Va. EDITOR-IN-CHIEF EDITDR IN CHIEF FACULTY ADVISOR ONCE UPON A TIME . . . . . . there existed in the most western part of the big little state of West Virginia, which is in the big country of the United States of Amer- ica, a little town by the name of Ceredog and close to this town, so close that you could stand upon both at the same time, was the town of Kenova. Together they made a wonderful little community. In the heart of this happy community was a large movie studio that dealt exclusively with the business of turning out professional actors. These actors were professional in the sense that they were taught to be well rounded by the varied education that they learned from their work in the studio, and they were taught how to apply their experiences to the future roles that they would play in life. The script writers of this studio, which was located in the green valley of the beautiful Ohio, daily produced endless reels of knowledge. The reels were endless since knowledge has no end, what is learned is continued or added to. To the many students who were busy trying to absorb this knowledge, these script writers and critics were among the best that could be found in the whole world, for there was not one group of people anywhere else who wished to help these struggling actors more than they. The director of this happy studio was Elmer Tabor. He was a man who possessed the rare quality of both liberality and firmness, and the two mixed together made him a very good and a very well-liked principal. He has directed the business of this bustling studio with sound judg- ment, and its workers should repay him by turn- ing out even better movies. And for the tale of this studio . . . DEDICATIO 12 A . MRS. RUTH STOCKTON SUTHERLAND Because of her unfailing devotion to her job as the Heraldus Staff adviser and as the adviser of the Sentinel Staff, because of her happiness in par- ticipating in community activities, because of her willingness to lend her talents whenever they may be needed, and because of her modest wish to keep behind the scenes, we take pride in dedicating this Heraldus of 1954 to Mrs. Ruth Stockton Sutherland. We were all a little scared and worried. In the seventh grade we were always late for our classes, doing the right thing but at the wrong time. It was a hard year but we soon pulled through. As our second year at Ceredo-Kenova began, we felt a little better and a little wiser. We were not scared any more and began to feel a sense of responsibility. We had to study hard but we made it. When we were freshmen, we were allowed to elect class officers to show us the right way. We chose Richard Perry, president, and Ronnie Lester, vice president. To make our place in Ceredo-Kenova a little better, Janie Plymale was chosen majorette and also to represent the freshman class as beauty queen. Thus our third year at Ceredo-Kenova ended. In our sophomore year we chose Judy Mich- els, president, Richard Perry, vice president, Balford Shulick, secretary, and Judie Peters, treasurer. This year some of the boys made the football team. They did a line job. We put on our first play, Sing for Your Supper, which was a great success. Reba Akers was elected to represent our class as beauty queen, thus another year at C-K ended. As our junior year began we felt very big and important. We elected Robert Johnson, president, Gerald Abrams, vice president, Reba Akers, secretary, and Marjorie Davis, treasurer. Our play, Strange Boarders, kept everyone laughing and guessing at the outcome. Reba Akers was chosen majorette and Mildred Dean was chosen beauty queen. Our Junior-Senior Banquet was a great success with everyone having a grand time. We were now entering our last year at Ceredo- Kenova. To show us the way we chose Amos Maynard, president, C. J. Frazier, vice pres- ident, Balford Shulick, secretary, Loretta Evans Gallion, treasurer, James LeMaster, historian, and Ronnie Lester, chaplain. In the sports world we had three outstanding players, Bal- ford Shulick, Bobby Adams, and Richard Perry made the first team on the All South-Western Conference squad. We wish to thank our sponsors, Mrs. Pifer, Mrs. Yates, and Mr. Queen, for their patience, kindness, and guidance during our high school days. .T THE M IN CAST JW THESE IORSOFI954 0 y resident AMOS LEE MAYNARD Swede Personality plus, a smile to boot. he's not only fun but also cute. SPORTS The pages you are about to view and read contain a brief summary of the thing which binds together the students of a school into an even uniformity of spirit and co-operation. This thing is Athletics. Athletics, in general, is the element necessary to keep a school banded together as a unit. It will build school spirit, leadership, morals, character, and sports- manship. Sports will build a sound mind and body and induce clean living and healthful thinking to anyone who is willing to partici- pate. Sports are as old as man himselfg they have existed down through the ages-through times of war and peace, plenty and famine- and they will continue to exist as long as mankind-somewhere, anywhere on the face of the earth-can take time out from fighting his fellow man and find time to play. ,r-I is onli' . i K A N r sl A 1 Tri-captain Bob Adams lTackle3 Tri-captain Amos Maynard Tri-captain Richard Perry fBackl CTackleJ ' Head Coach Albert Babe Mazza Assistant Coach Carl Chadwick 50 The Ceredo-Kenova Wayne Wonders of the 1953 football season were ball players who were well schooled and trained in the arts of sportsmanship and the will to win by their coach, Albert Babe Mazza.- The men of Wonderland, led by Tri-captains Amos Maynard, Bob Adams, and Dick Perry, were ranked second in the state in class A schools at the end of the season by the Beckley Post-Herald. Altogether the Wonders were victorious five times, defeated three times, and tied once. The Wonders can proudly doff their helmets to Head Coach Mazza and Assistant Coach Carl Chadwick. Ceredo-Kenova 0 I-luntington East 20 The Wonders took the field 'at Fairfield Stadium slightly damaged by the loss of one of their best forward men, Pat Riggs, starting guard, who was declared ineligible a few days before the game. How- ever, this did not cause the Wonders to lose spirit or fight. The first quarter went scoreless with both teams putting on extended drives. East hit paydirt twice in the second quarter to gain a 13-0 lead over the Won- ders. The first half ended with Ceredo-Kenova on the East one foot line. In the second half a fumble paved the way for the third Highlander score. C-K, although pounding out 10 first downs, could not cross the double stripes and thus went down to a scoreless defeat. Ceredo-Kenova 14 Sherman Tide of Seth 7 Mazza's men met the big Sherman Tide on the Won- ders' home field the night of September 25. The first quarter of this hard-fought ball game went scoreless as neither team could seem to gain an advantage over the other. However, early in the second quarter the Wonders broke the ice by uncorking a pass from Buck Dawson to end Bob Ferguson that covered 25 yards for a touchdown. Pat McFann booted the extra. The Wonders soon tallied again when Dawson went over from the ten after the C-K team put on an extended drive. Late in the third quarter the Sherman Tide bounced back fighting and drove over for a score and then added the extra point. In the fourth quarter the two teams seemed once again to gain their equal balance and the quarter ended scoreless. Another victim of the Wonders! Ceredo-Ke-nova 7 Logan 18 The Wonders suffered their second loss of the season as they were defeated by the Logan Wildcats on the Wonders' home field. The Wonders scored only once in the game as the Logan defense was very alert. The Wildcats scored once on a fumble by the Wonders which was picked up by a Logan defensive back. A fieet Logan back scampered loose for a sixty yard jaunt in the third quarter to put the Wonders farther behind. The Wildcats tallied again in the fourth quarter to wrap up the victory. Ceredo-Kenova 26 Matewan 6 Shortly before the opening gun, a thriving mass of green and white poured through the locker room door and on to the field with only one thought-Win! The Wonders' smooth running attack proved too much for the visitors as C-K piled up 15 first downs to 5 for Matewan. Clyde Salmons scored twice for the Won- ders with Buck Dawson and Bob Ferguson sighting up the scoreboard for 6 points each. Back Ivan McGlone broke into the scoring column by making a behind- the-goal tackle for an extra 2 points. The game ended with the Wonders still hard pressing the Matewan visitors. Ceredo-Kenova 18 Williamson 7 The Wonders packed their uniforms the afternoon of October 2 and made the journey to Williamson to meet the Williamson Wolfpack on their own home field. In the first quarter the Pack drew first blood as they scored on a pass covering 34 yards from Maynard to Neal. In the second period the Wonders came back with a score of their own by Salmons, but the extra point fell short. At the half the score remained C-K-6-- Williamson-7. In the third quarter the Ceredo-Kenova team crossed the double stripes again as Dawson pass- ed to Shulick, who lateraled to Salmons on a nicely executed play which netted the Wonders another six points. The Wonders wrapped it up in the fourth quarter on another pass from Dawson to Ferguson into the end zone. And a good time was had by all! Ceredo-Kenova 14 Man 14 The Wonders tallied first in the first period as Tri- captain Dick Perry smashed through from his own six yard line. McFann toed over the extra point. The second quarter went scoreless as neither team could break the defense of the other. The third quarter opened with a bang as the Wonders put on an ex- tended drive needing only ten yards to score when a fumble by the Wonders was picked up by a Man player who sped ninety yards for a score. The game- tying score came in the fourth quarter when Man put on a drive covering fifty yards for the score. 51 Ceredo-Kcnova 17 Catlettsburg 19 The Wonders suffered a two point defeat at the hands of the invading Kentuckians. The Wildcats of Catlettsburg scored touchdowns in each of the first three quarters. The only score thus far was by Neil Stough, who kicked a field goal in the first quarter. On the bottom half of a 19-3 score, the Wonders drove 60 yards for a touchdown with Dawson lugging the pigskin over from his own two yard line. The extra point by McFann made it Wildcats-19, Wonders-10. With only short minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Wonders crashed to the Cats' twenty-five yard line and Dawson tired a pass to Shulick for a score. Mc- Fann's extra made the final score 17 to 19. Ceredo-Kenova 13 Vinson 7 The Wonders downed the Vinson Tigers on the C-K field on the night of October 30. Ceredo-Kenova scored first in the opening period on a pass from Dawson to Shulick. The extra point try failed. Vinson tied the score in the same period on a short pass. Another pass to Bob Ferguson advanced the ball to the two yard line. Perry blasted over for the score and Stough added the extra. The whole second half went score- less as both teams made no extensive drives. Ceredo-Kenova 32 Wayne 12 The Wonders traveledlto Wayne for the last game of the season to dampen the Wayne Pioneers' spirits by a humbling defeat. Dawson scored once in the first quarter on a hard drive by the Wonders with McFann adding the extra point. Spurlock tallied for the Pioneers late in the first quarter. With only five seconds remaining in the Hrst half, the Wonders punched over another score as Dawson slipped through again for another six. In the third quarter Clyde Salmons hit pay dirt for C-K on a nice run. Wayne scored the second and last touch- down in the period as the Wonders tightened their defense. Perry scored in the final period on a pass as did end Bob Ferguson, who found himself all alone on his own 20 yard line with the ball sailing toward him. Pick- ing off the nice pass from Dawson, he scored easily. Mazza's men were victorious. C. J. Frazier added the extra point after touchdown. 1 1 Ceredo-Kenova High School Football Squad First Row, left to right: Gene McGlone, Paul Dickerson, Buck Shulick, George Spears, Tommy Pasquale, Alfred Hatten, Dan Cox, Ronnie Smith, Amos Maynard, John Staley. Maynard. In the preceding summaries you have probably noticed that the only names mentioned were -backfield men. These backfield men are the ball carriers 'of a football team. But in all due respect to the hard-working back- field, let us not forget the equally hard-working line men. These are the players who seldom hit the spotlight, but are ever-important cogs in the wheel of a team. These are the men seldom remembered by the spectator be- cause they are not ball carriers. lt might be interesting to note that two of Ceredo-Kenova's three tri-captains, Amos L. Maynard and Bob Adams, are linemen who occupied the left and right tackle positions respectively, and who always did their job along with the rest of the linemen to bring their team home victorious. 1 I l !, 7 ,il 71 K af ge-, 5, F JOHN STALEY Tackle BALFORD SHULICK End '11 Ri NEIL STOUGH - Tackle On this page you see seven seniors who, along with Tri-cap- tains Bob Adams, Amos L. May- nard, and Richard Perry, have given their all for the Green and White of Ceredo-Kenova for the last time. These seniors, many of whom are three and four-year men, have played the last game of their high school careers. They will not be forgotten as time passes by, but will be remembered as members of that select group which participates in athletic ac- tivities for the good of their school. In the years to come when high school days are far behind, these men will not be lacking in youtha ful memories of many past con- tests in which they have given and taken as fate would have it.
