Li F DEDICATION A school is more than a structure with classrooms for the instruction of young people. It is a spirit that cannot really be described. This spirit is the thing that makes a person say with pride that he is from Chadron High School and the thing that makes him get excited when the school's football team is one touchdown behind and is on the opposing team's one yard line. This spirit is the driving force behind the formation of everything from a good athletic team to a good marching band. Chadron High School has a school spirit of which any school would be proud. It is to this school spirit that we, the staff of 1965, dedi- cate this CARDINAL. We, the students of Chadron High School, thank them for their lasting concern over our education and welfare. JAMES MYERS Principal 40 GLEN GOODRICH BOB BAUMANN LA VERN FITZGIBBON SECRETARIES BEVERLY MARGARET WETTING CHERRICK MRS. SIMONTON English ENGLISH - SPEECH MRS. VAN SANT Speech, world history, and world geography MRS. GRAVES English Four years of English are required at Chadron High to graduate. However, many students choose so substitute speech for one year. Speech classes include impromptu speeches and simulated radio programs. Students begin with general courses in grammar and literature and then move on to more advanced study. 42 MRS. BROOKS Commercial MISS BARNUM English and music COMMERCIAL The commercial courses are offered to enable students to choose possible vocations in the business world. The classes include typing, shorthand, book- keeping, and secretarial training. These courses require a solid background in English and math- ematics. 43 MRS. EVANS Typing and girls' P. E. MRS. BUNDE English and typing MR. TURNER Mathematics At Chadron High this year mathematics has changed. Teaching has become modern with a new method being taught. General math this year involves the study of the main elements of arith- metic; beginning algebra involves the principle of element in a set; geometry involves mathematical proof, mathematical concepts, and a study of planes and space; advanced algebra involves a study of functions and a continuation of beginning algebra; trigonometry involves vectors, complex numbers, logarithms, computations and solutions of triangles. Advanced math involves sequences and series, in- equalities, and sets. As the world advances computations are be- coming more necessary for they will put future generations on the planets, and they will evolve a new living. MATHEMATICS 44 MR. WATSON Science SCIENCE In explanation of the phenomenon dominating our universe, men have devised a logical point of view and methods to prove or disprove the theories resulting from it. Compilations are now taught in basic, class- ified groups of the natural and physical sciences which are broken down so that the average person may understand and profit by them. The sciences taught at Chadron High School are general science, a basic study of all natural and physical science; biology, a study of living things and their environments; chemistry, a study of the elements of matter and their changes; and physics, the study of energy and matter and their interactions. That man may better understand his world so that his world may be a better place to live lets us understand why sciences are taught. MR. PIERONTONI Mathematics 45 MRS. HULS MR. WATTS SOCIAL SCIENCES MR. MURRAY News and current events media give us a bird's eye view inside the activities of the world in which we live. Because our world is so intricate and com- plicated by the past, present, and thoughts of the future, we need a background to help us understand it. This background is received in the study of the social sciences. Through world history the past, its ideas and mistakes are placed before us, and we learn from this past experience . World geography illuminates many of the rea- sons that cause occurrences in the history of a nation or people. United States history gives a more detailed study of our nations past and its progress toward the future. Social problems build our understanding of the government under which our nation functions and also places international problems more clearly be- fore us. All of these are necessary to a good under- standing of the problems facing us as the leaders of tomorrow. 46 HOME ECONOMICS The purpose of our home economics department covers many areas and age groups. These students learn by demonstration, experience, and doing. The beginning class, composed mainly of freshmen, learns the basic principles of cooking and sewing. The sopho- mores go into wool garments and preparing meals. The junior class studies interior decorating and cooking. The seniors sew more advanced garments, study family management, and cook unusual and foreign dishes. MRS. PINE Home economics LIBRARY The Chadron High School library has been making marked effort to improve and expand library facilities to benefit the needs of the students better. The library is well operated and gives individual attention to the requirements of each student. Next to acquiring good friends, the best acquisition is that of good books. Colton. MRS. NEELAND Library GUIDANCE Young people are the lifeblood of a successful school, and through the guidance program these young people are encouraged to discover their po- tential abilities to become happier, better adjusted students. Not only do they become a credit to the school, but also they are better fitted for the future. MR. REIER 47 Guidance MUSIC MR. FITZGIBBON Industrial arts INDUSTRIAL ARTS Industrial arts and hobby crafts are available to the student who enjoys working with leather, wood, and copper. Those interested in music may participate in chorus, band, and music theory. The students who take part become better able to appreciate the enjoyment of music. FOREIGN LANGUAGES Foreign languages consisting of Spanish, French, and German are offered for the students who are interested. These courses are offered at the college and can be included in the high school curriculum. MC PHETTERS Music 48 M I til SENIOR ATTENDANTS Diane Anthony and Larry Wineteer SENIOR ATTENDANTS Rhonda Bach and Clint Hungerford HOMECOMING - 1964 The days and nights before homecoming hustled with feverish activity as each class and school organization prepared for the coming event. Then the day! Last minute details were quickly completed; students and faculty breath- lessly awaited the stirring moment. The band played a dignified march, the honor guard stood at attention, the attendants dazzled the stage proudly waiting for the entrance of the royalty. Slowly, through the cotton candy arches, Joyce Rice and Gay Thompson proceeded to the elaborate, lovely throne. When the coronation was complete everyone left to see the parade. Nothing is more rousing than a good parade--the marching bands, the original floats, and the lovely girls. This was such a parade and a perfect beginning for the exciting game and dance later in the evening. Gaye Thompson was the spark plug of the team this season with a total of 198 yards gained and a total of 16 points scored. 59 STARTING II Excitement, ambition, and good sportsmanship prevailed throughout our football season. The team fought long and hard in every game they undertook and although it was not quite up to expectations, we chalk this past season up as a year of experience and will try to boost our team to greater heights next year. 4 1 % % 60 OUR OUTSTANDING COACH Chadron High School holds claim to many out- standing football seasons since 1954. We feel these seasons have been boosted in a large part by an out- standing coach, Mr. Gordon Watts. After graduating from Chadron State College in 1952, he entered the Chadron Public School sys- tem and has been teaching here ever since. Out of those thirteen years has come an unusual record. His team in 1954 was the first undefeated team since 1927. Since then, there have been three undefeated high school teams under him. Also, he has opened the door to nine championships and one state cham- pionship. Since 1954, Chadron has chalked up 79 wins, 17 losses and 4 ties which is quite a record. It is interesting to note that of his first football team in 1954, six of the boys went on to enter the field of teaching and coaching. B SQUAD CHS BAND UNDER THE DIRECTION OF DENNIS MAC PHEETERS CHADRON HIGH BAND Chadron High School band was well represented at the Colorado University Marching festival at Boulder, Colorado. It received very superior in parade compe- tition, very superior in inspection, and superior in field maneuvers. The band displayed its winning skill during the half-time of home football games, and the pep band boosted school spirit at pep rallies and basketball games throughout the year. The concert band and various groups of band members made successful appear- ances in a Christmas concert, a spring concert, and at the district six (6) music contest. Though the year was not particularly boosted by a great 66 Bill Kennedy, Dayton Lyman, Gay Thompson, Mike Glode, Larry Wineteer. 1964 - 65 number of victories, the Cards have out-played first of the year speculations. Out of last year’s starting twelve, only three returned to back the team this year. 67 Norman McLeod, Ron Rawalt, Rick Anthony, Gregg Ostrander, Gordon Schaffer, and coach, Mr. Murray. B SQUAD BASKETBALL MR. TURNER In the four years that Mr. Turner has coached basketball he has been impressed by the enthusiastic boys he has been privileged to work with. Mr. Tur- ner has coached Chadron High Cardinals through many victories and several titles. In 1961-62 the Cards won 10 and lost 6 games. They also won the Northwestern Nebraska Tournament that year. 62-63 showed 11 wins and 7 losses and 63-64 boasted 13 wins and 9 losses. The last two years the Cards have tied for the West Rangeland title with a 4-2 record. During his coaching years the Cards have never fin- ished lower than second place. This year during the 64-65 season the Cards have had 9 wins and 8 losses. This record is much better since only three of last years starting twelve are back this year. Mr. Turner believes that this is due to the energetic school spirit shown by the stu- dents and the determination of the boys. Cactus Shumway, Gary Morgan, Jim Reitz, Bob Dotson, Mike Baumann. 1964 - 65 Mr. Turner is also teaching advanced Math in the high school and is assistant football and track coach. Carl Malmgren, Student Manager Working on the yearbook staff is a tiresome and often thankless ex- perience. The members of this year's staff have devoted many hours of labor to the construction of a successful annual. As editor of the 1965 CARDINAL, I would like to thank these people for their efforts. I hope that you, the students of Chadron High School, also thank them by show- ing your appreciation for the existence of this yearbook. The juniors who campaign and are elected to office participate in this event. Each elected junior learns the duties of his office from the actual county official. The American Legion then sponsors a luncheon featuring a guest speaker. The afternoon is highlighted by a mock trial over which students preside. The students who took part in County Government Day had a wonderful and memorable experience and enjoyed themselves thoroughly. 78 Jacque Wetzel, Annual Staff Busy, Office Girls? Business Manager.
