Way back last September we entered C. T. H. S., almost three-hundred bewildered and confused freshmen. We started off right by electing Bobby Sprehe and Russell Stringham as our class officers. We chose Miss Peterson and Mr. Evers for our sponsors. We are proud of our A students, among Whom are Fay Branch, Connie Meek, Frank Nichols, Iackie Remacle, and Elizabeth Sanders. ln the music department We are represented by Sue Coates, Who is a Well-known majorette, and also represents our class as oz cheer leader. Although only freshmen, a few of our members gained some recognition in athletics. These included Bob Lambert, Dick Smith, and Wally Smith. After dropping their first game to Ioliet, the Troutmen finished their remain- ing schedule undefeated. They played a powerful Benton team to a scoreless tie. Their record of four victories and one tie Was good enough for the conference title. They scored 117 points against 33 for their opponents and in 5 of their 9 games were unscored upon. They averaged nearly 5 yards per' carry i-n racking up 1768 yards on the ground. Spearheading Trout's unique V-8 formation was Charles Pig'f Oland who was named a first team All-State fullback. Center Stan Holtkamp was chosen to the second All-State team. 44 54 X Q? J ll my 4' . ,V of . ' Y L, , :- I I' ., l Mft , .VIA l,l ' ' 41' t j J .J ., . 1 . if . F ,J 1 I , 'll aj' 1-I . fl. Handicapped by their lack of height the Orphans were constantly the underdogs in most of their games throughout the season. It was not until the final game of the regional tourna- ment that people realized their real capabilities in spite of their short stature. Playing' a much taller and highly favored Salem team, Centralia played a practically flawless game to come awaywith a decisive 58-50 victory and a berth in the sectional tournament. ln the first game of the tourney the Orphans subdued the Mt. Vernon Rams 52-47. Then in the sectional finals the Troutmen lost a heartbreaking 40-39 decision to Pinckneyville. The Panthers then Went on to Win the state championship. All through the tournament no team came closer than five points to Pinckneyville, so the Orphans had the moral conso- lation, if not the nominal title, of being the second best team in the state. Coached by A. L. Trout and his assistant, lirnmie Evers, the Centralia teatcn captured the South Six conference championship for the second straight year. Four of the starting five, Freddy Schlichtman, ferry Wilson, Corky Locke, and Iohnny Wilson, will graduate this year, leaving Bill Morgan and Gene Flagg as promising hopefuls for the nucleus of next year's team. cc 602 VK Basketball B Squad Seated: lulius Vaughn, Ronald Wimpey, Harvey Welch, Gene Reynolds, Dick Pierson, Don Dueker, loe Burge, Emory Mockbee. Standing: Mgr. Schnake, Waymon Heard, Carl Brown, Charles Kline, Sammy Buffat, lim Taxman, Eddie Bonner, lack Wueller, Dick Wham, Maurice Green, Coach Evers. The Centralia B squad of 1947-48 pulled a big surprise out of the bag by finishing the season with a record of 17-7. Coach Iirnmy Evers was very much astonished as he didn't expect the team to win half of their games. Stellar center Dick Pierson led the team in scoring with 149 points. The diminutive forward Ronald Wimpey, finished second by scoring 133 tallies. The two Lambert brothers, Boy and Bob, finished third and fourth in scoring With 114 and 89 respectively. Donald Dueker scored 81 points to finish fifth in scor- ing. Gene Reynolds scored 70 points for -sixth place. Pierson, Wirnpey, Roy Lambert, Reynolds and Bob Lambert composed the first team most of the year, but Bob Lambert gave Way to Donald Dueker later in the season. cc61bb 'SI 41-.- Tezitf-L' !tg..4.V. .Pj-LQ! . as 1 . They added pep and enthusiasm to the sports events and played in concerts including one for the teachers' meeting in St. Louis this spring. The excellent marching band was led by Iack Coates, our twirler extraordinary. The strutting majorettes included Mary Kindell, Bonnie Broeker, Iean Ames, Beverly Iohnston, and Sue Coates. Band officers for the year were Iack Coates, pres.p Bob Ferguson, vice- pres., Errnogene George, sec.-treas., Phyllis Franke and Connie Brand, librarians. Mr. Pike The band owes much of its excellence to the patience and splendid instruction of their di- rector, Mr. Pike. The band has steadily im- proved in the few years he has taught here. ,-f'- 4472s C. T. H. Mixed Chorus Short row in iront: M. York, M. Smith. First Row: B. Dodillet, I. Heape, D. Miller, E.
