Saniai C Miatoxy The story you are about to read is true. The names have not been changed to protect the innocent--there are none! 1944 It was Monday morning; hot and stormy looking inChadron. Eighteen scrubbed and brushed little children were committed on that day to the Chadron Public Schools to begin serving an eight year sentence of hard labor. Those starting out on that fateful day in September of 1944 were: Phyllis Barber, Jerry Beem, Jean Braddock, Ron Brown, Wyoma Brown, Dale Childerston, Mary Lowry, Margaret MacKinlay, Virginia Mattheson, John Miller, Claudette Rook, Shirley Schmechel, Shirley Shaw, Milford Smith, Jim Whetstine, Ron Wiley. Faye Witt and Jim Zeman. 1945 In 1945, Caroline Campbell and Marlene Rasmussen were sent up for the inexcusable crime of stealing know- ledge from our rural area. Dale Childerston, Shirley Schmechel, Shirley Shaw and Phyllis Barber pulled a daring escape and we were without them during our second year. 1946 Their freedom was short-lived, however, as WANTED circulars were sent to local law enforcement agencies. Consequently, Dale Childerston and Shirley Schmechel were back for our third year. Shirley Shaw and Phyllis Barber were still loose; whereabouts unknown. 1947 Even the best of us slip up. Shirley Shaw was no exception. She found herself under lock and key once again in the fourth grade. Rosalie Yoakum was convicted on a petty larceny charge during this year. 1948 In 1948, the jig was up for Phyllis Barber. She was picked up on a 103674 and was sentenced to the horrible fate of spending the next seven years with us in Block 5. 1949 During our sixth year at crushing the rocks of knowledge, we added two new faces to our line up . These were Jolene Cogil and Jim Wertz. 1950 The crime rate is increasing rapidly. This year no less than five people found themselves thrown into our midst. The new inmates to Cell 7 were Marlene Cockle, Bill Finley, Mel Garner, Rita King and Bill Kohler. 1951 We nearly had a riot in Cell 8 encouraged by the arrival of Nancy Moody and also by the fact that this was the last year of our eight year sentence. Another of our cell mates tunneled out this year; none other than Caroline Campbell. Due to our unruly behavior, our parole was not granted and we faced an additional four year sentence. 1952 We were then sent up the river where we met Phyllis Augustine, Barbara Case, Connie and Nick Makris (the Notorious Twins), Gene McGannon, Judy Mershon, Jean Miller, Skip Norman,. DugaId Richardson, Joyce Sager, and Carl Wells. We also found Caroline Campbell. It seems that she, too, had found that Crime doesn't pay. Jim Whetstine, on the contrary, picked this year to force his way out. 1953 Spurred on by their buddy's success, Jerry Beem and Bill Kohler shot their way out. It was rumored that they joined Whetstine out on the coast and became a gang known far and wide as the Terrible Trio. 1954 This year we had one addition and two subtractions (SEE!! we did learn our math!)| Jim Whetstine, a reformed character, gave himself up at the local FBI office and was immediately put in our little dungeon. The two sub- tractions were Judy Mershon and Dale Childerston. 1955 This, our last year, was accentuated by the return of Jerry Beem, Dale Childerston, Bill Kohler and Judy Mershon. Finally, we were called to the Warden's office and our parole case was reviewed. This time we were successful. Now, after serving our 12 years on the inside and supposedly having learned? something, we stand on the outside, supposedly learning? more?? Case Number 194456 From the files of Chadron High School Bureau of Investigation Statistics
