We hope this contest will become an integral part of the Centre yearbook. Five nominees were chosen by a committee composed of the six fraternity presidents and the women’s class presidents. Basis for selection were in this order: general school spirit, activities, personality, and appearance. We were proud that five outstanding senior girls were nominated. These were Miss Frances Lambert, Miss Trecia Roberts, Miss Marian Strange, Miss Sue Treadway, and Mrs. Donna White. A queen and two attendants were chosen by a campus¬ wide election. The results can be seen on the following pages. I 119 When the 1958 Centre Colonels football team reported to head coach, Joe Brummett on September 1st for pre-season drills, every¬ one was more optimistic about the club for the coming season. The 1957 squad gradu¬ ated only two starters, Phil Fritz and Roland Kimberlin. Against tougher competition the Big Gold improved on the 1957 record, compiling a 5-3 slate in 1958. Injuries and lack of depth throughout the season repeatedly hurt the squad ' s chances of posting an even better record. Fortunately only three seniors were on the team, co-captains Keith Myers, Jim Morris, and Dave Ray. Their losses will be deeply felt; however, the general outlook for the 1959 season seems to be good. CENTRE 7—WILMINGTON 6 Bill McKee ' s extra point conversion proved to be the difference as the Colonels and Quakers battled on even terms in the season opener. The game was marred by a torrential downpour which set up a great number of fumbles. In all, there was some 22 fumbles during the contest. Centre scored their only T. D. when halfback, Dave Ray went 9 yards on an end sweep midway in the 2nd period. CENTRE 12—MARYVILLE 7 The Big Gold posted their 2nd consecutive win of the season. Centre scored on the open¬ ing series of plays as Dave Ray climaxed a 71-yard drive with a cross buck over left _guard. Maryville came back to score on a freak play around right end that covered 10 yards. With Maryville leading 7-6 in the 4th quarter, Centre rolled up 62 yards in 8 plays for the winning tally. CENTRE 27—WASHINGTON LEE 8 Centre, led by halfback Dave Ray, played their finest game of the season. After this victory the Colonels were the only undefeated team remaining among Kentucky Colleges. The Colonels jumped ahead 20-0 at the end of the first half on T. D. ' s by Alexander and Ray. Ray ' s 2nd score was a 67-yard run. 120 CENTRE 7—SOUTHWESTERN 6 Again the magic toe of Bill McKee proved to be the margin of victory. The Lynx scored the first time they had their hands on the ball, but Centre retaliated with a drive to pay dirt late in the 2nd quarter. Colonels came out strong in the 2nd half and increased their lead to 20-0 on touchdown runs by Gene Tassie and Kern Alexander. Late in the game the Panthers scored two times, but there wasn ' t enough time remain¬ ing for them to over the Colonel lead. CENTRE O-GEORGETOWN 13 After four straight victories. Centre finally tasted defeat at the expense of arch rival Georgetown. The Tigers, boasting one of their best teams in the school ' s history, took a 6-0 lead midway in the 2nd quarter when half¬ back, Jack Massie plowed over from one yard out. Late in the game Centre penetrated deep into Tiger territory and lost a good scoring chance when a Huber to Day aeriel was inter¬ cepted by Tiger fullback, Bill Wilson. CENTRE 20—HANOVER 13 The Colonels gained revenge here Home¬ coming by bumping Hanover 20-13. Last year the Panthers defeated the Big Gold 26-19 at Hanover. Centre scored first midway in the initial period on a 17 yard sweep by half¬ back, Gene Tassie. Hanover threatened late in the first half, but the clock stopped their drive on the Centre one-yard stripe. The CENTRE 0—SEWANEE 20 The Official ' s time piece proved to be fatal as the Tigers of Sewanee held Centre scoreless for a 20-0 win. Two of Sewanee ' s T. D. ' s were scored with only 49 seconds re¬ maining on the clock. Centre started a drive early in the 2nd half, but a 15 yard holding penalty deprived their chances of hitting pay dirt. CENTRE 16—BLUFFTON 19 Centre ' s last half drive fell a little short of a victory. Trailing 19-0 at the end of the first half, Coach Brummett ' s squad got organ¬ ized and with 7 minutes 1 1 seconds remain¬ ing on the clock they were behind only 19-14. At this point Bill McKee tried an on-side kick; however, it resulted in a long gain for Bluffton as they carried the ball to the Centre 20 yard stripe. The Colonels tightened up with 4 minutes left Don Huber passed to Mark Day. Bluffton stopped the drive as the game ended. 121 Seated: Coach, Briscoe Inman; Dick Swigart, Dave York, Ronnie Simmons, Bill Kazee, Bill Rafferty, Bob Eveleth; Head Coach, Joe Brummett. Basketball Coach Brummett was somewhat skeptical of his team ' s chances as the 1958-59 season opened. His two tallest players had gradu¬ ated, leaving quite a gap to be filled in the center position. To offset this lack of height. Coach Brummett attempted to solve the problem by installing a different style offen¬ sive play. The team finished with 7 wins against 14 losses; this record was indeed respectable considering the plight of Brummett with height problem. For the 4th consecutive year senior guard and captain Bill Kazee was named to the All KIAC Tournament Team. In his four years at Centre he compiled 1388 points, highest in school history. Helton and George Rush led in rebounding with 195 and 175 respectively. Next year Coach Brum- mett loses only one player, Kazee. While this will be a great loss, the team ' s chances of compiling an even better record in the 1959-60 season seem to be greater. 123 Kneeling: Kern Alexander, Ken Brumback, Jerry Stewart, Bill Kazee, Ray Kaelin, George Rush, Norman Youtsey, Roger Duffett. In the KIAC meet, Dave picked up 20 of the team ' s 21 points with wins in the broad jump, Discus, and Shot Put. He took 2nd in the 220 and placed 3rd in the 100. Grissom heaved the shot put 45 ' 3W ' to establish a new mark in that event. In Grissom ' s 3 years at Centre he has amassed 358 points, far superior to any other Centre trackman in school history. In addition to Dave, freshman, Max Mascarich stood out also. With the exception of Grissom, Max picked up more points than anyone else on the team. During the 10 days they won 2 matches and lost 3. Centre ' s over¬ all record for the year was 9-6. Two of the losses in Kentucky were to Bellarmine and a Tennis close defeat at the hands of Kentucky. The season came to a climax when the Colonels won the KIAC doubles championship for the 2nd straight year. This year ' s combination in¬ cluded John English and Jean Kraft.
