Our Lady Dons finished their season in 4th place, with an overall record of 14-9, and record 6-6. Carol Brandt, our M.V.P., scored the most points in a game, 38 pts., a Cerritos record. Their most outstanding game was against Gahr in which it was the first time Cerritos girls beat Gahr. The Lady Dons didn't make it to the playoffs but played very well and hope to return next year, taking a place in the playoffs. 1. Carol Brandt the MVP 2. The 1982-1983 Var basketball team 3. The girls finished 4th in league with a league record of 4-6 and an overall record of 9-9. With the majority of the team being freshman and plus, the injury of returning player Michelle Gutierrez, Coach Sims had a lot of work ahead of her. But, the girls did pretty well for being rookies. 83-84 should be a more experienced team. 1 1982-8 Girls J.V. Team 2. Cheryl Miller eat your heart out, says Mic heie Mitchel. Basketball 4 TALENTED AND DEDICATED! The 1982 Frosh Basketball team under the excellent coaching of Joe Mendoza and Ceroge Yezback had a successful and enjoyable season. They had an overall record of 13-6 and a 8-4 league record. In the first round of league the Baby Dons lost to Gahr and Lynwood by one and two point margins. Coach Mendoza said, They lacked the confidence and experience to win close games. The turning point came with a 49-47 overtime win over Lynwood, in the second round of league play. At that point in time. Coach Mendoza realized the tremendous improvement the team had made. The team consisted of fine and dedicated, young men and Coach Mendoza stated that they would all be winners at the Varsity level. 1 Ritchie Monteiro tippin' it in 2 lohn Hakopian choosing his best opening for the pass. 3. The Frosh Basketball team A SLOW BEGINNING, PICKED UP The Don's Varsity Basketball team had a very successful year. Not only did they win their first Sam Gabriel Valley league Championship (11-1), but they returned to the C.I.F. playoffs for their first time in four years. Our M.V.P. and the scoring record holder was held by Joe Yezbak. The Don's played in three tournaments. The first w'as our own Cerritos-Gahr tournament, at which the Don’s lost to Valley Christian 53-51. Then they traveled to Chino, but also had the same results. The Dons lost the championship game to Bonita 53-52. After these minor disappointments, the Don's managed a consolation Championship up at Cabrillo winning Lompoc 76-45. Our well deserving M.V.P. Being the third year in CIF Playoff action, the Dons proved to be the strong ones. Through the help of Cass Selden, Jetf Kolodziej, Rob jones, and Tony Mendoza, tne Dons pitching force was nothing short of power. In the outfield Jim Osborn, John Vanderlinden, Jeff .Kolodziej, and Brian Dunn showed their fielding managibility in catching most of the balls hit to them. Wayne Walker, Cary Sloan, Wade Caron and Tony Mendoza made up the powerful infield and worked exceptionally well. And also don’t forget Steve Hunt, who saved those balls from getting to the backstop by playing catcher. The team record was 18-9 but, as for the high school record they will always be 1. 1. Jeff Kolodziej tied the batting record by going 5 for 5 which would have been 6 for 6 had not a super catch been made by the opposing team. (See Jeff, I remembered. Susan.) Rob Jones broke the pitching record for most innings pitched. He pitched 89 all together during the season. Steve Hunt broke three records all together. VARSITY CLUB New clubs start with new ideas and this year was no exception tor thefirst year of the Cerritos High School Varsity Club. This club had its beginnings when David Nowell, Commissioner of Athletics and Coach Vincent submitted an application on Club Day. The Varsity Club has certain requirements that must be met upon becoming a member. They include lettering in a Varsity sport, and attaining a certain G.P.A. Since Coach Vincent left Cerritos High School for another coaching job, the job of advisor was resumed by Coach Weeks. Together with their advisor, the Varsity Club President David Nowell, and the executive board, they were involved in various activities such as candy sales, concert bouncers, and the Sadie Hawkins Dance. This year was full of experimenting and new traditions for the Varsity Club. It this is any indication of what is to follow, the Varsity Club is sure to be one of the prestigious clubs on campus. It involved a lot of meetings, during school time, and after school hours. It involved traveling to competitions and doing well at them. Speech and Debate involved a lot of practice hours and hours spent writing and perfecting various speeches. All this would not be possible without the help and guidance of their advisor Mrs. Gordon. Advisor. Mrs. Gordon Speech and Debate Executive Board: President. Randy Oudega; Secretary. Cathy Roberts; Vice President. Laurie Watanatn Speech Debate 145 147 1986 The class of 86 began their first year at Cerritos High with excellent spirit and pride. They thought High School was fun and games, but what they didn't know there is work to be done. They have been a very spirited class, they have been very enthusiastic in class competition, basketball, football, and many various activities year round. They have had a successful flower sale, they have sold soft drinks at games and sold candy filled dishes. With the guidance of Mrs. Horrisk, the class of 86 will surely shine at Cerritos. rxiiy From right to left: Emily Yamaguchi. Carlene Boyle. His job was filled with many fun filled events. Some of whic were going to Football games, staff meetings, and helping students in general. We hope he has many more years to come with us Cerritos High School. 226 Principal The advisors of CHS were a strong force this year. Putting up with fights, complaints, teachers, and parents. Though they never put up with students (HA. HA) they eventually got to see and know each one ot us. Whether for detentions, grades, or class changes they tried their best to help. The students of CHS would like to wish them the best of luck in the years to come. Advisors 227 CHS faculty had a big problem. Putting up with spirited students! The teachers on the following pages are those few dedicated people, who put up with us on the cold rainy days, bad moods, pep rallies, spirit week, and lastly finals. So many stand out in our minds of the past years that we've put them all in a special place, such as they are special. We've put them here in the faculty section. I never realized how much work goes into making a yearbook until I became editor. The frustration and the craziness was well worth it. I would like to thank the faculty for their support and the people whose picture appears on the cover. I know it took a lot of time getting the picture together and I thank you for putting up with me. And to Mr. A., I would like to give a special thanks for all you did. You were always there when I needed you. Well I hope this yearbook will hold some very special memories in each heart. To all the Seniors, This book's for you!
