LQD I 'l 'O R, Aileen Call D D I A T I N MM A , I Zi' T h I sas a era Mr. M07lOH'G701158ll7 Ay, there are some good things in life. That fall not away with the rest. And, of all best things upon earth. I hold That a faithful friend is the best. -Lytton 'llownspeople know him as the voice on the football public address system, radio and newspaper men know him as the supplier ol' the data, future journal- ists know him as the guardian of the deadline, students know him as a teacher never too busy to hear their problems, annual staff members know him as a helping hand, and everyone knows him as a good guy. Mr. Gronseth, who for several years was annual advisor, this year has always been ready to give us a bottle of glue, a ruler, some worthwhile advice, or a nod of encouragement. To him, with gratitude, we dedicate this annual. Page Z Vice-Principaf Waldo Roberts Principal Harold Geffrke Vice-Principal Roberts Says: Principal Gelirke Says: This school year, as all school years, has passed by all too quickly. But as we look back in later life, We will realize that it has been a busy and profitable one. Continue to prepare yourselves for the responsi- bilities and challenges that will be yours in the tasks that lie ahead. Prepare well, that you will be better able to contribute fully to a happy life for yourself and your loved ones. To the seniors, I extend my most sincere congrat- ulations and best wishes for the future. We will miss you. Congratulations also to the annual staff for this fine annual. This record of school life will recall many happy days spent in Centralia High, and will be a lasting possession of satisfaction to us all. May we look back to the past with pleasure and to the future with anticipation. Page 3 This year marks the last time I shall be greeting you as principal of a four-year school. All those who help to plan and operate our Centralia schools hope that the junior high school will help solve some of the dilemna you faced as entering freshmen. Per- haps merely calling entering students sophomores will destroy the fear. At any rate, we can say of you, you were the last to graduate from Centralia High School as a four year institution. When it comes time to summarize the achieve- ment of each class I wonder how all the various honors and awards you posted as a group can be re- duced to a few words. Certainly, among the high- lights is the enviable scholarship efforts in the National Merit Scholarship Program. Such success can not be attributed only to individuals, student or adult, but to an attitude. Such an attitude is es- pecially praiseworthy when We consider the critical position of the United States in World affairs. Such achievement shows the entire world that scholarship has not been neglected here. The regret I feel at seeing you leave is mixed with optimism and certainty as to your successful futures. As you leave Centralia High School remem- ber that We will all be wishing for you to gain the goals you set for yourselves. l 1 1 l 4 SCIIOOI BOEIFJ This year the school welcomed Dr. Ken- neth Mallery from Sunnyside, Mlashington, to district 401 in his first year as superin- tendent. Thor Peterson and Earl Norman, in their first year of coaching at Tigers- ville, finished the season with six wins, two losses and one tie. Highlights of the season were two very convincing wins over Chehalis, an upset tie with Lincoln of Tacoma, who was the AP's top team in the state at the time. Other Tiger wins were over Elma, Hoquiam, and Battleground, all by very large margins. The only two losses suffered by the Tigers were to Aberdeen and Stadium. The men of the gridiron were led by four fast running backs: Ron Siemers, quarterback, Ken Fry and Buzz Foote, halfbacksg Larry Worrell, fullback. The seven top men in the line were Theron Ticknor and Kip Siemers, endsg Bob Hutchins and Fred Hil- pert, tackles, Dennis Swanson and Terry Olson, guards, and- Rich Backman, center. Dave Lawson, Paul Conzatti, Francis Allbritton, Jim Rupp, Gary Jordan, Bill Loop, Gary Loomis and Jerry Swenson all played important parts when needed. Stastically the Tigers were led in scoring by Ken Fry and Larry Worrellg rushing by Buzz Foote, Fry and Worrellg and passing by Ron Siemers. Defen- sive stand-outs were Theron Ticknor, Kip Siemers, Dennis Swanson, Larry Worrell, and Ken Fry. Wor- rell, Fry, Foote, and Swanson were picked on All League teams. Out of the twenty-two men who received letters this year, thirteen will be returning, so future grid- iron prospects look very bright. - VARSITY BASKETBALL First Five, top-left to right: Ray Siemers, Stan Stafford, Mike Merriman. Bottom: Ron Sierners, Ray Butler, Coach Matt Pavalunas. For the first time in fourteen years the Centralia High School basketball team made the state tour- nament in Seattle. Coach Pavalunas and his Tigers won the Capital League for the first time in school history and proved themselves superior to every team in the area finishing the regular season with 19 wins and 1 loss. At the state tournament the Tigers weren't quite so lucky, coming home from this great affair with a 1 win-2 loss record. They lost to Kent-Meridian, 45-49, in the openerg handled Everett with ease, 60-453 but then were eliminated from the tournament with an upset loss to Roose- velt of Seattle, 55-62. During the regular season the Tigers Won every one of their pre-league games. Some of these Warm- up games Were Longview, Port Angeles, and North Thurston. When league play started Centralia kept right on Winning and had a string of 12 in a row before they Wfere handed their first and only defeat, that being to Stadium of Tacoma, 49-55. Bottom: Butch Roberts, Bill Waterson, Manager Bob Sapp. By the time the regular season had ended the Tigers had set many new records. They won the Capital League for the first time, and they also set a new scoring record in a game, 83 points against Raymond. Stan Stafford, the Tigers' ace center, also set some scoring records. Against Lincoln he scored 38 points for a new league and school recordg he broke the Capital League season's total with 206 points in 10 league gamesg and he set a new high for a Centralia High School basketball player, 500 points. Page 43 All five of the starting players were mentioned on all-Capital League teams. Stan Stafford and Mike Merriman made the first team. Ray Siemers and Ray Butler made honorable mention. Stan Stafford made an all-opponents team of Capital League players. Mike Merriman, Ray Siemers, and Ron Siemers also received votes. With only three seniors on this year's squad, next basketball season looks very good. This year's team, playing with juniors and sophomores, finished the season with a record of three wins, two losses and one tie. Coach Jerry Robinson and his boys fashioned two wins over Olympia, 13-0, 8-7, and one against Chehalis, 13-12, The tie game was against Hoquiam. The games after which they found themselves be- hind were against the same Olympia and Hoquiam teams. Some of the boys whom Varsity Coach Thor Peter- son should be glad to see are Gary Loomis, top scorer, Bill Loop, top linemang Paul Conzatti, top passerg and Louie Larson, top defensive end. Many other boys showed promise for the coming season. There wasn't a game that Coach Anderson was able to field his best eleven at one time. Even against these odds they finished the season with a record of one win, two losses and one tie. Flu cancelled two scheduled games with Jefferson of Olympia and Shelton. The one win the Yellowjackets managed to come out with was against Hoquiam, 6-0. They tied Wash- ington of Olympia and lost twice to crosstown rivals, Chehalis, 2-12 and 6-24, the latter score being the annual Junior High Classic. Many of the boys on this year's team showed promise for the coming seasons, but some of the standouts were Don Germeaux, Dick Upton, Dick Scott, backsg and Bob Pollack and Larry Hall, line- men. Conzatti and Bigbee led the team in scor- ing, and Helgeson, Hutchins, and Ticknor were backboard and defensive stars. Coach Anderson and his boys had a nine-game winning streak going into the final three games but lost two out of these three. The Yellowjackets started the season with a solid win over Chehalis, 41-27, and then ran up eight more in this order: Washington of Olympia, 27-233 Miller of Aberdeen, 22-203 Hoquiam, 26-253 Chehalis, 44-173 Hopkins of Aberdeen, 31-273 Mon- tesano, 43-315 Washington of Olympia, 36-30, and Miller of Aberdeen, 26-21. Then came their defeat against Hoquiam, 38-29. Centralia then regained their early-season form and dumped Montesano, 38-30. But in the last game of the season they found themselves behind for the second time, 35-32, losing to Hopkins of Aberdeen. High scorer for the team was Dave Blanchard. Others who did much scoring were Dick Scott, Mike Wheeler, Mike West, and Paul Fagerness. In the next couple of years these boys will be playing varsity ball, and with the potential of this club they should do very well. There also was a B squad in the Junior High School program. They finished with two wins and eight losses. Page 47 fi? M r 'misss as-ser, as Le t to right Mr Vern Berry, Iohn Gibson, Mike Don Brister, George Butlqus. They tumbled during the half-time of two home games, the Centralia-Longview game and the Cen- tralia-Hoquiana game. Also, in Centralia they per- formed for the Elks Club and the American Legion. They traveled to Tacoma to tumble during the half time of a game between Pacific Lutheran College and Western Washington College of Education. This performance was partially televised. The other out-of-town performance was for Toledo High School. Page 52 Girls, This year's girls tumbling teams consisted of the varsity team of nine girls and the freshman team of ten girls. There was a turnout for all the girls who wished to be on the tumbling team. They were judged on their ability to do tumbling stunts by three students and Miss Christensen.
