This beautiful edition emerges from our beloved high school during a year of crisis and world turbulence. Most of the people pictured Within these pages have not escaped the effects of the changing World. There is Miss Audrey Brandol an intriguing bond between those who once Walked these halls and those who play on this stage today and keep the record complete for the many who, though far away, cherish fond mem- ories of happy days and friendly faces of other years. They are happy in the thought that you students of 1943-44 are carrying on, that you can enjoy even in a war-torn World what they enjoyed, and that you are proud to perpetuate for them and for others to come the activities and traditions of C. T. H. S. These years and events serve to impress upon our students the great value of the heritage they en- joy. This book is a living symbol of the gratitude and appreciation our students feel and express for all the blessings and opportunities afforded by a benevolent and democratic gov- ernment which permeates the entire structure of our whole society. To you students and teachers who have Work- ed so untiringly to edit and preserve the War-days life of our school, the Superintendent expresses his deep thanks and appreciation. Sincerely yours, OSCAR M. CORBELL, Superintendent SEHHIH BHHHH Another school year at an endg an- other edition of the Sphinx Annual, an- other class of Seniors graduating from C. T. H. S. We all know that the school year has been a fine one and although faced with a faculty shortage, and with student enrollment smaller, you students have made this year that is ending a very memorable one in our long history. This Sphinx Annual speaks for it- self and its interesting pages record the fgct that even though this is the Slst such yearbook to come out of our school every annual staff is able to add their own particular mark to dis- tinguish their book from the ones which have gone before. This class of Seniors likewise will leave their distinguishing marks with those of our school who have worked with you during your four years here. However, their work will have been in vain if you do not make your mark Mrs. Barbara Huffman in the life which follows this last year in school. We are all very sure that you will accept your new respon- sibilities with the same zest that you have shown here in school and that the Class of 1944 is on the threshold of great things. I. Over two-thirds ot the students were enrolled in boys and girls gym classes taught on a stepped-up scale by Mr. limmie Evers and Miss Esther Palmer. With an oft year in varsity athletics, more boys were given a chance at competitive athletics and the annual class tournament, tumbling, Wrestling, and ju-jitsu events kept our school ranking high among those building our youth strong that they might better serve their country. Not only do the girls receive training to build sound bodies but also to develop poise and co- ordination Which are important throughout the girls' lives, no matter What they do. Calisthenics formed a large part ot the girls' routine, but competitive sports were played with avid interest. Several basketball teams were torm- ed, and the all-girl games rivaled our tournaments in thrills. ln tact, our P. E. classes developed enough sharpshooters to Win again first place in both the district and state-Wide basket shooting contest, This year the boy's physical education program in our school Was stepped up considerably in ac- cordance with Army and Navy requirements so that boys entering the armed forces should be phy- sically tit. HHYS IWHFUHM Assistant Coach limmie Evers, as head of the boys gym classes, kept the department running in high gear. Competitive sports and calisthenics played an important part in the body building pro- gram. Combative athletics, included boxing, Wrestling, track, basketball, and tumbling were offered. Since the emphasis was on getting stronger instead of trying to excell in one sport, no special attention was given any one sport, but the fundamentals of each Were thoroughly stressed. An obstacle course much like those used in mili- tary training was constructed and proved an im- portant phase of the boy's training. The classes this year consisted of nine differ- ent sections. One section had tive days of gym each Week, one class had three days While the rest had two Workouts each Week. Approximately 360 were enrolled in the various sections, meaning that tour-fifths of the boys at C.T.H.S. received the ad- vantages of a complete body building program. An important lesson that young people should learn is self denial. 9 Your parents have been obliged to deny themselves many things in order to give you an education and if you enter college their home economy must increase. When we con- sider the terrible distress of people in Europe and Asia we must confess that we are extremely fortunate and the rationing of food, shoes, gasoline, etc., which we are called upon to forebear, is of minor importance. We lcnew a wise man who said Nothing is cheap or a bargain that you do not need. 9 If by foregoing that which you do not need, you can buy War Savings Stamps or Bonds, you will strengthen your character and help our brave soldiers, sailors, aviators and marines to win this cruel war.
