Few people realize the fact that our school system is less than one hundred years old. The first school in our system was the Alder Street School shown in the above picture. VVe are not certain of the exact year in which it was built but the picture was taken in 1880. It was a small wooden frame building with very few rooms. The building without walls to the left, was used as a playshed. Today Centralia has one of the most mod- ern schools in the state. It is the new NVashing- ton School located on South Field Street. It has large well lighted classrooms which are central- ly heated. One of the most prominant features of the school is the gymnasium which is used for everything from P.E. classes to square dances. Besides the Wlashington School we now have seven other grade schools, a high school and the Hrst Junior College in the state. Transportation for getting to and from school has also been greatly changed. In the Old days the students had to furnish their own transpora tation. This meant they either had to walk or ride horses. Today we have school buses that pick up the students that live lar from school. Also many of the students have their own cars which they drive to school. Wie are very proud of our state and its schools and we hope they will continue to improve in the next one hundred years. XVe were delighted to attend our annual Frosh Gym Party, and we began leeling more at home. even though those upperclassmen seemed large and strange to us. In our Sophomore year we were very enthused over our annual Sophomore Carnival which was a very successful as well as loads of lun. Then we went further to have a Sophomore play called Ru- mors Y'Vanted which also was a big hit. Returning to school in our Junior year we felt more important and proud as now lower classes looked up to us. NVe went through this year accept- ing our responsibilities and making our lirst formal dance with the theme Showboat held in the cafe- teria. The Divine Flora was a comedy that ran two nights sending the audience out smiling with misty eyes. Then ever onward with the tide of progress we entered our Senior year. What a thrill it was! X'Vit11 great expectations we looked toward graduation and many of us counted the days when we'd be on our own. ln the meantime we all kept busy with various activities. Our Senior Play called The Night of .january 16 which was a court trial, kept us all thinking if the .jury was right in its verdict. And how could we forget our trip to Olympia! On February 19, 1953, three busses unloaded on the Capitol grounds and we headed lor the Legislature in action. NVe saw the House ol' Representatives and also the State Senate. XVe then went through the capitol and clear to the top ol' the dome. The winding stairs were thrilling and lots of lun. lt was from this trip that we were inspired to present our school with the llag of the State ol XVashington. May 1 ended the lormal dances, as we Seniors presented South Pacific. It was beautilully deco- rated with tropical scenes. XVeyerhaeuser Timber Co. invited us to spend a day in the logging camp. On May 7 we donned our jeans and jackets and learned some ways of the woods. School seemed to fade away as in no time at all our annual Senior Picnic appeared. Everyone had his own way on May 21, to Ollut Lake. A recrea- tion program was enjoyed by all. The Baccalaureate was upon us. 1Ve walked slowly down the aisle on Sunday night, May 24. 19555. Our last big experience happened on the night of May 28, 1953. Commencement ended as 130 Sen- iors received their diplomas. This was a sad happy ending to the Class ol' 1355. One this year was the junior Class play. The title of the play was Our Hearts Were Young and Gay. The two leading roles were portrayed hy two girls. Cornelia Skinner 1-Iudy Burdickl, high society girl, and Emily Kimbrough lDonna Evansl, a girl who is always happy go lucky. The story takes place about the year of 1923 on an ocean liner. It is a story of two girls away from home on their way to Paris. The play was a very big success. Page 45 The cast of the play as they appeared was: Steward, Arvicl l.evineg lVlrs. Karen Andre fAnnette Rossj is being tried for the murder of Mr. Faulkner by the District Attorney lLarry Laycoclcj, who brings out many clues to the crime. Defense Attorney lMarvin Murrayj however, pleads her innozence and shows the jury where it is sui- cide on the part of Nancy Lee Faullcnerls lCarol Day'sl husband. The jury, chosen from the audience, decided her fate after hearing the facts of the case. The cast had an ending for either guilty or not guilty as the climax depended upon the jury. The verdict, not guilty, was very displeasing to Nancy as she thought Karen Andre should be sentenced or imprisoned for her husband,s death. Magno Svenson Uane Grahamj, added humor to the drama as she played the part of the dignified Scandinavian woman. Mrs. john Hutchins fDonna Almyj played the part of a Ne- gro woman who just happened to see the crime after it was com- mitted and also a stranger leaves the building. Page 46 As an early arriving student was walking by the C.H.S. annex, he was startled to hear a loud explosion and see windows break out and fall to the ground. The lire started at 8:09 in the Home lic. sewing room. It spread to the agriculture room, a portion ol' the at- tic and a part ol' the manual training shop. Assistant fire-chiel' Frank Bras said at the moment he estimated the damage at 1i5l5,00ll, adding it may go higher. Mr. Bras explained the blaze was caused by spontaneous combustion in a sewing room cupboard. The fire was extinguished in the hrst lloor rooms by 8:45 but by then the Fire had spread to the attic' above the sewing room. Offices in tl1e upper rooms were intact, only watery and smoky. The art room, band room, and outer shop rooms were spared, but it will take a long time to restore the damaged rooms to make them suitable lor class rooms. At printing time the school board had IIOI made its decision as to what would be done in the building. Page 47 Faye Palmer. Wlvo,s Sweater? Arm Nyrnan. A Wild party I like it. What a baby. Goo goo. Kittens Supply Reserve Strength l The Kittens not only had an excellent team in itself, but provided much needed reserves for the varsity. X'Vorking from the 'I' lormation their backfield had almost everything you could ask lor. In the speed department they had Robert Bennett, Bob Loomis, and John Glanville. These boys were al- ways good lor long gains on the ground. In the air department they had the strong and very accurate arm ol Jim Pessimier. In fact he con- nected lor over 20 passes in one game and found himsell' on the varsity roster for the rest of the sea- son. In the line Ron Dickinson did an excellent job ol catching those Pessemier passes. E, Hammond and Howard Holsebrook did a Fine job ol opening those much needed holes in the lines. ln the delense department Chuck Langlois was a pillar of strength. It was rumored that he made one of the most viscous tackles made all year. In view ol' all this it seems to most ol' us that Centralia should have a very good ball team next year if the boys keep up at the pace they had this year. The new coach is looking forward to a lot from these Sophomores next year. There are a large number that are expected to lill some varsity holes. Page 60 'mm WW - -.W.m,.,,.... Quarterback, Ioe Hayes, ran around his right end and raced for 36 yards. The last touchdown came in the final period. Aberdeen was in punt formation in their end fone. A had pass from Center got away from the kicker and went out of the end lone for an automatic safety. The powerful Centralia defense kept the Bob- cats within their own 25 yard line all of the third quarter. ln the last play of the game the Bobcats tried a last chance pass, only to have it intercepted by Gary Brines, who almost broke away for a touch- down. .-Xt the sound of the gun, Tiger rooters swarmed the players and coaches, Coach Morris was hoisted up on shoulders and carried ofl' the field. Centralia lost to the Vancouver Trappers in Vancouver October 2-f. The Tigers played a hard fought game. but came up with the smaller score 20 to 20. Centralia's second T.D. cattle when Fry threw a pitch out to Hayes who threw a pass to llrines. The first match of the year was with Chehalis, who had the fortune to beat our team by a small margin. This match was followed closely by a four team match with Olympia, who took first, Chehalis, sec'- ond and Longview, fourth. NVQ- got our set'- ond wind during the third match and tied Chehalis, then moved swiftly to take first in a three team meet with Raymond and Kelso Coming in in that order. Our two teams averaged a 92, the first string a lone 91 and the second string an aver- age of 92. .lim Butkus led the first string with an SI average, followed closely by his teammates, Steve I.ee averaged 83, followed by Dave Ilaw- kins 90, Frank Tobinski, 93, -Iohn Edinger 93, Larry l,eDue 88, and Jerry Swanson 98.
