Ithough the 198182 Varsity Basketball team had a slow start, they came back strong in the second half of the season with hopes of going to the play-offs. They won their last five of seven games and with a play off position still in reach, the team played hard and conquered Downey. Lynwood, and Paramount. They then met with the Warren Bears. The Bears managed to beat the Dons in an exciting yet disappointing game. The team's playoff hopes were diminished, but they still looked forward to the last game of the season — crosstown rival Gahr. The team played great and overcame the Glads — great way to end the season. One outstanding player for the Dons was Joe Yezbak. The junior guard averaged 21.6 points a game and was chosen MVP. Other honors obtained by Joe were All-League First Team and All Southeast L.A. Times MVP. Darren Hall was chosen Most Improved. Team captain was Steve Sepulveda. 82 Sports Var. Boys' Basketball

J. V. B-ballers advance to semi-finals n the 1981 82 year, the basketball season found the J.V. B-ballers compile the best J.V. record in four years. The Junior Dons went into the Bell Gardens J.V. Tournament undefeated, including a close two point victory over a tough St. John Bosco team. The Dons advanced to the semi finals in the tournament and ended up finishing fourth in the sixteen team event. During the league season the team experienced some key victories and some close heartbreaking losses. They finished in league with a balanced seven win seven loss record while finishing the year with an overall record of thirteen wins and nine losses. During the year, Lennie Mayfield established a new Junior Varsity rebounding, record by grabbing 220 caroms. Tony Rolands hard play and court leadership earned him the team's Most Valuable Player award. I. Coach Chapel giving advice to the team. 2. Kelly Andrews skies for opening tip off. 3.
