The greenest crop of freshmen Has just landed on our grounds, St. Patrick sure would rub his eyes, He'd swear it Was a dream. Ne'er had he seen his colors gay So dominate a scene. No law can keep the freshman From our campus or our halls, But law can make the freshman stay Although he Wails and bawls. So just sit tight and look aloof, Above all, be serene, And Watch the faculty take turns A' polishing the green. -Betty Pitt, '46 14 tf CA Q? om? How green was our Oswald lim Tillman Charles Oland Donald Cerny Secretary-Treasurer President Vice-President CLASS QF V18 Fourth spot on YOUR SPHINX HlT PARADE was held down by us tenors, three-hundred and twenty Freshmen, once naive and inexperienced, but nom' very wise in the ways of the musical world. Early in our career we got off to a very smooth start by choosing Charles Oland, Donald Cerny, and lim Tillman to direct us, and Miss Huck and Mr. Ahrens to be our arranger-sponsors. Marching along in the All-Time Hit section of YOUR SPHINX HIT PARADE were Donald Cerny, lohnny Wilson, and Charles Oland. In the course of one short year, Charles became a well-seasoned, as well as an outstanding, athlete. Our fellow classmen who ranked among those with a high musical l. Q. were Mary Lou Cover, Phyllis Franke, Iohn Spaeth, Charles Tate, and fohn Zinkus, all of whom were straight-A students in the first semester. Freshman accompanists to the May Queen were lovely Helen Riley and Melba Beckmeyer. Although we were not sufficiently experienced to have important jobs on the Publishing and Composing staffs, several of us worked most diligently in preparing copy for both the newspaper and yearbook. Now, after completing nine months of work as Freshmen, we are looking forward with a song on our lips to a second year more glorious than the first. 15 m TE ORSJW it if A V l Iames Adams 3 i .2 g 'E 'Q 'W A i . After we had emerged, still singing, from the Freshman class, we accomplished many worthwhile things. Under the leader- ship of Keith Stalcup, Mary Wham, and Forrest Sprehe, an up-and-coming trio of our class, and with the help of our class arrangers, Miss Merz and Mr. Smith, we grew up and no longer sang the kiddish songs of our youth, but vocalized on the more sophisticated tunes of the upper classmen. Representing our class in the All-Time Hits were athletes Don Fearheiley, Arnold Gluck, Dean Manns, Kenneth McBride, Bill McDonal, Harry McDowell, and Bill McKain. Those among us who had a high musical I. O. for the first semester were straight-A students Robert Chambers, Freda Curry, Sherman Doolen, Merle Drenckpohl, Iackie Goff, Iohn Gore, Margaret Harting, Betty I-Iofstetter, Vir ginia Lee, Annette Linkon, Charlotte Miller, Donald Parkinson, Mary Perrine, Forrest Sprehe, Edwin Stanford, Elizabeth Wham, and Ioan Whitchurch. Yes, we could boast of far more names in this group than any other class in school. Our Sophomore Publishers of YOUR SPHINX HIT PARADE included Mar cella Felchlia, third-page editor, Bobby Ford, assistant first-page editor, and Mary Wham, feature editor of The Sphinx newspaper. Shirley Deabler and Ieannine Geary, pretty members of our group, were chosen by popular vote to accompany the May Queen. We also displayed much musical ability. Some of our outstanding Hswingstersu were Bob Burgess, Pauline Brinkman, Loudine Brinkman, Keith Stalcup, Mary Lou Kendall, and Sue Cain. Betty Iune Sissom and Ioanne Bryant were our high-stepping Sophomore majorettes, who performed along with the band, and petite Marilyn Wool- bright was our contribution to the cheer-leading squad. And so we say farewell to the laughter and the joy, to the tears and the troubles of our experiences that have brought us this far on the way to the top of YOUR SPHINX HIT PARADE, ' I 23 9 'l ,rn fl I Refnemouz QW 04514. Helping to put us in this position were Colin Anderson, Ed Furgerson, Theodell Crane, and Ellen Scott, our class officers. To most of us the prom loomed as the major chord of the year. ln order to make this event a harmonious one, many of us helped to fill the coffers of the class by selling refreshments to the sports fans. While some of us were engaged at the games in this fashion, Bonnie Smith led the other cheer leaders in spurring our teams on, and Pat Seibel and Margie Stater performed with the other majorettes. Pat was also junior chairman of Everygirl's. Wanda Branch and Frances fones were the attractive attendants chosen from our class to accompany the May Queen. Trudging along in athletic form in the All-Time Hit Parade were Colin Anderson, I. B. Clarida, Ed Furgerson, Bill Geilhausen, Bob Klostermann, Harold Rush, Don Schnake, and Fabian Schifferdecker. Royce Steinmann, news editor of The Sphinx newspaper, and Harleen Simmons, business manager, were our contribution to the Publishing staff of YOUR SPHINX HIT PARADE. Our talented musicians who gained popularity with the Reveliers in- cluded Pete Brown, Charles Kline, Russell Mitchell, and Iimmie Ioan Reed. Many of us also had a wide knowledge of musical facts. George Chen- iae, Marylene Cunningham, Mary Lou Gordon, Betty fo Hite, Charles Kline, Caroline Merritt, lames Oldfield, Betty Pitt, Norma Ieane Prudent, Eunice Rix- man, and Royce Steinmann, were all straight-A students for the first semester. Through the guidance of Miss Cottrell and Mr. Evers and their assistants, Miss Thelma Phillips, Miss Starkey, Mr. Clarida, and Mr. Stevenson, we were able to hold our second place. But we won't stop herel With our usual enthusiasm we shall go singing along, hoping to hit first place next year. 3l -. m ALTO m V Phyllis Adams ,V Vt VA V H . .'.. JIL- 4 r das s After four hard years of toil. Oswald graduates Albert Opolka Harry Broughton Iim McKee Dolores Thomas Secretary Vice-President President Treasurer CLASS DF ,115 ln first place and in the spotlight on YOUR SPHINX HIT PARADE was the Senior class, swinging along with a steady beat towards the grand finale, proud to carry the bass to our ever-complicated medley of work and play. Glenn Bischof and Shirley Lee, Student Body officers, were chosen from our group as singing stars of the entire choir: our senior chorus was led by fim McKee, Harry Broughton, Albert Opolka, and Dolores Thomas, class officers, and by Miss Peterson and Mr. Brasel, sponsors. The All-Time Hit Parade of CTHS was high-lighted by the work of Cyril DeLay, Harry Broughton, Bob Hutchison, lim McKee, Harry fackson, Al- bert Opolka, Vincent Phillips, lohn Rogers, Gene Topper, and Bob Turnbow, our star athletes. Cheering these boys on were energetic Freddie Barnes and Connie Meador, our representatives on the cheer-leading squad. ln regal splendor and in a spotlight all her own was Barbara Niemann, our beautiful May Queen. She was accompanied by charming Patty Trout and Mary Belle Westman, both of whom added tone to this gala event. Leaders in other activities were head composers Lorene Brown and Dorothy Holden who were assisted by Dee Gehrig, Albert Opolka, and Do- lores Thomas in bringing you Your Sphinx of 1945. The Publishing Company was headed by lrma Felchlia, editor-in-chief of The Sphinx newspaper, Scott Kell, senior associate editor, and Glenn Bischof and Iim McKee, co-editors of the sports page. To the strains of martial music, ferry Aussieker, drum majorg Bob Melton, twirlerg and Barbara Niemann, Virginia Stivers, and Mary Belle Westman, majorettes, led the band at many performances. Ann Chaffee, as chairman of the Everygirls Banquet, led the King Cotton March along with her senior assistant, Dolores Thomas. Dolores was also elected the D. A. R. representative from our class. Our outstanding musicians included ferry Aussieker, vocalist and band memberg Virginia Stivers and Mary Belle Westman, vocalists, Mary Ruth Hilton, pianistp and Mary Mabry, Wayne Terry, and Avonell Williams, band members. Though occupied with many activities, we were also interested in scholarship. fimmy Agersborg, Helmer Agersborg, Edwin Copple, Dorothy Holden, Betty Scott, and Dolores Thomas were straight-A students for the first semester. Although this year, our final and most glorious, was a busy one for all of us, there were few discords. The year was crowded with many events that will provide pleasant memories-memories whose melodies will linger on. 37 fi! Although We did not have a Freshman Mixer, We soon became acquainted with each other behind the superVisor's back in freshman study and on the shelf during assemblies. It was during our initial year at CTI-IS that we assembled and heard war declared ,upon Iapan by Congress the day after the attack on Pearl Harbor. That same year our basketball team became state champions. Although we did nothing outstanding, we quickly established ourselves in the everyday routine of our school. Corbell Superintendent lt is my wish to add a few words here to all the students represented in this eventful year of our school history. l wish that l were endowed with the prophetic wisdom and the power of language to impress upon every one of you the importance of your life, not only for its own enjoyment, but for what it can mean to others and to a better and happier world. The main reason you have spent from one to four years in high school has been to bring out your inherent powers and round out personalities for your work and asso- ciations with others. lt is with much satisfaction that we teachers may contribute something to such developmentg and we always observe with keen pleasure the wholesome' unfolding of the individuality of boys and girls with whom we work from day to day. But we can add only to the begin- ning of this process of living usefullyg we hope that for most: of you this start in life has been rightly directed by our efforts, We do not want to lose touch with you after you have lefty we want you to chart your course with the memory of this high school as a contact haven to which you may look for help and to which you may joyfully return from the storms of life. May you have a calm sea and smooth sailingl SUPERINTENDENT. 48 U DEANS 5 Miss Dorothy fennings, Dean of Girls, and A. L. Al- though only three victories were registered, the gridders Were a definite threat to their oppon- ents. With only three players returning from last year's first team and With only a few boys who had been in an inter-school contest, Coach Trout developed a fighting team. During the nine-game schedule the Trout- men Won three important contestseall confer- ence games. These victories put them in sec- ond place in the South Six Conference. Lead- ing the offensive were two senior linemen, Rogers and Opolka, who befuddled opponents by pulling out of their positions to carry the ball. Geilhausen and Schifferdecker were the spark plugs of the backfield with Broughton and Oland in the supporting roles. Anderson, Schnake, and McKee were outstanding on de- fense. McKee received honorable mention in the all-state football selections for center. Other linemen were lackson and Klosterman. After a lapse of one year in their rivalry, Mt. Vernon and Centralia engaged in a bitterly fought contest which resulted in the Orphans' defeat, 25-U. Five of the '44 regulars Will graduate this year: Rogers, Opolka, lackson, Broughton, and McKee. Several underclassmen saw consider- able action during the season and will return next year to form the nucleus of another fight- ing Centralia team. With the opening of school, the members of the gym classes, efficiently directed by Miss Palmer, instructor of Girls Physical Education, began their year with calisthenics. After Weeks of aching muscles and creaking bones, the girls con- tinued their year's program by playing volley ball and indian baseball. J Twisted necks and ankles Were the results of tumbling which came next. Of the competitive sports engaged in, basketball seemed to be preferred by most of the girls. The climax of the season was an inter-class tournament held in March. The spoils be- longed to the Sophomores who defeated the hard-fighting Freshmen. Preparations for colorful period dances of America to be given at the May Pete were begun soon after the tournament. The girls Worked industriously during class, before and after school, and at noon to perfect the dances presented to the public at this annual event. Outdoor sports, such as baseball and certain phases of track, concluded a year of toil and enjoyment for the girls in the gym classes. 61 0' Earl Queen, Earl Baker, Billy loe Thomason F A K E, S H O T, F Q U L Passage, Although Coach Trout's 1944-45 basketball edition of the Orphans did not reach the state finals, they achieved some very high honors. T'he Centralia quintet flashed through four bril- liant games in the second annual Centralia Holiday Tournament, one of the strongest mid- season classics in the state, to win the trophy. After stepping over the weaker teams in the Regional Tourney, the Troutmen advanced to the Sectional by defeating a favored Salem five. The ,Qrphan cagers were finally stopped by a very' owerful West Frankfort crew in the Sectional? finals. The boys who represented CTHS in the final tournaments were Anderson fcaptainl, DeLay, McBride, Rogers, and Rush. The only losses to the squad through graduation will be DeLay and Rogers, two very outstanding players. Tribute should also be paid to Coach Evers and his B squad. This group was the only B team in the state to remain undefeated throughout their entire schedule which consist- ed of twenty-six games. Their record has never been equaled by any CTHS basketball team, varsity or B squad. This team also won the South Six Conference championship for freshmen and sophomores. The boys who played during most of the games were Gluck, Manns, McBride, Mc- Dowell, McKain, Schlictman, and Iohnny Wil- son. SECOND FIDDLERS ,H .j , . Never before had a Centralia track team racked up such vic- tories as the thinclads of last year. Coach lim Evers led his band of Orphans to first place in 1944 poils South Six Championship, Lawrenceville District Championship, Paris Relays Championship the Paris Relays and the Big Six Conference Meet. Next the cindermen earned their way to the State Meet by sweeping through the District contest at Lawrenceville. The track- sters, coming through with six victories and two second places, failed to place in only the State meet. The most consistent point-gainers were as follows: Geilhausen, Lake, and Wilson, dashes, Anderson and Opolka, hurdles and 440 respec- tivelyg Conner and Noble, pole vaultg McCul- lough and Osborn, high jumpg and McDonald and Wilson, broad jump, Bogard and Rogers figured prominently in the middle distances, Schifferdecker heaved the shot, and White hurled the discus. Garrett and Phillips were consistent in the mile. The frosh relay, com- posed of Bryant, McDonal, Gluck, and Schultz, was defeated only twice. Ed, Note.-Because of conditions due to the war, this year's Sphinx had to go to press too early to report the record of the l945 track season. We have, therefore, reviewed the record of the 1944 tracksters. This policy will be followed hereafter. With this information the members were able to take positions with sufficient knowl- edge of what would be expected of them. 71 Hail to the Cardinal. The first major event of the year was the annual message from the Superintendent at the Convocation Assembly on September 7. We got off to a good start on September 20 by electing Glenn Bischof and Shirley Lee to be our Student Body officers, and by September 27 football practice was well underway. The new school busses finally arrived, and October 6 found the students who lived in outlying dis- tricts riding to school on the truck for the last time. lt was also on October 6 that the Bed- birds defeated the Marion football team 25-O. On October 9 the students rode merrily to school in the new busses for the first time. One of these same busses transported the football team to Urbana on October 13. At an assem- bly held October 16, Bobert Zimmerman, a famous deep-sea diver, told us of some of the many interesting things that happen under water, and October 24 found the Annual staff having club pictures made. Open House was held at CTHS on Novem- ber 8, and many parents and friends in the community were present to view the exhibits put up by the students. On November 11, the 1944 football season ended. The opening celebration for Book Week, November 12-18, was a Book Week Tea given by the library for the faculty and other guests on November 12. A mock election, sponsored by the Sphinx Weekly, held November 7. and participated in by all students, reelected President Boosevelt for a fourth term. Basketball season officially opened for us on November 18 when we de- feated Ashley 53-24. V On December 5. a student assembly pro- gram was given at which time contributions were made by the students to buy a memorial plaque on which the names of CTHS alumni and former students who had died in World War ll were to be listed. This plaque was unveiled on December 7, immediately before an assembly held to observe Pearl Harbor Day. Two major events of the year occurred on December 15-the Music and Foreign Lan- guages Departments presented the annual Christmas play, and school was dismissed for the Christmas holidays. On the next day, December 16, Champaign defeated the Or- phans in a thrilling game 44-37. Nothing hap- pened for nearly two weeks. Then, on Decem! 4' ber 29, the Troutmen won the Centralia Holi- day Tournament after four hard games of play. On Icmuary 5 the tedious job of tabulating the Senior statistics was begun, and on Icmucrry 12 the Orphans began and completed the task of defeating the Harrisburg quintet. Ianuary 22 proved to be one of the blackest days of the year, first semester report cards were distrib- uted. One of the most popular and well-liked assemblies of the year was provided on Icrnu- ary 24 when the Reveliers swung out for the benefit of the swing fans. FBLA typing contests were held Icmucxry 23, and on Icrnuary 29 Scott Kell entered college, leaving the Sphinx Weekly minus a Senior as- sistant. The first important event of the second month of the year occurred on February 5 when Betty Hodson began her new duties as office secretary. Then, on February 14. the second big event took place. At the annual Valentine-'s Day darice, Mary Mabry and lim Kalberkamp were' elected Valentine sweet- hearts. X, il t ,I ' , A v K x , X .Jljjl ri!! X!! jj 21 tl!
