It HDLMES Stevenson says that To miss the joy is to miss everything, and Bacon that There is no man that imparteth his joys to his friend but he joyeth the more, and Nlontaigne that,- A mere bookish learning is a poor paltry learn- ing, and Chaucer, of the student, Gladly would he learn, and gladly teach. When, as actual teachers, your mere bookish learning may seem to you very scanty indeed, and when the old college friendships in which you might 'ijoy the more seem very far away, I hope that you can still philosophize on the des- cription of Chaucer's student, and find the joy in your new work.
