BLANTON Theological LILA MIRIAM KENDRICK Sophomore The College AIMS AND PURPOSES Vfhen the pioneers of the Wesleyan Methodist Connection, young people, these are some of the desires and aims that led them to such led by the Holy Spirit, conceived the idea of a school for its action. They wanted an institution that would promote a godly influence upon the young students. Wishing also to protect young people against the ungodly attraction of the day, and to educate for the ministry and Holiness, they approved of only the highest pos- sible type of teachers, high in Christian character and experience as well as scholastic ability., To maintain high standards and prin- ciples, of course rules had to be made. It is by adhering to these rules and obeying them that we catch a glimpse of the pattern the pioneers set for us, and this glimpse gives us hope to push on and to hold fast to the heritage and to the Faith of Cui' Fatherslw K 7 ,l if 35 W... ...Fa 5 1 ste. :ef ui I U, V r ofa lf My A i --P ,M E ,,,e.-msg., 1- '---- -- ' 1 JJ' 1 1 Theological Inniors ANNETTE AGREE Union Point, Ca. Tired out students just barely dropping off to sleep after strenu- ous studies are awakened by bedlam. ls it fire? No, just Miss French, the dean, ringing the six-thirty bell. l-lo hum. The girls stop running up and down the halls, the stairs cease to creak and rattle. Quiet. Then somebody runs in our room, snaps on the light, and mumbling something about breakfast, history, blue skirt, and ten minutes ,til seven gives us the vague impression that it's time to get up to go to breakfast. Sitting on the bed, rubbing our eyes, yawning, and fumbling under the bed for our shoes, we hear a jangling echo on the still morning air. lt is the five to seven bell breaking the stillness of before dawnf, and reminding us that itis breakfast time. VVe tie a kerchief on our head, grab some- thing out of the closet, and run. The day has begun, and with bleary eyes we glare at our corn Hakes on the table before us. N ever again, we say. Why do l come to breakfast anyway? But we are always back for more the next morning. . By the time the third cup of coffee is downed, we are fairly alive to what goes on about us. Slowly we rise and stumble back to the dorm to clean the room, make the bed, and, maybe, cram for a lesson or two. Time for class, eight-forty-five. Asking here and there of students met on the stairs, we find out what the lesson for today is about. Sitting on pins and needles for fear the teacher will ask us a question, we nearly faint with relief when the bell rings. After hasty gossip in the hall we skid into second period class at the sound of the last bell. Managing to live through the second period, we now take time out for chapel. On the way we meet Miss French in the hall giving out the mail. lVlail is what each and every student looks forward to, counts time by. ln chapel we lift our voices and our spirits in songs of praise. The beautiful, resonant voice of Miss I-licks, assistant dean now in charge at Smith Hall, soars out above all the rest. President Childs leads in the chapel service and afterwards gives us a little pep talk. We left-right it from the auditorium in step to one of Mrs. Childs's rousing marches. Enduring third period with lndian stoicism, we listen for the 12:00 M. bell. The bell always creates a conditional responsef, We arrive at the kitchen door with quivering noses and watering mouths. After paying due tribute to Mrs. McDaniel's cooking, we have a breathing spell until one-twenty. Then the afternoon classes begin. With heavy heads and weary brains we attempt in vain to follow the spry and verbose professor. With a sigh of resignation to our fate, we fall into a lethargy, when with a joyful, triumphant clang, the four o'clock bell rings. Like bats out of their daytime cave, some students streak off to town, some race pell-mell to the basket-ball court, others turn steadily and soberly to their books, and some abandon this sphere for the more inviting one of the pasture. . For a while quiet prevails on the campus. The five oiclock bell rings, warning students it is but half an hour until supper. Here come stu- dents from all corners of the campus. After supper the students engage in various activities until study hour, seven o'clock. Comparative quiet reigns until 9:30. After a brief period of breaking loose, we finally settle down and have the lights out by ten- sixteen at least. r K ...- l l 4 Y i 1 S ii 1 ll Qi 5. ll lf, if I i l l ,. rp' I ta 1 V 1, t A ,E gl , gf, ri' 1 F' it ,V ri fl. if if Q, lr E -Lg i, 1,-i ll A u J l Y! Ytlp. .AI-1 ...'...- V 1 s- CLIFTON WOOD O - junior The Academy History ond Cbjective When this school was newly established by the Wesleyan Methodist Connection, it was made up of primaryjgrammar, high school, and four grades in college. To meet the need for education in Christian morals and principles as well as for education of intellectuals, the founders organized a school to appeal to all the age groups of youth. The administration building was the white frame building now known as Smith Hall, named for C. B. Smith, a Wesleyan layman who felt deeply the need of a school to train young people in the way they should go. Of course, every grade from the first grade in primary to the fourth year in college was housed in this building. There was no such thing as a chemistry laboratory where research activities could be carried on. A certain grade met in a certain roomg there was no changing of classes. Teachers were few and Often had to be able to teach a variety of subjects. There were music and mathematics departments, for instance, but it was not uncommon for one teacher to covermore than one department. The chapel was located in the left wing of the administration building and was used not only as chapel but also for study hall and sometimes for a classroom. Quarters were small, and space had to be utilized in every way possible. Perhaps the most outstanding event of the year was Commencement. This covered the larger part of a week, because each organization had its final program on a specific night. The meeting of the L1brary'Association, a society in which each member paid dues of one dollar a year for the purpose of increasing the number of books for the libraryg public meetings of the literary societies, the music recital, the Y. M. VV. B. service conducted by some returned mission- ary, a Spirit-led praise and testimony meetingg and the sermon were all features of Commence- ment week. Qne year these exercises were held on a wooden platform constructed in front of the administration building for the explicit purpose. There was no specific age level. Students who yielded to the call of the Spirit to become leaders and workers for l-lim, who in the course of study needed high school credit took, regard- less of age, academy work. lf the patriarchs of the institution could look down through the years to this present day, would they be pleased with the way in which the principles and standards have been maintained? The society has gone far in accomplishing some of its purposes and desires. It has practiced the secret of suc- cess, namely, that of being ready for opportunity when it comes. Again it has given the sister society close and keen competition, and has shown the true Philomathean spirit in either victory or defeat. To develop young people socially, mentally, and spiritually, to raise standards and ideals of the young people of Central College, to discover and develop new talent, to promote loyalty, wholesome fellowship, and a more vital and unselfish school spirit are some purposes of this society. The Philomathean Literary Society has had many victories this year and is indeed worthy of praise. It has been neither one indi- vidual nor one group of individuals who has made this society truly great, but it has been the earnest and sincere cooperation of each of her members. Kindness has often proved to be of more avail than force. lt is this kindness in inviting new students to become members of this society that has increased its membership. Dnce a Keewanian, always a Keewanian-that's loyalty. Each member pushes his society, and in every contest he acts, not for himself, 'but for the glory of the blue and white. ln every project put forth by the society, sincerity is stressed. The Keewanis Literary Society has held its own in the fields of sports, declamation and recitation contests, and Centralian sales contests. Every year brings more laurels to add to the triumphs of the Keewanis Literary Society. High aims in educational, spiritual, and intellectual spheres lead this society forward to even greater achievements. Central College is striving to develop all the phases of life. Of these, soul development is supreme, and the development of the mind is important, but the body must not be neglected. Just as the soul reaches out for God and the mind thirsts for knowledge, the body, with which We are directly dealing, desires pleasant activity. This desire of the body is as legitimate as its appetite for food, and it cannot be satisfied with the activity received through Work alone. Therefore our athletic program, al- though not very far advanced, affords considerable exercise and much legitimate pleasure for the girls, including a physical education class in the first term, and, more formally, embraces the activities of the lVlen's Athletic Association. Properly supervised competition is realized on the playgrounds in the form of tennis, volleyfball, soft- ball, basket ball, and football games. The inter-society games, with the most representative players on the field, provide the greatest en- thusiasm and lceenest competition. Pictures and results of these contests appear on the following pages. ...W . . l-lilcin.
