Senior A wards Night ■■ ach year, there were always students who stood out above the rest. At Cerritos High the Ad ministration devised a way of ■r-J honoring these students. This was J an award at Cerritos that could not be compared to any other. It was one of (if not the) biggest honors a student could receive. This was the Escudo de Oro or Crest of Gold. The philosophy behind the award was that by grant ing this award, the Administration was providing a way to honor those students who represented the Ideal Cerritos High School Senior. The graduating seniors who received this award were required to have had a 3.0 grade point average in a minimum of seven semesters and have attended CHS for their last two years. The criteria for an Escudo de Oro winner was as follows: displays loyalty to the school, respects the rights of others, exhibits likeable personality. demonstrates good sportsmanship, contributes to the welfare of the school activities and also community activities. Faculty, coaches, and administrators were given a chance to nominate no more than ten students who they felt had met these requirements. Award committees then reviewed all nominations and made the final decisions. This year, seven achievers were granted with the title Escudo de Oro Winner. They were as shown above, Scott Harrison, Gentry Humphrey, Dan Kumamoto, Traci Tanaka, Vineeta Jha, Karen Davalos. and Lisa Hathaway. Each of these were well deserved. In addition to the Escudo de Oro, other awards were given on Senior Awards Night. Awards rang ing from perfect attendance to a $120,000 naval scholarship were given. Some of the awards were recognition for a job well done; as in the Commend able Effort and Class Spirit Award. Others were monetary awards like the Cal Grant. All in All, the Senior Awards Night was a very special evening honoring special people. Classes Senior Awards 145
