HI 'TORY OF THE CLASN OF 1955 7th Grade-The class of '55 flrst entered Ceredo-Kenova High School in 1949 with a staff of 160 eager but inexpe- rienced newspaper people. In our education here, we would be required to publish- six editions, all pertaining to life and how to live it. Our editor was Mr. Elmer Tabor who also had just come to the Good News Paper and so we would be his first staff of newsmen. We began as copyboys printing in the 7th grade our first edition. We began to seek our own phases of life in our flrst edition since some of us were interested in the society column while others sought the sports column, entertainment column, and even some liked the editorials and weather We selected two girls to be our queens for the society column, Jo Anne Tucker, Carnival Queen, and Mary Annese Bartram, Homecoming Queen. Now that we had all taken our places at various posts we completed our flrst edition. Sth Grade-Our second edition was much like the flrst only now we knew our way around the big plant and could more rapidly get our stories to press. We continued to learn more about our own columns and some of us even became junior reporters. Again we selected a queen. Janet Thompson who was Miss Ceredo-Kenova of 1950. In the entertainment column, our names were appearing in the Junior and Senior High Bands. And so we com- pleted our second edition. 9th Grade-Now we began our third edition and our last in Junior High School. The sports column was packed with names of our Junior High ball players. We saw our names in the entertainment column for the Senior High Band and Glee Club. Also new names appeared: Mary Rose and Mary Annese Bartram were selected as Senior High Cheerleaders while Jo Anne Tucker and Gladys Frazier were now majorettes. Our queen was Mary Rose. These editions were added features to the composite of the paper. The presses thus far were running smoothly, likewise the weather cooperated by being fair and warmer. Thus ended our third edition. 10th Grade-Our fourth edition was perhaps our newest and most exciting so far, for now our staff had advanced so none of us were copy boys or junior reporters any longer. Now we were permanently settled in our own departments and our names were frequent in all of the Good News. We added such activities as Thespians, Math Club, Latin Club, Future Teachers, Varsity Club, and Glee Club. The society column was overflowing with our names. Katie Riggs was our Homecoming Queen and we attended our first Thespian Banquet at the Hotel Frederick in Huntington. Carole Hodge, Sandra Clen- denin, and Linda Perdue were selected as Senior High Cheerleaders while Ruth Ann Webb and Katie Riggs were the new majorettes. So ended our fourth edition. llth Grade-Then we started printing our fifth edition, our junior year. This was a great thrill for now we were senior members of the staff and co-editors of the news- paper. We continued to by-line the columns as we added more names to the news. Our sports column was crammed with our names since now we were the Senior High teams. 10 Delores Spradlin was our Victory Queen and Carole Hodge our Thespian Queen for the Follies. Also many new honors were placed upon our shoulders. Some of us were now members of the National Honor Society while others became lettermen and prominent show people. The Thes- pians boasted a very active troop which consisted of three- fourths of our class. We presented plays at Morris Harvey College, Marshall College, and Indiana University, and appeared on local television and radio shows. Our class president was Harry Wilson, who presided at our Junior- Senior Banquet. Words could not describe our banquet that year. Everyone said that it was the best ever. Our theme was Colonial Days which was set of! by a minuet. A good time was had by all of the colonial ladies and southern gentlemen. We had lost many of our staff for various reasons. Some became disinterested, some moved away, and some changed their professions from a news- paper to the Navy, Air Force, and other things. Very reluctantly we completed our fifth edition. 12th Grade-And now we started the presses rolling for our sixth and final edition, our senior year. We headed the columns and no longer were we the by-lines, but, the headlines. Pat Houchin was our Homecoming Queen heading the society column, while Jim Hamer and Paul Dickerson topped the sports column by being co-captains for football season. For the first time in the history of Ceredo-Kenova every senior boy had the opportunity of being captain of the basketball team since each one was .assigned a special game. So we also added something new to the history of basketball. We were finally the editors, feature writers, and ace reporters. The president of our class for the third time was Harry Wilson, who had done such a good job in the 10th and 11th grades that the senior class choice was unanimous. This year we were the guests at the Junior-Senior Banquet and every- one again had a wonderful time. In the month of Febru- ary, we made a trip to Charleston, West Virginia, where we toured the capitol, saw the senate in session, and met the governor. During this time operations were also in order for financing a three-day trip to Washington, D. C. Our editor-in-chief was Mr. Tabor, who was assisted by his fine staff of teachers. We have finished our education in life here at Good News in Ceredo-Kenova, but we have really only begun learning about life. We all have yet to write our Big Stories and that we must each do individually without the assistance of our teachers and sponsors here. We think that our class is the best ever and each and every one of the 75 will, in his own way, headline his story and accomplish his or her ambition. We may not always.be celebrities in the news or the most famous but we will be adding our part whether it be setting the print or selling the papers. We may have our own newspaper but we shall continue to try to print only. Good News. We would like to thank the public, our parents, teachers, and sponsors who have so willingly cooperated by buying our copy, reading our stories, and financing our advertisements. At last the story is com- pleted, the presses have rolled, and the copies are on the street. The news boys are calling, Extra, extra! Read all about it: The Senior Class of Ceredo-Kenova High School of 1954-55 has just finished its flnal edition of 'Good News' and now is stopping the presses with this final headline and weather forecast for the future-'Fair and warmer, with occasional showers but many, many sunny days ahead'.
