A5 ll M ll C Q, l X 5 Following through with the theme of Four Seasonsf, we introduce our idea of the four seasons drawn by Abbie Wesen. On the left, of course, the falling leaves which mean that we have to tumble back to school in the Fall. At the top are the skiis and skipoles that show us a large number of students are looking forward to snow and the fun it brings to those who like to slide and glide down the slopes of mountains. On the right is probably one of the best liked seasons around What is an annual? An annual is a book of pictures and writings of things that happen throughout the school year. There have been fifty annuals produced during the history of Centralia High school. This annual of the school year for I955-56 is the fifty first. It may be considered en- tirely different than the fifty ahead of it as it is the first to have mounted pictures with a sunk in effect. 'l'his effect is formed by mounting one picture on top of another called a background picture. The four seasons of the year is the theme. Throughout the book there are many back- ground pictures of scenery which are taken from each season of the year and put in a special sec- Centralia high school. The rhododendrons in front of school burst out along with the greenery of the rest of the trees and bushes around school. Last picture is the big time for all seniors--graduation. lt is the time when all of the students Worry about that one class they are having trouble in or how will they ever be able to act like a senior should, etc. With this we hope you will like our annual. Annual Class tion accordingly. Activities that come in the fall are in the fall section, winter activities in the winter section. and the same procedure is follow- ed for spring and summer. Class pictures are somewhat in the same order. Freshmen are in the fall section because they enter school in the fall, sophomores are in the winter section because they have more activities during the winter, jun- iors are in the spring section because their activities are in the spring time and the seniors are in the early summer section because they graduate in the early summer, VVe hope that you, the reader. enjoy this book. The project, largest bond issue for many many years in district 401, is over one million dollars. ll' passed. this will relieve the squeeze and the large classes especially in the grade schools. Wforking with the schoolboard, the citizens' committee for better schools, community devel- opment and the many other clubs and organiza- tions in the community. Mr. Holman has an entirely important job in getting the correct information to the voters of the district. The job calls for many speeches which keeps him on the job late at night. Mr. Holman's typical of the Four Seasons theme of the annual. He has a long day--and Page 3 works during the summer as well as the other three school seasons of the year. The finding of teachers for the schoolboard to hire is another of the big tasks Mr. Holman has to do each year, and it seems this year that he will have to find many teachers for those who are moving out of Centralia this year. Xvith Mr. I-lolman's quick smile and slow Southern speech-Texas style suh-he is often seen hurrying through the high school halls going to and from his office on the first floor. Because the annual had not been printed until after May I5 we were able to add the vote for the new building for the junior high and grade school additions. The vote was 1,834 for the new building program and l.0?56 against it which means that 63.9 per cent voted for the new building which is enough to okay the pro- gram. Their coach, Mr. -lohn Donahue, teaches the sixth grade at th Edison Grade school. He got his training at St. lvlartins college. One of the high lights ol' the team was the spirit they had during the season. 'l'hey had good morale and when in a losing game they didn't give up. Due to injuries ol' two key players the team was not at lull strength but the determin- ation ol' them made up for it. We hope to see a lot ol' hoys from this years freshman club on next years varsity. Neither polio, nor injuries, nor snow, nor ankle- deep mud could keep the Centralia Tigers from par- ticipating in one of the oddest football seasons in Southwest Washington Gridiron history. Tragedy and happiness were mirrored in the Tigers' 10 game schedule which saw them face seven of the top teams in the state. The Tigers opened their 1955 season on a suc- cessful note with a come from behind 13-6 victory over the Chehalis Bearcats. John Brill scored one touchdown and set up another to pace the Tigers to their sixth straight victory over the Bearcats. However, the happiness over the victory was ended the next day with the tragic announcement that Tiger football coach Hal Schrupp had contracted polio. Quarantines were placed on the football team and the entire student body and the Tigers' next game with Hoquiam was postponed. Buckling down to work under assistant coaches Maitland Anderson and Matt Pavalunas after the layoff, the Tigers began to prime for the Kelso game, minus their head coach who was lying in a hospital bed in Seattle. The Kelso game saw the Tigers fight the High- landers to a 20-20 standstill and keep their perfect record intact. The next week, the Tigers took on the Hoquiam Grizzlies in a make-up of the game which had been postponed earlier. The Tigers ran into too much jim Graham in this game and came out on the short end of the count by a 26-12 score as the Grizzly halfback scored three touchdowns. It took the Tigers a full quarter to warm up the next week and by the time they had, Aberdeen held a 27-0 lead over the homestanding Tigers. After the first quarter, the Tigers fought the Bobcats to a standstill but the die had already been cast and the harbor city eleven had a 33-13 win. Page next week was ruined as their namesakes, the Stadium Tigers, rolled to a 19-6 decision. Speed 1955 Trapper style was accentuated in Centralia the next week as the Vancouver Trappers paced by Don Maw's five touchdowns rolled to a 61-0 win over the injury ridden Tigers. Injuries continued to plague the Tigers when they played Olympia the following week and the Centralians came home on the short end of a 27-6 score. The weatherman contributed to the next Tiger ballgame by dumping a white mantle of snow on the ground and the Tigers responded by rallying their meager forces together to pull one of the biggest upsets of the year in downing the Longview Lumber- jacks 14-6 in the annual Veteran's day game. Playing in three inches of snow and wearing gloves, the Tigers snapped a seven year jinx in downing the Lumberjacks. The snow turned to mud the next week and the Tigers dropped their last Capital League game of the year to the Lincoln Abes 27-0. The annual Turkey day contest with Chehalis was also played in ankle-deep mud and saw the Tigers fight the Bearcats to a 0-0 standstill. However, the game was a moral victory for Tiger followers in one way for it marked the first return of Head Coach Schrupp to Centralia since his polio attack. Following the season several Tigers were singled out for individual awards. Coach Schrupp, making a surprise appearance before the student-body at the awards assembly, presented Rudy Gideon with the most inspirational player award and Mike Seymour with the improved player award. Ray Kinnaman, Tiger end, was named to the all-Southwest, all-Capital, all-State and all-American teams and will participate in the annual State High school football game next fall in Spokane. A s QS in - f 2 1 ,+-ff X SSB, sf W Ten new school records were set and another tied by members of the 1955 Centralia Tiger football team this past fall. The Tiger passing attack, which composed most of the Centralia offensive play, dominates most of the new records with a total of nine new marks set. Quarterback Les Reynoldson led the new individual record field by rewriting three of his own passing records set in 1954. The Tiger quar- terback set a new individual mark in passes at- tempted with 166, in passes completed with 77 and in passes intercepted with 10. Centralia's All-American end Ray Kinna- man set a new record in pass receiving for the Tigers this past fall. The lanky senior caught 26 passes for 270 yards, breaking his own record of 16 pass receptions set in 1954. The top record of the year, however, was that set by Rudy Gideon in the defensive de- partment. The senior co-captain end participated in 140 tackles while anchoring down the right side of the Tiger's defense at linebacker. Gid- eon's new mark broke the old record of 64 set by Gene Fry in 1954. Two other members of the 1955 varsity also broke the tackle record. Buzz Saari, the other co-captain, and Kinnaman both participated in over 80 tackles, Saari making 95 and Kinnaman 81. Gideon also tied another record, that being the pass interception marked. Gideon intercep' ted three passes, to tie the mark set by Bob Bennett in 1953. In the team record department, the passes attempted, passes completed and passes inter- cepted marks all had to be rewritten after the past season. The Tigers attempted 192 passes, completed 84 and had 15 intercepted to break the three previous top marks set in 1954. The Tigers also set new marks in the pass intercepted department with 11 and in the kick- off return department with 37. Both records broke previous highs since records have been kept, starting with the 1952 season. Running down the rest of the outstanding marks for the Tigers this past year, the longest kickoff of the year was a 59 yard boot by John Edinger against Lincoln. Kinnaman made the longest run from scrimmage, a 19 yard skirt against Longview. The longest scoring pass of the year was a 37 yard aerial from Reynoldson to Kinnaman. Karl Drops and Phil Palmer had the longest returns on punts and kickoffs, Drops a 28 yard kickoff return. Gideon had the best night in the de- return, and Drops and Palmer both 11 yard punt fensive department, participating in 21 tackles against Chehalis.
