1951 Centralian Staff of 1951 “Preparation in Administration of Mind for Soul for Physical for Social USE THE DAY — Keep forever in view the momentous value of life; aim at its worthiest use — its sublimest end; spurn, with disdain, those foolish trifles and frivolous vcmifies, whic i so often con- sume life, as the locusts did Egypt; and devote yourself, with the ardor of a passion, to attain the most divine improvements of the human soul. In short, hold yourself in preparation to make the transition fo another life, whenever you shall be claimed by the Lord of the world ' —J. Foster t t is with joy that we honor those who have helped direct the progress of Central College to its present attain- ments. Often there ore those who move quietly behind the scenes and prepare the way for those who play great roles on the stage of life. The 1951 Centralion Staff wishes to honor two such friends of our Alma Mater, Mrs. John Front Childs, who spent twelve years working beside her husband, who was president from 1928 to 1940, and her daughter, Ina Louise, who is an alumna of this institution. These have not only given of their friendship, service, and money but have given a husband and father to the cause of Christian education. They are now engaged in activities off the campus, but we still feel their influence, prayers, and pro- found interest in our success. It is with heart-felt esteem and profound gratitude that this volume of the Centra ian is respectfully dedicated. reparation auii ministration TRIBUTE WHO IS EDUCATED? There are five tests of the evidence of education correctness and precision in the use of the mother tongue; refined and gentle manners, the result of fixed habits of thought and action; sound standards of appreciation of beauty and of worth, and a character based on those standards; power and habit of reflection; efficiency or the power to do. Wilcox, our pastor, came to the campus this year for the first time. We have learned to appreciate his deep interest, warm smile, and friendly greetings, as well as untiring efforts to prepare our hearts for the universal call of the Master. His spirit-filled life and heart-searching messages have proved many times to be a source of inspiration to the students as well as to those in the community. The interesting discussions and inspiring messages given in the daily chapel services prove to be refreshing pauses from the routine of class work and true sources of inspiration toward developing well-rounded lives. w. y. CL iriitmas 2b inner Because of their outstanding scholarship, per- sonality, participation in extra:urricular activities, and character, these students merited the honor bestowed on them when they were chosen by the faculty to represent their department in Who's Who in Central College.' EUGENE SMITH In the five years that he has been here. Gene has proved himself a leader on the athletic field, in ihe classroom, the K, L. S., and the religious activities. His faithful work as business manager of the Cenlralian has contributed much to the success of this book. With Christ as Guide, he will be a success. JESSE VUNCANNON Some people scintillate brilliantly for a time, and then their light goes out, whereas others burn with a steady flame that is not extinguished. Jesse belongs to the latter group. Quiet but dependable, he has held many positions—bass singer in the quartette and the choir, manager of the Cupboard, leader in the P. L. S., and editor of the Cenfra ian. In the classroom he has excelled Faithfulness and capability are qual- ities which will enable him to make good in any piofession. HELEN TRUEBLOOD Miss Trueblood's consistent Christian life has been a blessing to all. MARION COLLEGE At the crossroads of the church where North, South, East, and West meet with a common purpose. Senior college work in Liberal Arls, Fine Arts, Teacher Training and Pre-professional courses. New college theological curricula leading to a five-year Th.B. A cafa ogue on request William F. McConn President Marion, Indiana Jrouali ton d oil eg. Houghton, New York Liberal Arts, Wesleyan, High Standards of Conduct WHAT NEXT . . . You hove completed the two most difficult years of college work. In view of the present stress upon higher education and the military demands of our country, you should consider further study toward a degree a matter of necessity. WHERE NEXT . . . The college of your choice should be outstanding in its reputation for accreditation, atmosphere, and aim. Accreditation guarantees full recognition of your degrees by medical schools, seminaries, and other graduate schools. Atmosphere assures you of a high grade of efficiency and a wealth of undefinable spiritual, moral, and culturol values. A noble aim is the gateway to added incentive and scholarly application. Houghton College is the embodiment of all of these. WHY NEXT . . . You cannot do better than to make Houghton your choice. Houghton is a fully accredited college, giving major and minor credit in twenty-six different fields and granting bachelor degrees in liberal arts, science, and music. In an atmosphere that is unashamedly Christian, its faculty and staff are devoted to the one aim of pre- paring Christian students for Christian service in all of the professions.
