As we go through the four years in C.H.S. we just have one big unforgetable time. This world of musical notes begins with the freshman mixer in our first year and ends four years later with our final formal, the Senior Ball. Music spirits us on in school during our classes as well as in our extra curricular work. Of course the music by the band at our football and basketball games spurs our teams to better and bigger things. The marching of the band during half times at football games kept the fans in their seats for the entire performance, as the formations and different march steps keeps the fans watching every minute. We could say that each class in school has its own theme. The Freshman class could sing-along with the seniors- Oh! happy day. The Frosh of course, because they have finally reached high school, and the seniors for grasping their good gradu- ation. Most o fthe Sophomores are singing, 'A-lust One More Chance -as they finally are through their first year in high school. Of course, by this time some of their class- mates have dropped by the wayside. The Juniors-only one reach from their goal feel like A Bird in a Gilded Cagef. These, along with the song hits of today, are being echoed through the halls of our school every day. aya Con ios, ,Til We Meet Again l SENIOR OFFICERS, upper picture, left to right are-Ed Watterson, vice-presidentg ferry Kane, presirientg Miss Alice Atkinson, heaa' class advisorg M'ary Ann Hopp, secretary, and AI Thornton, treasurer. Pictured helow are the valedictorian, fudy Burdick on the left doing a chemistry experiment and on the right Bonnie Crowe as she straighten: out the hooks as ASB treasurer. Judy had a 4.00 straight 'A' average, Bonnie a 3.9. At last the day has come that students have been looking forward to for 12 years. GRADU- ATION! As we go back over our four years in high school we remember when we first came here as freshmen. The Girls League put on a Big and Little Sister party for the girls and the Boys Club sponsored a Mixer for the boys. Then the annual Freshman Party was held. We also had a Freshman play called The Silver Arrow. In our Sophomore year we held the tradition- al Sophomore Carnival with Freshman as our guests. We also had a skating party which we crowned a King and Queen of Hearts. VVe started the Junior year off with the junior Prom. The theme was Blue Moon. The junior Play, Our Hearts Weise Young and Gay, was the next event. On August 31, l953, we began our final year in high school. The first event was the Senior Play called High Ground? On April 9 the Senior Tea was held for all Senior Mothers at the Presbyterian Church. On April 30 the last big event of the year will be held, The Senior Ball, with the theme, Memories of Paris. Baccalaureate is Sunday night, May 23, l954, at 8:00 The Senior Picnic will be held the following day, Monday, May 24. Graduation is Thursday, May 27, at 8:00 in the Centralia High School. This is both a sad and happy affair as we all realize this is the last school affair we will take part in. He came from White Salmon, Washington. . Working with the Superintendent this year was board members led during the first half of the year by Mr. Morrill Folsom and later half by Mr. Howard Brines. Others on the board are Mr. Felix Delysle, Mr. Morris Rubenstein and Mr. Cleon Linderman. One of the largest problems of the board and the Superintendent is facing is increasing the enrollment throughout the system. High School has its own growing pains prom- ised fixing of the burned out annex and the ad- dition of the new annex to house Agriculture and Shop classes. The old annex will take care of Music and the two Home Economics sections. Jaffe Frame, Head Advisorg Myrna Carey, Secretaryg and Pal Hofladay, Treasurer. This year the Juniors, the class of '55, start- ed off with a feeling ol dignity, prestige and superiority. lNe were finally 'upper class- men'. It did show that all of the work we did in the last two years was worth every second. Now we were half way through, part of the long struggle was over, and now only two years until we walk up for the diploma. The first big event of our year was the junior Proni-'Winter VVonderland'. It was held December fifth. Almost 100 couples at- tended the dance-with music by Leo Mil- anowski's band. The second big event-and new event- was the Junior play-'The Curious Savagef The cast, under the direction of Loris Cramp- ton, worked hard to make the play a success. Many of their fellow classmen also helped in the advertising, stage, programs, properties and the many other things that go to make the play a success. Sharon Monaghan was the student director. Now with the year ending we will be mov- ing into our final school year-we are seniors. One last thought in our junior year, good- bye to the Seniors and we hope that the up- coming Juniors will have as good a time as this Junior class. Not only did some of our students win honors in schol- astic things, but also some of the athletes won varsity letters. Pictured directly above is the big get to- gether of the class-the Sophomore carnival. Every roll room set up at least one boothg balloon shaving, cake Walk, penny pitch and many more were on the midway. The 'King and Queen of Hearts' dance in the middle of the year was handled by the Sophomores this year. M76 had to do all of the decorating in the gym, conduct the elec- tion of King and Queen, then see that the dance went all right. As the annual goes to press we are cast- ing for the sophomore play, one of the last things we do during the year. Lost? Looking for roll rooms? What will the teachers be like? Will we ever fit into this routine? These are typical questions we had in our minds on the first day of school, way back last August. At the beginning of the year the Juniors and Seniors sign for Freshmen and new girls to act as their little sisters. These upper class- men escort them to classes and present a party to get acquainted. This party is held at the end of the first week of school. The boys are given a Freshman mixer. Pictured above are some of the Freshmen boys participating in the games which were play- ed. They usually have this in the gym where the students have refreshments. As the year progressed they sponsored a sock dance and the girls took part in the Girls League mothers tea. Many of us also at- tended the big formal dances, and made most of the noise at the games. The high ground was a Catholic Nursing Home which took in all of the Hooded peoples. This included a convicted rnurderess, Sarat Carn, and the jailers who were to see that Miss Carns got to prison. Sister Mary Bonaventure felt that Sarat was innocent of the crinie, and set about to prove the fact. By bringing the other Sisters of the nursing home into the plot-digging up old newspapers and pictures-Sister Bonaventure proved Miss Carn's innocent. The guilty party proved to be Doctor Jefferys. The play was directed by Loris Crampton, and Nancy Barnes was the student director. The leading character, Mrs. Savage, was committed to the institution because of her greedy children. What her children didn't know was that she sold all her prop- erty and converted the money into non-negotiable bonds. At this institution there were Hve other patients, Fairy Mae-who was in love with herselfg Mrs. Paddy -who hated the world and everything in it, but was still a great painterg Hannible-who was a great viol- inistg Jeffery-who had been in the war and still car- ried the 'scare'g Florence-who lost her child and now had a doll which she believed was her child. In comparison with this years annual, that first edition would seem a rather small one. Although it gave a good coverage of school events, publishing methods were rather poor. With all of this in mind that junior class should be complimented. Even with all those disadvantages they went right ahead with their annual. Because of that pioneering we have our 1954 Skookum Wa Wa. Charlotte Manning was the editor for this years annual. She has done a very capable 'ob. It is a four page paper and at the present is published every three weeks. This year there were two issues which con- tained six pages. Also a special April Fool edition was published. The paper covers all activities which are participated in by the school. This years Journalism department was divided into two classes. The sixth period class consisted of those who have had experi- ence. A first period class was given for those without experience in Journalism. All seniors who have worked two years on the staff receive a journalism pin. There were live pins given out this year to Jack Chal- lender, Bev Gee, Dan Schmidt, Don Shafer and jane VVhite. Not a season of winning all of our ball games, but a season where we won enough to keep it interesting for the basketball team, school fans and the townspeople. Proof of this statement was the full gym on the final home game of the year -when the Tigers were firmly entrenched in the Northern Division basement, and playing the league champions. Another seasons thrill for the entire team was the week when they took Olympia out of first place by downing the tall Bears twice. Both times the games were close. Once the Tigers pulled from behind in the final quarter-and in both games were behind at halftime. The third thrill was a personal one in a way, but the team was as happy as Ed Watterson the night he scored 32 points against Aberdeen at the Bobcat stronghold. It was a tough ball game for the Tigers to lost, but the hometowners pulled the game out of the fire in the final three minutes. This 32-point spree was tops for the league this year, also. At the beginning of the season the Tigers looked ragged, and cou1dn't seem to get the scoring punch they needed for a winning combination. It wasn't until the team started playing as a team in January, that they finally started giving league opponents a scare. The opening game of the year was played on the Centralia court with the Elma Eagles. The Eagles- after losing the skyscraping Gary Nelson by gradua- tion-still had plenty of scoring punch to outscore the Tigers 56 to 34. It wasn't long after that that the Elma squad felt the sting of defeat at the hands of the Tigers, this time in Elma. The Black and Orange held their slim lead to beat back a previously once beaten Eagle squad 52 to 50. At the beginning of Northern division play it was Olympia who was the team to beat, they had size, scor- ing punch and speed. The Tigrs found their winning ways January 15 against Aberdeen with a 66 to 55 victory. Gary Brines, Don Parsons and Ed Watterson led the scoring parade with 18, 15 and 14 points respectively. The two Olympia wins were the only other victor- ies for the Tigers in league play-but they lost 3 other games by 2 points, and went to the wire only to lose in the final seconds in another game. The season ended with a 3 win, 9 loss record in conference play -8 wins and 12 losses for the entire season. Next year the basketball season will see the initial step in the formation of a new league. The four pres- ent teams-Aberdeen, Centralia, Hoquiam and Olym- pia will welcome the two Tacoma schools, Lincoln and Stadium. The Kittens, mostly sophomores, played a good brand of ball for an inexperienced team. A number of the teams they played used Juniors as the backbone of their squads. Two of the kittens, Rudy Gideon and Les Reynold- son, moved up for at least a few varsity games. Rudy broke his leg in his first varsity game at Elma, but had the looks of a good prospect for next year. From the looks of this years team, and the number of graduates from the varsity, many of this years kit- ten team will be playing varsity next year. 32 Chehalis -,--.-,,,,,,,...,...,...,................... The tallest man on the squad was just one inch under the six foot mark, but the shortest was just 5 foot 4 inches. VVhat the squad lacked in height they made up in lighting spirit, speed and smartness as far as basketball was concerned. The spirit they got from their coach Maitland 'Cooney' Anderson, was his never say die spirit. Centralia not only having the smallest team in years, but was playing in a league of giants. Every team the Yellowjackets played this year had at least one boy over 6 foot 2 inches, and some of the confer- ence teams had the whole forward wall of giants. Although the team only won 4 out of 10 they had the pleasure of beating the Chehalis squad twice, and the Monticello of Longview also twice. Centralia High School's varsity football team had a successful season. This is the highest season since l948. They won three games and lost three for a 500 average in league play. The season opened with the Rotary Jamboree and two non-league games with Elma and Battle Ground. League play opened October 2 with Centralia playing host to Kelso. Centralia won this game to give their new coach, Ted Hippi, a grand start for the season. Hippi had coached in Castle Rock before coming to Centralia. Bob Bennett and Gary Brines scored the two touchdowns with Don Parsons making the second conversion good. Hoquiam was the Tigers next opponent. They lost this game but then came back with a real thriller against Aberdeen. The Tigers were unable to make any points until the last five minutes of the game when Rueben Oster came through on a line punch for a touchdown. Don Parsons' kick was good tieing the game. Then with 23 seconds left in the game, Don Parsons passed to Gene Fry on a fourth down with one yard to go. Gene Fry made the catch in the end zone to win the game. The next victim of the Tiger power was Vancouver, who were in second place, one above the Tigers, when they met. Centralia then faced the first place Olympia Bears. The Bears were Hrst both in the league and in the state standings. Although losing this game, Cen- tralia scored 19 points which was the highest score against the Bears this season. Joe Hayes out ran Olympia's all-conference, all-state fullback, Bill Steiger, for two touchdowns during the game. The last league game of the season was against Longview. Centralia made a grand finish of the season by defeating the Chehalis Bear- cats in the annual Thanksgiving day game. The Bearcats were rated eighth in the state when they met the Tigers on Noble Field. Chehalis only crossed the center line into Centralia territory twice during the entire game. The Centralia Yellow jackets started the season at Mossyrock, the score was Centralia 7, Mossyrock 0. john Simmons caught a pass from Phil Palmer and the play went for 40 yards, and the only touchdown. Centralia lost a hard fought game with Chehalis, but came out on the short end of a 14 to 0 score. They played even all the game, but four minutes in the third quarter. In this time the Bearcubs scored two quick touchdowns, the only ones of the game. In the Aberdeen game the club came back to earn a hard-fought victory. Jim Smith was the hero, taking the kickoff and rolling 75 yards for the touchdown. The Yellow jackets were a small team, but used speed and deception to good advantage. In the Olympia game, the annual Kiwanis classic, the Olympia squad came down to- avenge last years defeat. The outcome proved sweet for the blue and white Capital team, as they took a 26 to 7 victory. Superior size, and a large reserve squad assured the Olympia team of victory. The team has only two boys who are seniors. This means most of these boys will be back next year. The two seniors are Don Ashbrook and Ron Dickenson. Another interesting thing about the team is that several of the boys on the team are playing tennis for the first time. These boys through hard work have become good tennis players. Mr. Loris Crampton, the tennis coach, said, This should help to encourage those who want to turn out but feel they should have practice first. The teams record will better show what these boys are doing. They have lost only one meet while win- ning live and splitting one at the time this went to press on May 7. The scores of these meets are as follows: Centralia 0, Olympia 73 Centralia 3, Chehalis 2g Centralia ZW, Aberdeen Zyzg Centralia 5, Elma Og Centralia 4, Che- halis lg Centralia 5, Tenino 03 Centralia 5, Shelton 0. At this time Centralia and Aberdeen were tied for second place with Olympia the number one team. Centralia and Chehalis will be hosts to the South- west Washington tennis tournament this year. Back row: Billie Severns, Maryflnn Gordon, Beverly Gee, Ioan Sundermeier and Tennis Coach Ruth Moe. This year the girls tennis team has won up to May 7, two meets and lost three with one remaining meet with Olympia on May 14. Centralia High School had four returning lettermen. Maryanne Gordon, Billie Severns, Beverly Gee, and Virginia Gilson with two, two, three, and four years of experience, respectively. Joining these girls for the first time are Sandy Merriman, Joan Sundermeier, and Carol Root. At the beginning of the season these girls drew numbers for a place on a ladder which was used to determine the position the girls were to play on the team. This, of course, was subject to change if a girl had been challenged and defeated by one of her team members. Six official games were scheduled for this year. The first game was with Che- halis, the Bearcats won three to two. Centralia took the meet from Longview four to one, lost to Aberdeen two to three, lost to Olympia one to four, and de- feated Chehalis five to zero. In an unolhcial tournament with Tenino, Centralia won four to zero. T Highlight of the school tennis season comes with the annual Southwest Wash- ington Girls' Tennis Tournament. This year it will be held in Olympia May 22. A team cup as well as individual awards will be given to the outstanding players. Three girls, one doubles and one singles, will be eligible to participate. The positions the girls played are as follows: Maryanne Gordon and Billie Severns, First doubles. These girls will be going to the SWW meet. Sandy Merri- man and .Ioan Sundermeier, second doubles, Virginia Gilson, first singles, will be attending the SMVW meet, Carol Root, second singles, Beverly Gee, third singles. Miss Ruth Moe was the team coach and Carolyn Hensley, team manager. Page as Page 69 Page 70 Take Me Ont To the Bal! Back row: Coach Maitland Anderson, Don Swanson, jim Whitmire, jim White, Don Fowler, Les Reynoldson, Verle Robinson, Steve Hayes, and Manager Ron Chastain. This years baseball team has many unique features-as well as a winning ball club. A long trip to Richland, was a feature of April, with the Centralia nine breaking a 20-game Bomber winning streak. Rueben Oster was the winning hurler in that game as he held the hard-hitting Bombers to only two singles. Two seniors, Gary Brines hit 3 for 7 and jack Challender 2 for 2, and a sophomore, Rudy Gideon, 3 for 7, were the batting heroes of the two games in Eastern Wash- mgton. The second unique feature is of sophomores who are working and getting starting berths. At least two and often as many as five sophomores have been in the starting lineup. At the time this writeup went to press-May 1-the Tigers were in a Hrst place tie with the Olympia Bears. The two teams have identical league records of 4 wins and 2 losses each. The two teams split their four game series, and just have to win the rest of their games to stay on top. In the Twin City series for the new cup, the Tigers won the First leg behind the hitting and pitching of Rueben Oster. Darylee Cox started the game for the Tigers, but was shelled in the third inning. Oster finished the game, holding the Bearcats to two scratch hits. The final score was 8-4, Centralia.
