THE PRESIDENT ' S MESSAGE The editor of the Hyakem and her staff deserve especial commendation for their work done in the designing and editing of this yearbook under the disadvantage of a greatly curtailed budget caused by a lower enrollment of students. Die year 19-Id 19-0 shall go down in history x another calamitous war year during which we have had to curtail many of our u-iual activities- We have gladly adjusted to the situation, however, in the hopes that we may play our part in the winning of the war. In this same spirit of patriotism. the H yak cm has been dedicated to former students who are serving in the Armed Forces. It is gratifying to note the determined spin! of the students in spite of handicaps caused by (Ik- war. Die basic and fundamental collegiate program has been carried on. and everyone has been constructively busy We are plexted to have this record of the life of the college during 1944 4S. We shall all appreciate this yearbook and ax years pass we shall he glad that we have had a record of the personnel and llnr events of the year. We arc proud of the fact that so many of our former students have played their part in our fight for freedom On the other hand, it saddens our hearts w-Ik-d we enumerate the fine, promising people who have made the supreme sainfice. We arc all very hopeful that this may be the last year of tl»c war so that we may turn all of our attention toward the development of manhood, character, and scholarship which is our foremost objective. May we all look to the future with confidence. 5 Rum nr F MoGoNNCLL President
