Members of the woodwind quintet held frequent “midnight oil” practice sessions in preparation for Music Contest. Stephanie Madsen and Brenda Milligan execute a flawless end sweep during practice for the “powder- puff” football game. 3 Mrs. Van Sant adds last-minute touches to Linda Red- fern’s hair before curtain time. “Are you sure it’s not past your bedtime, Dean?” asks Vicki Harper. “O.K., we’ve left out a step here somewhere ... 4 Librarians Tom Paulson and Mike Heidebrecht discuss controversial aspects of the “1 may only have nine toes, but 1 Dewey Decimal System during a break. have 15 fingers,” states Bill Dawkins. Lost in thought at half time, Mark Peyton worries about the final quarters of an important game. “I’ll say one thing for you, Charlie, you’ve got a unique approach,” kids Janet Tuma. s Although we cannot forget the closeness that was evident in the old school, the many windows, and the ample parking space, we looked forward to the new school, the new lockers, and the new traditions with an expectation that was apparent. To be the first graduating class, to start new traditions, and to know we had one of the most modern schools anywhere were all important to us-thc Class of 1969-but it cannot be said that we left the old building without regrets. Can it be that we really missed all those stairs, the crowded halls, and the lockers that never stayed closed? Yes, each of us felt a little sad when we remembered the old school. It is as if we knew that a part of our lives had ended and is now only a memory. Now we look to the future and try to visualize what will happen and how our lives will change. -Cindy Hill— 7 At the time this is being written, the first semester of the 1968-1969 school term has just drawn to a close. Students in the new high school building have learned to find their way around the facility and are appreciating the new opportunities provided to them. Students have found more courses being offered and better classrooms and laborator- ies for their work and study. Most students have taken advantage of the improved oppor- tunities to better equip themselves for the demands of the future. This, of course, is necessary if the taxpayers of Chadron are to realize a fair return on their investment in the new school facility. It is our hope that the educational oppor- tunities offered to the youth of Chadron may continue to meet the needs of those gradu- ating next year and the years that follow. -Elmer Corbit ELMER CORBIT, Superintendent Chadron Public Schools SCHOOL BOARD 8 Laverne Fitzgibbon, Richard Stahla, Allen Alderman, Pat Muldoon, Harley Olson, Les KJeman. JAMES MYERS, Principal Chadron Senior High School Chadron Senior High School represents the fulfillment of the dreams of many people over a period of years. The new building contributes in a large measure to the education of the youth. The contrast between the crowded conditions of past years to the present spacious halls and classrooms is evident to all. The expanded program is a direct outgrowth of the new building. The actual education gathered in these halls is dependent on many factors, and one of the greatest of these is the desire to learn. We are proud to have people in our student body who are here to learn, dedicated people on our faculty who are here to teach, and a citizenry which is concerned to the extent of sacrificing for the needs of youth. It is our hope that this community will continue to be activated by such high mot- ives. —James Myers 9 FACULTY SELEN DEINES- B.S., C.S.C. Girls’ P.E. (10-12). Elementary P.E. (2-5). The first year of the Chadron High Student Council has been, without a doubt, a successful one. Many of the goals set at the first of the year have been reached, and a good foundation has been set for years to come. Chadron High School was represented at the State Student Council Convention in Norfolk by eight StuCo members. A great deal of information was gathered at the convention that will be helpful to the council members next year. Student Council members frequently discuss problems with Mr. Myers. The 1969 CARDINAL is the pro- duct of countless hours of work—by a number of people. And it is different . . . not for the sake of change, but for the sake of im- provement. A sincere attempt was made to cap- ture the year as it was, to show things as they were and are. These words are typical to the dramatic scene. On these two pages the Annual Staff would like to show the theatre, both on stage and be- hind the scenes. The hours of hard work and the time and energy spent leading up to the climax, the ac- tual presentation, are a very important part of the show. The director, the light crew, the make-up men, and the production staff are the silent men behind the actors, who, working together, make a successful play. The actors and actresses in the plays this year have gone “all out” in their interpreta- tions of the characters. The first play presented this year concerned a little old lady and her optimistic views on life, and how her philosophy changed the minds of three would-be killers. “The Education of Hyman Kaplan,” a mu- sical comedy, was the story of a Russian im- migrant striving to attain the rights of a natu- ralized American citizen while trying to win the woman he loved. The senior play, “Dear Ruth,” a comedy, was the story of a young girl who wrote to an overseas soldier in her sister’s name. 36 “And the play is only three days away,” notes concerned director Mrs. Van Sant. “It just so happens my brother Max does have a glass eye,” explains Hyman Kaplan, played by Bert Schoettger. “I know vhat kind of husband I vant to be,” sings Rory Hall as Eisel Fishbein in the “Education of Hyman Kaplan.” 37 KING QUEEN RON GRANT KIM GRANTHAM SENIOR ATTENDANTS GARY WEAVER ANITA RHOADS CURT LECHER BILLIE CLARK 38 HOMECOMING ATTENDANTS BRAD CANE LORRIE JOHNSON CHUCK OSBORNE VICKIE RUNYAN STEVE HANSEN SCOTT MARTIN LYNN BOLLN CAROL NORDSTROM 39 40 SWEETHEART’S BALL JUNIOR ATTENDANTS: DeAnn Glenn, Andy Curd. The Chadron High Cardinals had a great season, winning the Western Rangeland title with a 3-0 Conference record. The Cards then defeated Valentine to take the Rangeland Conference title, running the overall season record to nine wins and one loss. The reserves racked up a total of four wins, no losses, and one tie. Head Coach Rex Jones said he was happy with the “improvement and progress of the team through the year. We played some real tough opponents this year and we played real well against all of them.” Chadron High was ranked eighth in the state in Class “B” by the OMAHA WORLD- HERALD, the LINCOLN STAR, and the LINCOLN JOURNAL. 46 Cards prove hard practice pays off. Also, there are few people (in Chad- ron High School, at least) who are willing to put forth the time and effort the sport requires. Thus, as Rex Nowlan put it, “Few experience the thrill of running a two-mile course while dodging cows, bottomless pits, barbed wire, flying golf balls, etc., risking life and limb to catch the guy out front.” COACH WAYNE JONES ss LEWIS OSTRAND, BING DECKER C-CLUB FIRST ROW: Lee Baumann, Scott Weiting, Don Wag- gener, Bob Vrbka, Bill Dawkins, Bob Roos, Gary Hudson, Greg Alderman, Tom Weber, Mark Peyton, Bill Dierksen, David Smith, Steve Yantzi, Coach Jones, Sponsor. CARDS GO TO STATE “I know my heart, I know my mind; 1 know that I stick out behind,” chant two rather embarrassed Pep Club pledges. March found many Chadron fans fol- lowing their team to Lincoln. They traveled by plane, train, car and bus. The more wealthy and earlier supporters were lucky enough to stay in furnished lodgings. Most of the high school fans stayed in the Nebraska Center or in homes of friends. At the tournament, Chadron fans were disappointed at their team’s defeat; but they found some con- solation in the fact that Crete, the team that beat Chadron, won the Class “B” title. 59 CARDINAL CO-EDS FIRST ROW: Mrs. Selen Deines, Sponsor; Launa Jones, Captain; Sally Tyree, Co-Captain; Linda Lar- son, Secretary-Treasurer; Mrs. Dorothy Pine, Sponsor.
