President ' s Message Central has emerged from the small college daw into the realm of larger in¬ stitutions. It is now one of the half dozen leading colleges in the State of Wash¬ ington and is in a good position to render a greater service to the coming generations. Last year, college degrees were conferred upon JM people. The reclamation and irrigation projects in Central Washington and the lower Yakima Valley areas arc attracting people in larger numbers. These and the atomic energy plant at Hanford bid fair to increase the population to such a high degree that our institution will be called upon increasingly for more services. A steady growth in college en¬ rollments snail be experienced for years to come. The greatest change in Central s campus this year has been in the construction of three new buildings. The Board of Trustees authorized the borrowing of $700,- 000 so that we could erect these buildings. The funds were secured by the floating of an issue of 20-year bonds. During the next twenty years students will contribute to a building funa to retire these bonds. In the meantime we will have the pleasure of occupying a student union building, a commons building and a men s dormitory that will accomodate 100 students. The Union especially will be enjoyed because it will tend to centralize student offices and activities It has been needed for a long time. Into it will go the student post office, the bookstore, the Campus Crier, the Hyakcm, the student council office, the snack bar, the faculty dub, a large lounge and two small game rooms Heretofore these facilities have been scattered among several of the campus buildings. This building will truly be a student center. Even though the national mobilization of man power for the purpose of build¬ ing a strong defense against communistic world wide aggression has had a tem¬ porary restraining influence, we face the future with optimism. I am hapoy to report that the atmosphere on the campus has been relatively calm and cheerful. I extend to the seniors our very best wishes as they depart to take up new endeavors. We are grateful to the Editor of the Hyakcm and her staff for their careful work in compiling and publishing this yearbook. We shall keep it as a valuable record of a busy college year. Robert E.
