S. clubs formed this year was the Pep Club sponsored by Miss Dorothy Holston. Responsible for the school spirit at basketball and football games, the club members held a Weiner roast and dance at the first of the year. The Choral Club, under' the leadership of Miss Madeline Goetz, started off the year to the tune of skating and choraling parties, and held several other parties and potlucks in the home of the members. A dance sponsored by Miss Dorothy Mitch- ell's, Future Business Leaders of America was the first project of the year. Other activities included a field trip to the telephone office, a potluck, and selling folders, another money- making project. The artistic members of C. T. H. S. formed an Art Club sponsored by Miss Evelyn Brehm, The members and their friends visited the St. Louis Art Museum to view the Berlin Master- pieces. The language clubs-Latin, French, and Spanish-under the leadership of Misses Helen Stevens and Wilma Hutton, united for a trip to the St. Louis Art Museum to view the Berlin Masterpieces also. The Latin club held a pot- luck at the first of the year, and the Spanish and French club held a joint party which fea- tured an imitation of Carmen Miranda. The home economics department had sev- eral clubs, including the Advanced Foods Club and Home Living Club. The clubs had several parties and took a field trip to the telephone office. Sports provided the main activities for the Girls' Athletic Association sponsored by Miss Dorothy l-lolston. The club held a Weiner roast and dance to start off their year. WQLGL now has a new look. Under the leadership of Mr. Marvin Wyatt, the Badio Club installed the new phone transmitter in a neat rack, and the transmitter is entirely controlled by relays. The club has tried to promote amateur radio and engineering through efforts in club activity at school. The purpose of the F. F. A. is to teach the boys modern farming methods. Mr'. Claride, whose leadership and knowledge have been indispensable to the boys, is the sponsor. HHDIU First Row: Ft. Marcum, C. Schnake, B. Howe, F. Nichols. Second Row: I. Fortli, F. Giboney, R. Second Row: Freddy Besant, Bill Morgan, Ierry Oshel. The l948 C. T. l-l. S. football season, judged in terms of scores, was rather unsuccessful. But as far as real football ability goes, this year's Orphans made an excellent showing. This inexperienced team finished the season with four wins and five losses. The Troutmen rolled up one hundred ten points to their opponents one hundred eleven. Coach Trout started early in the season with only three veterans returning from the 1947 power eleven. Quarterback Bill Morgan, end Grover Burris, and guard Alden Ray made up the building blocks for the '48 gridders. Although their record is not exceptionally impressive, the team consisted of several out- standing players. ln the line Alden Ray and Harold Baker did powerhouse work ripping through opposing lines and opening wide holes e482 C' for the unique V-8 formation backfield. Left halfback Bill Rush, high scorer for the Orphans, and Bill Morgan, offensive captain, turned in shining performances in carrying the pigskin. Grover Burris' kicking leg played an important role in every Orphan game. All of these boys received honorable mentions on various All- State teams. Harold Bakers outstanding per- formances on defense brought him the right guard position on the third team of the official All-State roster. The outlook for the next year is very bright. Coach Trout's entire reserve team consisted of juniors and sophomores. Gene Reynolds, Earl Carter, leffie Woods, Bob Lambert, and Bobbie Adams are expected to see plenty of action on the l949 edition of Orphan gridders. THUUTIHEH! . ., fzklglfgfi Vi . IHHHHGEHS BHSHETBI-Ill SUUHU The 1948-49 Centralia basketball team will long be remembered as a quintet that was cold as ice one game and hot as fire the next. Their record was fifteen wins and twelve losses. The Orphans of the Storm advanced as far as the final game of the sectional tournament at Mt. Vernon before being trodden underfoot by the powerful host team. Coach Tr'out's boys were always feared by their foes because of the remarkable playing that was so evident in several of their games. A serious disadvantage to this year's team was the lack of height, which affected their rebounding ability. The Orphans were sparked offensively by Bob Nickolaus' sharp shooting eye and Gene Flagg's faking dribble-in. Captain Bill Morgan and ferry Oshel did outstanding work as defensive plugs for the Orphans. Gazing into the crystal ball, we can look upon an experienced team for the 1949-50 season led by other stalwarts: Dick Smith, lim Parkinson, Harvey Welch, and Boy Lee Locke. Bill Morgan and ferry Oshel were the only two graduating players off this year's squad. Sitting, left to right: I. Oshel, G. FCIQQ. B. Nickalous, R. Smith, B. Morgan, I. Parkinson, M. Spurgeon, H. QC 582- 1948 THHCH HECUHI1 Although Centralia lost her first Dual or Triangular Meet in six years to Belleville last season, this loss did not dampen their spirits, they later won all the other meets until the state meet. Among these were the following: Mineral Area Championships at Hurst-Bush, Herrin Relays, West Frankfort Relays, South Six Conference, and Granite City District. Evers' cindermen were generally recognized as Southern lllinois Champions. Archie Reynolds, Bob 1-larrison, Bill Mor- gan, and lohn Wilson ran the half mile relay in 1133.7 which is an all time C.T.l-l.S. record and probably the outstanding performance of the season. lohn Wilson made a new C.T.1-l.S. record for' the 100 yard dash, time :l0.1, and broadjumped consistently over 21 feet. A new school record in the high hurdles, Which wasn't beaten until the state meet, was set by Bob Harrison. Archie Reynolds set a new conference meet record in the 100 yard dash of :10.3. Vai Dean McFarland, lack Kell, l-larry Pick, and Roy Lambert set a new 2 mile relay record at the West Frankfort relays of 81345. This was judged the best 2 mile relay mark in the state last year, Don Cerny, who was undefeated in the pole vault until he got to the state meet, set a new Mineral Area Meet record and was consistently over 1l feet. Consistent point winners were the follow- ing: Bill Morgan, shotput, lim Parkinson, pole vault, Bob Nickolaus, high jumpg Wm. Cun- ningham, high jumpg Wm. Locke, and lerry Oshel, 440 yard rung Malcolm Bryant, broad- jumpg lack Woolbright, Discus. Malcolm Bryant made a good showing at state by placing 5th in the broadjump.
