The goal seemed to be unat- tainable, but through hard work, dedication and faith the impossible dream became a reality. On March 30,1985, the Junior Class hosted the Junior-Senior Banquet at Deer Park Restaurant on the Biltmore Estate. Many students began their day with a tour through the Biltmore. At approximately 7:30 p.m., the banquet began. The theme “Royal Renaissance seemed to fit perfectly with the atmosphere around Biltmore. After a delicious meal, the 147 participants moved to an outsid§ patio for the entertain- ment. The film Renaissance Then and Now was shown. The film was a collection of scenes from three years of C.W.C. life. Dean of Students, Don Wood, then pro- ceeded to roast the Senior Class. Finally, Dr. James Bross closed the evening with a pray- er of thanksgiving. To the Junior Class it proved that with determination and Faith in Christ all impossible dreams can become reality. 8 Jr. Sr. Banquet GRADUATION 1985 Graduation is a major goal for all college students. On May 5, 1985, many students reached their dream of graduating from Central Wesleyan College. The comple- tion of the required subjects was a demanding task, but through God's grace and much effort, dreams became reality. SPIRITUAL EMPHASIS FALL 1985 The week of September 8-12, 1985 was a really important week for each student and faculty member. The Rev. Jimmy Johnson spoke each day bringing mes- sages that were encouraging to all. The week helped give each person a new de- sire to work, learn, and live together. Our speaker informs each student of Christian val- ues. Rev, Jimmy Johnson enjoys his stay on campus as he motivates our spiritual lives. 14 Spiritual Emphasis Fall Work Day Fall workday was a big success. The day was set aside for students, faculty and staff to come together and work to make the Central Wesleyan campus more at- tractive. Students and faculty work hard together to make the campus mote appealing Friends enjoy a combination of work and fun. Dt Dongcll seems to be saying, 'Is there supposed to be water in this cement? The day began with a volleyball game against Tennessee Temple in which the Lady Warriors won 3 out of 5 matches. A bar- beque lunch was catered for all the visi- tors, alumni, and students. The annual soccer game was the next event. The dif- ference this year was the varsity soccer team played the ole-timers. This team consisted of alumni soccer players who came back to try their athletic ability once more. The ole-timers” came out with an unexpected victory (3-1). Half-time of the soccer game was per- haps the major event. At this point, Dan- ny Holland, Master of Ceremonies, an- nounced that Debbie Holcombe was the new Miss C.W.C. Debbie is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Holcombe of Eas- ley, S.C. Debbie is majoring in Business Administration and Physical Education. The title of first runner-up went to Christine Walker, second runner-up to Rhonda Thompson, and third runner-up Dorita Wheeler. The evening traditionally starts with the girls going trick-or- treating in Childs Hall. Then the boys go trick-or-treating in Stuart- Bennett Hall. A party with games follows. The games allow everyone to relax from the tiring first half of the semester. The best part of Hal- loween is the fellowship everyone enjoys with friends. The events are excellent opportunities for students and faculty to grow closer. The spint of unity is established as these students cheer and have fellowship together '' ' r.i Happiness Is that really you. Curt Lee? It began with a re- ception in the library, followed by a Christ- mas dinner in the J.A. Wood Cafeteria. The theme of this banquet was Christmas Love- feast Dr Bross began with opening re- marks. Christmas carols were sung, and the Chamber Choir presented a couple of spe- cial Christmas songs. We broke bread to- gether to signify our union, fellowship, and love. 29 r Laughter is the most beautiful sound in the world. There is nothing more pleas- ing and exciting as making someone you care about laugh. Care and concern Sticking together through thick and thin You and me Always and forever We've all heard these phrases many times before. Life changes. We grow up and go our separate ways. There will be times when we look back on our years here at Central Wesleyan College remembering the good times and the bad, and pranks we played and those that backfired. Most of all, we'll remember each other. We are sur- rounded everyday by people who are waiting to make our lives richer and fuller. There is someone there to talk to, cry on, and laugh with. Everyone must agree that there is nothing quite like a friend. These friends are happy just to go to class to be together. And They Call It Friendship With the faith and love God's given Springing from the hope we know. We will pray the joy you'll live in Is the strength that now you show But we'll keep you close as always. It won t even seem you've gone 'Cause our hearts in big and small ways Will keep the love that keeps us strong. And friends are friends forever If the Lord s the Lord of them; And a friend will not say never'' 'Cause the welcome will not end. Though it's hard to let you go. In the Father's hands we know. That a lifetime's not too long to live as friends. Damn ind Cult «rm to be the Crockett and Tubbs of CWC Patience is a Urge part of friendship and 1 shown here in this never-ending line. One of these ways is through the various organizations that are active in campus life. Each organization has its own identity and purpose for existence, but they all share a common goal. This goal is to unite the students in a Christian atmo- sphere in order to integrate Faith, Living, and Learning among all members who are part of these organizations. 60 i ORGANIZATIONS Left lo tight. fitM tcm Amy Smith Susan Looper Jan Davis. The Chamber Choir is a select group of approxi- mately thirty singers who represent the college each year. This group has gained popularity throughout the Southeast because of its fine per- formances in the past years. Members of the choir practice between three and five hours each week to perform choral works from the fifteenth century to the present. Under the direction of Professor Jonathan Crutchfield, the choir pre- sented a spectacular Broadway revue for Home- coming in October, provided entertainment for the Christmas banquets and performed a major choral work, Vivaldi's Gloria, in December. On its annual spring tour in March, the choir repre- sented the college in choral performances in Washington D.C., Virginia, and North Carolina. 70 Organizations Professor Jonathan Crutchfield, Director. Impact A new sound was heard on campus this year and it wasn t only the sound of the new chimes. This was the new sound of Impact, the musical group that represents Central Wesleyan College throughout the Southeast singing at conferences, camps, churches, and the General Conference of The Wesleyan Church. Impact shares their testi- mony for the Lord and Central Wesleyan College through contemporary Christian music and their own personal testimonies The sound was a new sound, with several different types of musical instruments being represented. The use of these musical instruments presented a totally new con- cept for Impact in the way they presented their concerts. The talent of every member was highly displayed throjjgh their musical ability, and their dedication to the Lord was shown in their sing- ing. Feature TURfl Dll COmPUTERS Dr. Robert Nash, Director of Computer Services, and Dr. Martin LaBar discuss new computer software. Dr Jim Schmutz prepares for BASIC class Central Wesleyan College has undergone many changes during the past ten, years and computers are playing a major role. It was only ten years ago that CWC leased data lines from AT T to connect computer terminals to the Clemson University IBM computer This Time Sharing Operation (TSO) al- lowed CWC to teach courses in language program- ming. Now, all that has changed. Emphasis on com- puter literacy involves learning to utilize software packages such as word processing, spread sheets, and data bases. The old TSO terminals, card read- ers, and card punches have been discarded. In their place are new microcomputers. The college now has six NCR PCs, two IBM PCs, four TANDY 1000 PCs, and 12 Apple lie's available for academic use. Some of these micros are distrib- uted over campus to be used in Computer Assisted Learning (CAL) environments. The music depart- ment, learning assistance lab, and English depart- ments all have software for use in some of their courses. Also many of the math and science courses utilize micros. It is the goal of CWC to strengthen the academic program with the use of computers as the institution moves into the Information Age of society. The administrative functions of the college have been computerized with software from mini com- puter systems and Digidyne mini computer. The system is configured with 160 MB of secondary storage for data files. This is accomplished with two CDC 80 MB disk drives. The processing of student data starts with prospective students and Admis- sions. The data is transferred to the Registrar's Of- fice and Business Office for processing. Once a student graduates, data is maintained in the Alumni files. The system generates valuable reports and greatly aids the college in processing administrative data at a faster rate. With the new administrative mini computer to pro- cess administrative functions and the new micro computers in the academic computer laboratory CWC will be able to offer students the resources for advancement into the world of computers. i Feature 87 Carillons Many students were surprised when classes began in the fall A new sound was heard on the hour every hour from 8:00 a.m until 6:00 p.m. This new sound was the pleas- ing sound of the carillon from the roof of the library. The Schulmerich Carillon consists of a control cabinet with four dif- ferent modules, each performing a separate function and each set up to play automatically by means of a computer control system capable of storing up to 682 time settings within a seven-day week. The pro- grammer is equipped with a built- in rechargeable battery that pro- vides back-up power, in case of power failure. The carillon is set by President John Newby. The carillon was donated to the col- lege by Ken and Rachel Dickens and their daughter Mary Faith, all of whom are alumni of Central Wesleyan College. This carillon will serve not only the college but the entire college community as W011 Kathleen Tegen demonstrates the new carillon that is housed in the college library. 88 Feature This is a rooftop view of the carillon speakers on the Library . . Wesleyan Evangelistic Ministries WEM is a complementary ministry and training center affiliated with the Division of Religion WEM is a subsidiary of Central Wesleyan College. Rev. W.M. Phillippe, Jr., Director, and Dr Kenneth Foutz work together to provide training for students preparing for Chris- tian ministry. The purpose of WEM is evangel- ism. WEM was founded to meet the great need of our churches, pastors, students, and other people to have a program of soul winning and evan- gelism. Time has quickly passed throughout my stay at CWC. Although I trans- ferred and spent only two years here, I have devel- oped many friendships that will last forever. Working on the yearbook staff has been a real experience. I have learned, through the help of my faithful advisers. Dr Vinson and Mrs. Kling, how to deal with fellow students in producing a year- book. I hope we have accurately captured the times at CWC in hopes that in the years to come we will have a book to remember from. I also hope everyone will enjoy this yearbook, but I could never please everyone. I can only apologize for any errors or omissions. My love and appreciation is beyond words, but 1 would like to thank everyone for their cooperation when I needed it. And to my staff, all I can say is that I love each and every one of you. Without your dedication and hard work, this year's Centralian would not have come to be. And last, but not least, I would like to thank the Lord for guiding me throughout the year. The theme Faith, Living, and Learning as quoted from the college handbook is always very important in my Christian life. I hope even as we depart CWC God's love will always be alive as we continue to integrate Faith, Living, and Learning in our lives. With Christian love always. tfjlJscu tfjtAjelcb Reba Revels Editor-in-Ch ief 1986 Centralian —
