MISSIONS CONFERENCE OCTOBER 30-NOVEMBER 2, 1983 Senr ro Serve” wos rhe rheme for rhe Annual Missions Conference held Ocrober 30-November 2 wirh Rev and Mrs Don Kinde and Rev Tom Hines os guesr speakers Rev and Mrs Kinde served as missionaries in Sierra Leone, Vesr Africa and Rev Hines in Honduras The opening service held on Sunday morning in rhe Firsr Wesleyan Church was parrerned afrer a West African worship service The sancruary was lir only by rhe lighr rhar penerrared rhe glass windows, ond rhe men and women were seared separarely on each side of rhe church Pasror Fred Andrews, who also wos o missionary ro Sierra Leone, rraded his rhree piece suir for rhe Africon garb of blue rrousers and o mulrt-colored shirr wirh yellow braid embroidered on rhe sleeves In rhe worship service rhe Scriprure was read in Krio and rhe offering was an African march offering. Music wos provided by a rhyrhm band composed of CWC srudenrs. Their drumming, hand-clapping, rambourine playing and other pseudo African sounds formed a background for choruses led by rhe Kmdes The music was climaxed by Nekka Egbuniwe, o Nigerian srudenr, singing in her narive language Rev Kinde ser rhe rone for rhe week's services by giving reasons for having a missions conference ond whar he felr should be accomplished Monday mghr’s service presenred a srudenr panel moderored by Mrs Kinde Ron Johnson, Lynn Hudson, Tamara Flmchum and Mary Sasaki discussed quesrtons abour rheir cross culrurol experiences Mary is a Japanese srudenr from rhe Immanuel Church who hos spenr rime srudying in rhe Philippines The orher srudenrs were in Sourh Africa rhis pasr summer as on evangelism ream In orher services, speakers Don and Joan Kinde and Tom Hines gave rheir personal resnmomes ro presenr rhe conference rheme, “Senr ro Serve ” They showed how God leads people inro missions and guides Through difficulr rimes Tom Hines shored how he did nor feel called ro missions, yer become a missionary He described his experiences as a novice missionary, especially rhe difficulries he encounrered wirh rhe language Wednesday mghr rhe Wesr African Banquet complered a successful confer ence The rradirional African celebration menu feoruredjollof nee (a mixrure of rice, rwo kinds of mear and spices) served from a big, black por by Mrs Rurh Argo The orher foods included peanurs, sweer pororoes, pineapple, oranges, bananas, as well as a desserr of rusks and hor reo Joshua Paul, a srudenr from Hairi, led rhe group of African versions of rhe game of Simon Says Don Kinde complered rhe banquet wirh a ralk on rhe new problems missionaries musr face roday All rhe missions conference activities were a refreshing reminder rhar most of rhe world survives, wirhour plush sears, carpeting, microphones and pianos, elecrnciry, and volumes of hymnbooks A spirir of worship is possible in rhe most simple environment — Tamara Flmchum Srudenr Life 23
