V . ,H ,V A j , A 1 V Fortunately, there is a great variety in college life. In that variety is found the experiences essential to giving a rich back- ground for the future leaders who are in the making. The Hyakem, which is created by students, presents a good sampling of the great many college activities which occur in a year. Through word and picture, it leaves a record of the personalities in the faculty and the student body. lt leaves with us pictures of the buildings, organizations, and scenes with which we have had intimate contact. It is a history which we shall prize in years to come. l am glad that l have been privileged to have a part in it. ROBERT E. MCCONNELL, President. This year the pictures of the administrative officers of the College show us all at work. Heretofore we have faced the cam- era with a Hsmile, please, as if we had nothing to do. Here is evidence that we can still smile though we are at work. All are inclined to rebel when work presses, but work is our salvation as well as yours. Most of the things we must do are done to make your work more profitable and to help you solve your personal problems. In that thought there is pleasure. H. WHITNEY. Registrar. At the present time our dream is developing into reality. Our new College Elementary School has been planned to meet the needs of teacher education by attempting to provide, first of all for the children an ideal living environment while at school, and secondly to give to college students rich opportunities for studying children and modern educational procedures. The aim of the health and physical education department is to build sound bodies and graduate a group of students trained to carry on a health and activity program in the public schools. Leo Nicholson and George Mabee are given the double task of coaching the major sports, carrying on a very diversified intra- mural program and teaching courses in health education. Dorothy Dean, head of the women's department in physical and health education, is given the task of teaching upper division classes in health and assigning to each and every freshman and sophomore an activity program to last for six quarters. The dancing and sports program for women is conducted under Jesse Puckett and Rosarnond Wentworth. A variety of courses is offered to all students on the campus. Leslie Hull has the double role of nurse and instructor in health education. She is ably assisted by Alice Flowers. Together they are responsible for the health of the entire campus, work with the problems in health of the training school children and conduct a very efficient infirmary. Through the efforts of these people, a complete health serv- ice and courses in health, hygiene, and activity are provided. CIVICIZI 1 CHS I-ld N Jesse L. Puckett Rosamond Wentworth Classification on page 25. Classification on page 25. The department of Health and Physical Education has shown remarkable growth in the past years. Every seasori finds new activity courses offered the girls to help prepare them for active participation in playground work. Who on this campus has failed to take at least one sniff into the Health Ed. 50 course to see if the cats were still there? All students remember the courses offered by Mr. Nicholson with their side-lights in the problems of the curent football and basketball season. Every girl can find her favorite sport among the many listed in the cata- log: baseball, basketball, volley ball, tennis, badminton, hockey, soccer, field ball, archery, and tumbling. Usually a new experience for the girls are the courses in creative dance, folk dancing, clogging, and social dancing. The Folk Festival and the Dance Drama were the colorful exhibitions given by students in this section of physical education. Well-known figures on the campus are the members of the department- Miss Dean, Miss Puckett, and Miss Wentworth. ' 3:- ,M -1 ,L . ..- x W' ' -F-.. -- 1 1 i -.Iv-... f ,..: '...'b.. Play- ing his third year of first team ball, Don proved to be the steadying influence and the hardest-driving member of the squad. When the chips were down, Sanders would come through. His floor work, together with his accurate pass- ing and shooting, greatly helped in winning many ball games. He will be back next year to spark the squad. SCDDES Date C. W. C. E. Al- though he was No. 4 man, it can be said without doubt that Tom's game was at its best since he entered college. His serves are swift, and his best shot is a smashing, overhand drive while close to the net. Clint and Clyde Knox were respon- sible for the revived interest in tennis shown in this college this year. Both netsters are believers in fast play. They have sizzling serves and fast backhand and forehand drives. Clint plays in the No. 2 slot, while Clyde is No. 2 man. Both are freshmen this year. At the top is Clyde. Ray Whitfield, another frosh who played as the third man, won several matches during the season. Relying on a good forehand shot, he stayed in there swinging. His serve is deadly. Frank Crimp, another of the set of promising freshmen, played several opponents of high caliber. Crimp has an uncanny ability for placing fast shots along the sidelines. l-le also has a pow- erful overhand drive while playing at net. Much will be heard from him in the future tennis seasons. The A Cappella Choir, under the capable direction of Wayne S. Hertz, has shown marked progress. It presented two concerts, the Nativity,'l assisted with the Elijah and the baccalaureate services. The choir has enjoyed several trips to various points throughout the state. It pr-esented programs assisted by Mr. Milton Steinhart, violin, and Miss Juanita Davies, piano, in Selah, Yakima, Wapato, Sunnyside, Grandview, Toppenish, Ellensburg, Cashmere, and Wenat- chee high schools. It participated in the North-Western Music Education Conference in Tacoma and made a Radio Broadcast from K.V.I. The manner in which they were received on these occasions proves the choir's out- standing ability. The orchestra directed by Milton Steinhart presented two concerts. Other activities included music for the Nativity, for school plays, for the Elijah and for commence- ment. Their brilliant performances were received with great enthusiasm by all listeners. The band under the direction of Cloice Myers has entered into numerous campus ac- tivities which include playing for football and basketball games. They presented a color- ful spectacle in their marching formations with their new uniforms. During the year they presented two concerts in the college auditorium. For the first time C .W. C. E. was rep- resented at the Wenatchee Apple Blossom Festival with the band escorting the Ellensbtug Princess in the parade. The music Department organized and staged the Central Washington Music Festival with twenty-eight high schools represented and an approximate attendance of 900 students. 53 I i i I I i ii i i NX - Dr. E. Freshmen were immediately initiated into dormitory life when they conducted a lively fire drill for the amusement of the upper classmen. We were proud when we again won the annual Homecoming sign contest. Suppressed Desires was the theme of the hall's special party. It was surprising to learn that conditions have so curbed our desires: no one came dressed as a school teacher. Especially to be remembered were the fireside given during Tolo Week and the Spring Formal. Then there was the annual Easter morning egg-hunt which must be included. The patter of slippers down the hall in response to buzzers, the sound of voices through open doors, the clicking of typewriters, the odor of pop-corn, after-dinner dancing, radios blaring-all remind us that Sue's girls are living. This triumph was followed by a truly successful Christmas party which was enlivened by the exchange of presents and a program. During the winter quarter, our second annual Moonglow informal was held. With the East and West rooms transformed into moon magic, all the couples who attended this gala affair had a grand time. The hall also sponsored a theater party. After the movie, the girls returned to Kamola for dancing and re- freshments, completing this evening of fun. The pep and good-fellowship which has prevailed in Kamola for the past year can be traced definitely to her hard-working, capable corps of officers and to Mrs. Reynolds who, in one short year, has made this dormitory seem like home to the one hundred and fifty girls who work and play under Kamola's rambling tile roofs. An industrious group of men displayed a clever sign and a gruesome skit for Stunt Night dur- ing the finest Homecoming Week to date. Christmas was appropriately observed with a gift party under Mrs. Maynard's supervision. Further, our firesides were the most enjoy- able of informal functions on the campus. The climax of activities was the annual Faculty Breakfast April 30, which was presided over by the president. l Mrs. Maynard Mingled in with these important hap- penings were all the unforgettable bull sessions, scraping of chairs, and other incidents which caused the past quarters to become memorable. A Cabaret Dance was the new trend in social evenings. This dance and costume party was a huge success and proved to be very entertaining to the girls and their invited guests. Less original, but every bit as much fun, was the outdoor picnic held for the girls. Dur- ing the winter the annual banquet was held. Spring quarter produced the epic-making Prom sponsored by the Off-Campus Club. The torture of finding a new way to decorate the gym was all forgotten when the dance finally got under way-one o fthe biggest dances of the year.
