Of course, all our achievements cannot be enumer— ated here.We have spent four happy years of work and play, but we also have had our hardships and sorrows. Now, here is a brief sketch of our ad- vance from Freshmen, In the fall of 1937 we entered Ceres High School as Freshmen, starting a career entirely new to us. As Freshmen we were-Leon Atwell,Ralph Austin, Juanita Burke,Maxie Cox,Claude Dye, Billy Harner, Hope Harner, Ralph Hayton,Warren Hubble, Gladys Kidd, Janie McFarlane, Martha Neel, Wayne Neel, Lois Umbarger, Nancy Umbarger, and Nathan Winesett. We soon found ourselves starting a new year as Sophomores. We were proud of the title,Sopho- mores, but we regretted the loss of Claude Dye, Ralph Hayton, and Janie McFarlane. We welcomed eight new members to our class- Watson Bruce, Filmore Cassell, Herbert and Donald Cooper, Fred Foglesong, Florine Harner, Carrington Neel, and Herman Neel. The hardships of our sophomore year were soon accomplished and we were Juniors, regretting the loss of the following- Ralph Austin, Juanita Burke, Filmore Cassell, Maxie Cox, Billy Harner, Warren Hubble, Carrington and Wayne Neel, and Herman Neel. As Juniors we welcomed thirteen new members- Evelyn Cassell, Charles Compton, Harvey ‘Durham, Josephine GGroseclose, Bernice Harner, Catherine Harner, Harry Kemberlin, Harry King,Selma Kitts, Reba Lambert, Vida Neel,Wanda Scott, and Irmalene Young. During the first part of this junior year we suffered the dropping out of Charles Compton, Catherine Harner, Florine Harner, and Reba Lambert. We now realize how dear good Ole Ceres igh is to us.We express our thanks to the lid faculty who have been our helpers and lead through our High School days. We also wan thank the We regret to will not soon of the si GONE ARE THE DAYS Gone are the days, When we were so fresh and green; Gone are the days When as Sophs so wise did seem, Passed Junior heights, That will know us now no more, We hear the world now sternly calling, QO, Senior! We're coming, we're coming, See how things come our way, And all the world will soon Pass under Senior sway. Now come the days When we face the world so wide, To do our best, Then no matter what betide, Still we do sigh For the days that will come no more, Although the call we answer gladly, QO, Senior! ---G. L. C. SENIOR PROPHECY I have just received the Ceres Times.'Guess I had better see what the folks at home are doing. What's this! Why, that picture looks familiar. It's Hope Harner, President of the Senior Class of '41. She has just been appointed head nurse at Jefferson Hospital. She has received this position in view of her outstanding services during her career there. It also states here that she has announced her engagement to that promis- ing new doctor. Oh, look who is the bride today. Why it is Evelyn Cassell and the groom Luther Groseclose. Why, can you imagine that. Why, there is a list of the Bland County teachers. Let's see who is teaching at Ceres Hi. It's Nathan Winesett, principal. Gee, how I would love to slip in on him teaching French. Here's another one that looks familiar. Harry King, Agriculture. I'll bet those boys sure know how to grow corn now. Let's see the Star Flashes today. An unknown to Hollywood,Martha Neel, is another actress who is learning to fly. She has been taking lessons since December and gets delivery on her plane within the next few weeks. Why, sure I remember her. She was in so many plays in school. What is this on the editorial page. A column by Nancy Umbarger. Oh yes, the secretary of our senior class.I might have known she would become an author. Well, here's a picture of the famous dance a a aA Pe ae Oe ee ee ee Oe Ee ee Oe Oe Oe ar Od team that looks like Selma Kitts and Wanda Scott. That's who it is but it says here Kitts and Waddell. Why sure, Wanda just changed her name. Here's one for you.The new silk factory to be built in Ceres by Contractors Repass and Atwell will get all of its lumber from the Durham Lun- ber Company of Poor Valley. Those names’ sound familiar. Oh yes, Gladys Kidd, Harvey Durham, Orville Repass, and Leon Atwell; part of the graduating class of '41.My,they're going places. Here's a picture of the model farmer of Vir- ginia and would you _ believe it, it's Watson Bruce. Oh yes,he owns that big experimental farm in Ceres. The New York Giants plan an exhibition game in Ceres. Don Cooper shows home towners how to make a home run as well as pitch a good game. The Beeretary seers Kidd, states, Mr. and Mrs. Ohmer Wadde and Loewe of Maryland return to Ceres to live. Mrs. Waddell, the former Irma- lene Young was a member of the graduating class or ‘di, Miss Groseclose to address Home Economics class of Ceres. She was a member of the faculty of Emory and Henry College. She was also a mem- per of the graduating class of '4l. It seems that the faculty, Mr. Mitchell, Mr. Branscome, Mr. Rutrough, and Miss Jones and all other teachers have done their part in helping these students in selecting their careers. Me PS aa m4 Na Omi HISTORY OF SOPHOMO It is my pleasure to p ¢ i pan the Sophomore Class of l'! It was September 195 I ul day, radiant with hope, cheer, and j mi that the good ship Ceres High School at the warf of a new school year.It was the same old ship that had carried man passengers to safe harbor in the Land of Gre Wisdom. This was a glad day, for it was rumored as we stepped a- board that we were about to set sail over new and untried waters in quest of the Fountain of Perfect Understanding. As I was the first passenger to arrive, to me was intrusted the task of writing the narrative of the voyage and list the passengers as follows: Gwendolyn Burke, Alda Cox,Hleanor Crab- tree, Alvin Crabtree, Ruth Groseclose,Helen Han- shew,Gladys Harden, Vivian Harner, Donald Grose- close, Eula Mae Neel,Trula Neel, Naomi Umbarger, Billy Hubble, Erma Tibbs, Pauline Umbarger, and Thelma Williams. We were assured by the Captain that if we were persistant and deligent in our studies, we would reach our destination at the end of four years. Many delightful experiences and wonderful lessons closed our voyage in the Spring of '40, but we set sail again the following fall,welcom- ing to our crew Ida Groseclose and Marie Hubble. We have parted at various parts so we must not give the secrets of our shipmates away. We must not forget the loyalty due to our class colors flying at the masthead. The best history of any person or thing is never given to the world. So must it be with the Sophomores of '4l. In 1940 three members of the Ceres 4-H Club attended the state short course in Blacksburg. Gladys Kidd, the president of our club, was awarded the Thomas E. Wilson medal presented to the outstanding 4-H Club member in Bland County producing meat animals. The purpose of 4-H Club work is to stimulate interest among young people in the various phases of agriculture and area living. The progress of any 4-H Club is measured by the interest and act- ivities of its members. We feel that 1940 would not have been such a successful year had it not been for our Asst. County Agent, lir. Sam Buchanan. We also attribute a large part of the numerous achievements of our club to Miss Nell Hudson, our Club leader since the 4-H club was organized. “ wert , wi - wo _ my] Ve 2 ae , we - ) . = y . oy te PO Oe Oe ee ee ee ee ee ee ee ee CCl Se OF a ee Se Se ee GS Py Se BY ne a ee ee a ia “— by } 4 COLLECT A : Pay, Cg Se or Me Er ee a ae ee : a= Mek (ern - t fi . ——— .— 1 vi — te ay! =p ft 9 Pee SS ee ee ee ee ee ee ee tS P| G (: r ? All the boys have worked very hard to make the Ceres F. F. A. Chapter one of the best. We are indeed glad to belong to this great organization for farm boys. The F.F.A. Chapter set up several objectives to carry out during the year. We are carrying out a pig project which we hope to be a great success. Another way to raise money for the Chapter was to stage a play. This objective was carried out very successfully with boys. playing girls' parts, in Feudin' in the Hills . There are different purposes of an F.F.A. Chap- ter. Some of the outstanding ones is to train boys to be more capable on the farm by scientific farm- ing, another is to teach boys to buy and sell their products cooperatively.
