THE CENTRALIAN WESLEYAN METHODIST COLLEGE Central, South Carolina 1959 DEDICATION Words are inadequate to express our appreciation for the many contributions you have made to the different as- pects of our campus life. Your faithfulness in sponsoring the Foreign Missions Fellowship and the Student Wives Organi- zation has been a constant encouragement to their progress and spirit. Your strength of character and consistent example of the Christian life have been an inspiration and a challenge to us all. Y'ou have given unreservedly of your time—even into the early morning horns—to unravel our problems and to counsel with us. Because you carried a burden of prayer for our individual interests, the load has often been lighter. Your wise instruction and understanding guidance have helped us build our lives according to His blueprint. To you, Mrs. Calhoon, our second mother, we gratefully and lovingly dedicate the 1959 edition of the Centralian. Grace was in all her steps, heaven in her eye, In every gesture dignity and love. (Milton) A L M A M A T E R 1. Oh, Wesleyan College, we love thee. Thy name we sincerely adore. Praise, honor and laud do we give thee, To thee we will sing evermore. On the breast of the wide, surging ocean, In the forest, on mountain and plain, S. Men shall know of our hearts’s true devotion And list to our song of thy fame. And list to our song of thy fame. 2. Oh, Wesleyan College, we love thee, Thy halls and thy campus are dear, May no harm ever come to molest thee. And God always bless thee with cheer. Thou fountain of wisdom and learning, We will drink of thy clear, crystal flood; S. Then out to the great world returning, We will fight for the true and tire good. We will fight for the true and the good. 3. Oh! Wesleyan College, well love thee, When out from thy hall we have gone, Still bright may the skies be above thee, While we up life’s pathway press on, When others our places have taken. And strangers have entered thy door, S. In our mem’ry thou’It ne’er be forsaken And thy praises well sing evermore. And thy praises well sing evermore. r RHETT CLIFTON MULL1NAX A.B., M.A., D.D. President. Professor of English. “UPON THIS . . . . I WILL BUILD” Every wise builder knows the value of a solid foundation. The foolish one finds it out when the flood comes. Of infinitely greater importance than material construction is the building of a life. After a few decades, or at the most a century or two, the vast majority of earthly buildings crumble and decay. Human life, however, has an earthly beginning but stretches across the vast abyss to an endless eternity. It is therefore of tremendous importance that life be built upon a sure foundation. The life that is built upon the teachings of God’s Word wall stand the test both of time and eternity. A Bible-centered philosophy and education is a char- acteristic of a sound Christian school. Central College, therefore, endeavors to build upon the Word. R. C. MULLINAX, President Page Fourteen LEONARD C. BRANK B.S. in Ed. For two years she was business manager of the Centralian. In her junior year she was president of the Girls’ Dorm Council, and this year she has served faith- fully as president of the Foreign Missions Fellow- ship. Regardless of her participation in many activities, she has earned high grades. Her kind words and sweet Christian spirit have been an example to each of us. We sincerely wish her God’s bountiful and manifold blessings. James Bross The students of our college have shown their confidence in Jim Bross’s leadership ability by electing him to serve as student body president this year. His pleasing personality and fine Chris- tian example have won the respect of those who know him. He served as president of the choir and is a member of the college quartet. Jim has maintained a high scholastic record. Whether he serves as pastor, doctor, or teacher, we believe he will continue to be an inspiration and blessing to those whom he contacts. Her outstanding musical talent has been manifested in recitals, in the College Trio, and the College Choir. We admire her sweet Christian spirit and example, which has been consistently manifested in her life. Certainly Hat- tie is worthy of a place in Who’s Who in the Gloria Bell Junior College. At twelve years of age she was saved. On finishing high school in 1941, she felt the Lord leading ner to enter nurses' training in Columbia. South Caro- lina. In 1944 she received her R.N. degree. In a revival at the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Columbia, she surrendered her life completely to the Lord. Soon He spoke of the mission field; and in a missionary conference at Lake Louise, Georgia. C k1 directed her interest to the Island world. Virginia attended college at Central and was a blessing to the student body while she was here. She was instrumental in organizing the Foreign Missions Fellowship on our campus. Continuing her studies at Houghton College, she received her A.B, degree in June, 1955. Early in 1956 she left for Haiti, where she is now serving the Lord and winning souls for Him, as well as ministering to sick bodies. We students of Wesleyan Methodist College feel very much honored to have the privilege of supporting these missionaries UV feel that we have a small part in helping them as they win souls and build for eternity in a land far distant from us. REV. ARTHUR J. CALHOON At Galena, Ohio, on May 12, 1906, the Rever- end Arthur J. Calhoon was bom to the Reverend and Mrs. George Calhoon. He was saved at the age of seven and was sanctified several years later. In 1925 Mr. Calhoon enrolled at Marion College and was graduated with the class of 1930. During his last year of college at Marion he re- ceived a call to Japan Later the door opened for service in India, and he did his first mission- ary work in Japan while en route to India. His work in India under the llephzibah Faith Mis- sionary Association extended from the years 1936 to 1942. The three years following his return from India were spent in service as a pastor and evan- gelist of the Wesleyan Methodist Church. In 1945 he was asked to go to Haiti by the board he served under in India. Because wmrkers were urgently needed, he was «asked to remain on the field, During his first term the work was given to the Wesleyan Missionary' Board. Now in their third term as missionaries to Haiti, the Reverend Mr and Mrs. Calhoon are rejoicing in their min- istry for Christ on this island.
