Fourth Row: Coach Watts, Assistant Coach Lewellen, LeRoy Keim, Bob Lowry, Joe Finley, Gary Butler, Gordon Corey, and Coach Schweir, DON MATHIS REX JONES Don used both powerful blasts on straight plays and a fine broken field display. He picked up 110 points which is 25 more than the total opposition. His accuracy from the conversion line was without equal in western Nebraska. He had an average of eight yards per carry and led the conference in scoring. He was selected for All Northwest Conference First team, Honorable Mention for all-state and elected by his team mates Most Valuable Player of 54 . Rex managed the Cards throughout the season with few if any tactical mistakes. His passing was brilliant. His pitchouts frequently worked to perfection, andhis deception on the bootleg play throughout the year con - founded the defense and the fans. He made First team All Northwest Conference two years. First team All State, Class B, and waschosenHonoraryTeam Captain for the season. Chadron High-Gering Victory was sweet as the Cards of C.H.S. nicked the Gering High Bulldogs and their former Coach Carl McManis 13-7. The Chadron High team spotted the starting Gering eleven 18 pounds per man and then played them off their feet in every department. Don(The Toe) Mathis was the outstanding performer on his long runs and scored one touchdown. Brown also scored through the line with Mathis adding the extra point after missing for the first time of the season. Blundell and Hagman also spent the evening in the Gering backfield as uninvited guests, smearing Gering backs far behind the scrimmage line. Chadron High-Hay Springs Chadron High's flashy backs rolled up yardage all over the Hay Springs gridiron as the Chadron line continued to break open large holes in the Hawks line and went on to win 20-6. In a ball game that had the scoring divided with Rex Jones, Ron Brown, and a pass from Jones to Mathis with Mathis making the conversions. The Hay Springs crew were outclassed all the way, until the Chadron bench was cleared. When Hay Springs made their lone tally, endTomHagman, Tackle Darrel Coburn, and Center John Miller turned in particularly good games. Chadron High-Rushville Don Mathis - prize Chadron High fullback spelled the difference as he booted the vital three points necessary for the victory and also scored two of the Chadron touchdowns, one of them on a startling49 yard breakaway run in the final quarter to bring the Cards from behind. Tom Hagman, along with his fellow linemen, performed more than creditably against their heavier opponents. The Cards were outweighed 11 1 2 pounds per man. Chadron High-Bayard The Cardinals got off to a running start in the Panhandle Class B by clipping the powerful Bayard Tigers 20-6. Don Mathis picked up the first touchdown of the year as he powered through the line from the six yard line. Halfback Ron Brown then took scoring honors on two touchdowns, one on a pass from Rex Jones and the other running. Mathis converted for extra points. Rex Jones was cited by almost everyone for his ball handling and field generalship. Chadron High-Bridgeport Chadron High continued to run roughshod over all Conference opposition as they, this time with a 19-6 win over a strong Panhandle B Bulldog crew at Bridgeport. Bridgeport got off to a fast start and scored in the first quarter. The Cards then started with two drives for touchdowns. In the fourth quarter Ron Brown's interception of a Bridgeport pass was the key play and turning point in the contest as Mathis on the next play went 63 yards for the touchdown. Mathis provided the edge in statistics as he scored 19 points, two on running plays, and one on a 20 yard pass from Jones. He also made 206 of the 217 yards gained rushing. Chadron High-Gordan The homecoming festivities were dampened a bit as Chadron High tied the Gordon Broncs 14-14, the only blight in their fine season record. Don Mathis collected the points which was highlighted by a key block by Tom Blundell. The Broncscame back during the second half to threaten seriously, but the Chadron line dug in and held defensively and escaped on the running of Ron Brown and Ed Witte. This was a game that was about as even as it could be, with Chadron having 309 yards of rushing yardage and 11 first downs to Gor- don's 306 yards and 11 first downs. Chadron High - Hemingford Chadron High all but sewed up the Northwest Conference Championship by their trampling of the Hem - ingford Bobcats 27-0. Chadron scored in every quarter with the scoring divided between Ed Witte, Ron Brown, Don Mathis, and Rex Jones. Jones’s deception baffled the Bobcats along with the long gains by Mathis, and the slashing performance of Brown and Witte. The entire Chadron line played a fine game and to name one or two would be unfair to half a dozen others. Noted Tom Blundell, Bob Shaw, Emory Scherbarth, John Miller, Don Jones, Gene Me Gannon, Darrel Coburn, and Tom Hagman all of whom charged well and tackled sharply. An example shows that the Card forward wall gave up a total of 79 yards, while Chadron backs were plowing through the Hemingford line for 284 yards. Chadron High - Hot Springs In a non-conference grid contest the Cards easily defeated the Hot Springs Bison 41 - 20. Halfback Ron Brown turned in his most brilliant running game of the season as he scored three touchdowns, helped set up two others, made the games only pass interception, was on the receiving end of a number of passes thrown by Rex Jones, handled most of the kicking chores, and he also brought the crowd to its feet with long broken - field running. Although the game was almost no contest, Coach Warn cleared his bench reserves which had a creditable showing. The scoring was spread out with Brown leading with 18 points. Mathis with 16, Blundell with 6, and Weaver with 1. Coach Lewellen and the First Six: Johnny Miller, Spec Brown, Mel Garner, Denny Turechek, Tom Blundell and Rex Jones.
