that some more months have slipped from our grasp. It is our hope that the time has been well spent, that strong foundations have been laid, and that good super-structures will result. Let us approach the future with determination to do the best we can, and with confidence that we are prepared. 9 FACULTY NATALIE MARTIN Chadron State R.S. in Languages M.S. in English Subject: Spanish I, Spanish II, French I, French II Sponsor: Foreign Language Club, Future Teachers of America GERALDINE SIMONTON Chadron State M.S. in Education Subject: English 11 Sponsor: Student Council DURELL THOMPSON Colorado State M.A. in Music Subject: Band, Music Theory CRAIG MADSON Chadron State B.S. in Speech Subject: English 10, English 12 Sponsor: Sophomore Gass JOHN WARNING University of Wyoming M.A. in Education and Guidance Guidance Counselor 10 DICK GAMET Colorado State B.A. in Music Subject: Mixed Choir, Choir 9 Sponsor: Junior Class ED PLANANSKY Chadron State B.S. in Chemistry and Math Subject: Chemistry, Senior Science, Physics Sponsor: Senior Class SUSAN JOHNSON Chadron State B.S. in Business Education Subject: Shorthand, English 10. Four senior boys, Alan Chesbro, Steve Hansen, Lee Baumann and Scott Wieting were selected for the All-Con- ference team. Two others, Walter Wasserburger and Bill Dierksen, were given honorable mention. The Cardinals initiated a “Century Club” for their defensive players. A system was used whereby a certain number of points were given for each tackle, coverage of a fumble and assist. When a player accumulated one hundred points or more, he was a member of the club. The top four Century Club members were Steve Hansen, Bruce Holcomb, Scott Martin, and Bryce Bump, respectively. Other members were: Don Lliteras, Andy Curd, Scott Wieting, Mark Tyler, Walt Wasserburger, Greg Alderman, Merle Thornton, Bill Dierksen and Dave Smith. Cardinal quarterback Lee Baumann smashed records as he passed his way into the record books. Baumann’s totals in offense by far surpassed records for the past fourteen years at the high school. He threw 142 passes and completed 64 for a total of 1,306 yards and 7 touchdowns. 66 BASKETBALL A-SQUAD First Row: Alan Chesbro, Lee Baumann, Steve Hansen, Scott Wiet- ing. Bill Dierkscn, Dave Smith. B-SQUAD The Chadron Cardinal's cage team ended their 1969-1970 season with a 13-8 record. It was a slightly disappointing season with a few very close losses and many tense games. The team averaged 59 points per game while only allowing their opponents 51.1 points. The team worked hard and earned the third place trophy at the Chad- ron State College Holiday Tournament. The most valuable player for the season was Steve Hansen. Steve set a new record for rebounds in making 261 in 21 games and also was the field goal champ in mak- ing 46.2 percent of his shots. Bill Dierksen earned the honor of Defensive Player of the Year from a vote By his teammates. The efforts of two other senior boys. Scott Wieting and Dave Smith cannot be forgotten as they played very essential and im- portant roles in the team’s success. Bill Dierksen was named to the Western Conference team and Lee Baumann and Steve Hansen were named to the West Rangeland team, an honor for both the boys and our school. All our boys worked hard this year and we are very proud of them. WRESTLING B-SQUAD-Back Row: Walter Wasserburger, Don Waggener, Brad Lauc, Rob Witte, Ed Planansky, Coach. Front Row: Gus Hagnian, Jan Snook, Eric Nixon, and Roland Nixon. 70 Our Coach Kant. The 1969-1970 season for the Chadron High Grapplers ended in our send- ing two boys to the state tournaments, Dennis Nixon, in the 175 pound class, and Alburn Fisher, heavyweight. The season’s record showed many close matches lost by only a few points, which made our season only par- tially as successful as we had hoped. Two seniors, Mike Nixon and Mark Tyler, having fine seasons, were not able to qualify for state due to unfor- tunate “quirks of fate.” Crowds cheer and coaches yell out instructions; but during a match the wrestler is alone with his competitor and an official who tries to keep the conflict orderly. His success or failure, his victory or defeat, depends entirely on his own effort; but isn’t this as it should be for all our life? A-SQUAD-Back Row: Album Fisher. They have been very active in school affairs. This year’s activities include selling candy, sponsoring the Penny Princess Christmas dance, sponsoring an all school play, “Lo and Behold, making stationary with the school picture on it available to the student body, and sponsoring the Sweetheart Ball. One of their favorite projects was the adoption of a child in the name of the school. Little Charlie Lee Goolwas introduced to the stu- dent body as the surprise royalty at the Sweetheart Ball. The Student Council helped formulate the C.H.S. dress code as well as conducted a poll among the students that set up the policy of who could attend all-school dances. 82 CARDINAL BAND First Row: Jane Fisher, Theresa Duncan. We marched in various parades and received two superior ratings, one at the CSC Band Day and one at Fort Collins, Colorado. Many of us participated in pep band, pit band, stage band, and other small groups. Toward the end of the year we were active in several concerts and received an Excellent at the District Contest at Alliance, Nebraska. We would like to thank Mr. Durrell Thompson, our director, for making this a fun and most rewarding year. 83 MUSIC CONTEST Sax Trio: Steve Britton, Jim Amen, Virginia Sommers.
